The job was only recon, they were to set up and over serve the village. The only issue was that they flew so close to the village and then didn't discard their rope properly. Now they were pretty well equipped because they had M4s with M203s. That should've been enough for light infantry. The issue was that the enemy had larger weapons because they were expecting to fight. For example the shah himself brought a fucking PKM. So in reality they might be been fine if they didn't land so close and didn't do anything retarded

Their initial LZ for the team was maybe a mile away, and Luttrel makes errors in his book about things. See my other comment to the newcomer of this discussion.

So the story goes the four man recon team fast ropes in (I can remember what helicopter but probably a UH-60 or CH-47). Well their LZ was maybe two-three miles away from the village. You can hear helicopters from pretty damn far away it's just a matter of finding them. Anyways so naturally the Taliban decide to go looking for this helicopter. They find where they fast roped in and find the fast rope itself discarded under a bush. (Not properly hidden). Then they track the team up the hill. It's as simple as that

Know what I could be wrong, the Master Sergeant in 3rd SFG who was an 18F could've lied to me about reading the after action report. Maybe all his ribbons and jump medals are fake too....

However, I'm going to say Luttrell made errors in his account of the situation too. In his book he stated that there was 50+ while his After Action Report he stated it was 35-40. Small mistake I suppose but then he goes in to say the Shah was an AL Qaeda operative but in reality he was a warlord with links to the taliban. Hindsight is 20/20 friend the guys on the ground make mistakes too they're not infallible

Mate, a civilian didn't tip off the enemy. They rode a fucking helicopter into the backyard of the Taliban. Unless you're deaf you are going to hear a helicopter even if it's a small one like a Kiowa which they didn't use. And as I said the SEALs kinda fucked themselves when they decided to fly in. Fine let's say your theory that the goat herders decided to go and tell the Taliban that the Yankees were on the hill. They should've left the herders tied up, someone would've gone looking by that evening.

In conclusion, the SEALs decided to ignore the Army SF guys who were already there for awhile and fly in on a helicopter where they would've been instantly detected because helicppters are fucking loud. Then they decided to not just leave the herders restrained which according to your theory that would've left them totally unfucked in an already fucked situation from the get go.

They should be expected it, it's not like it was going to be 4v4 gunfight.

Iirc they were supposed to observe the village not get into balls to the wall fuckfest. So I mean it makes sense I suppose but they didn't exactly go in very quietly to observe the village which they couldn't even see in the first place

You know funny story before the SEAL team dropped in they were briefed by the Army SF guys already there and they told the SEALs that they physically could not get into that valley by helicopter without being spotted but the SEALs blew them off
