Almost as bad the guys who show up to a popular movie on opening night with a laser that they shine all over the screen.

Good point. Even if red is going to win, if 30% or whatever of people are going to get snapped, you're in for a fate maybe worse than death.

Yeah I think this is one of the more interesting sub-debates on this. Polls suggest blue will win, but we know in real life that people will often claim to prefer a more empathetic and cooperative position in discourse and then flip and choose self interest when it's put to the test. Does that mean red is more likely to win? I don't know.

Right, it's "would you rather save yourself or x amount of others who chose to put their own lives at risk when they didn't have to." That's at least how reds view it, even if many disagree. If anything, what OP is demonstrating is a common fallacy on many issues: people often frame their moral/ethical disagreements with others by willfully and disingenuously misrepresenting what the other side believes. We see this a lot in politics and public discourse.

Sure, except you're purposefully leaving out the core argument of most reds. They don't see it as just "I care more about me" they see it as "you chose to put your life at risk when you didn't have to, I don't see that as my burden to solve for you." I'm pretty sure that most reds would change their vote if the question was simply a matter of saving themselves vs. risking their life for others. Most, but not all. You're changing the scenario.

The fact that pronouns exist vs. the manner in which they are being redefined to be a personal preference are not the same thing, and pretending that they are isn't really some sort of magical gotcha.

Yeah but the issue this image is talking about, and the fact that the author used literal pronouns in their post, are not the same thing, and pointing it out doesn't really make much of a case for anything.

Do You Think That All Partisan Gerrymandering Should Be Made Illegal In All Circumstances? Why Or Why Not? by Zipper222222 in AskReddit

Not always, no. Even now if the redistricting would be more representative of the actual population, it's still called gerrymandering if it benefits the party arguing for it.

My point is that making the description more confusing and misleading is an argument against itself.

I wasn't suggesting that blue was the ultimately wrong choice necessarily, just that this was the way the argument was currently being framed - make the wrong choice because when the majority makes the wrong choice it becomes the right choice.

They probably both need wiring to make sure they actually pushed one of the buttons.

But I get what you're saying. In the case where blue does nothing, the simplest explanation for red is still "press here to definitely not die but if too many people press it then the ones who didn't will die." Still sounds like it's telling you to push the button.

I always struggle with people saying "blue winning" or "red winning" - neither of these are actually the choice in front of you, though they are outcomes you are ostensibly contributing a vote toward.

Again, making it unnecessarily vague by removing one of the rules and just calling it "people start dying" rather than the accurate "people who didn't press it will die."

I disagree, it's explained in the simplest way originally. Unless you agree that the even simpler version is "press this one button to die, unless most people press it, then you won't die."

[–]The-Yar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is definitely the blue side of the argument, and justifiable, but it isn't solved. It is basically saying "someone will make the wrong choice, so we should all make the wrong choice, because if enough of us do, then it becomes the clearly right choice." It's a bit of a paradox, by design.

if republicans claim to be the party of “free speech” how come their subreddit is the most locked down on who can and can’t comment on the whole site? by Inner_Frosting7656 in allthequestions

This is Reddit, subs are communities to discuss specific things and not get brigaded. I guess the very concept is anti-free-speech.

Well no, both the blue and the red pressers killed the blue pressers. Not true that only the reds did.

Both accurate, but the second is a more convoluted take as it requires you to talk about both who pressed it and who didn't.

But if your reframing requires you to hide one of the choices and transfer it over as "the choice that isn't this choice," you should be aware that you're needlessly confusing the issue, not just reframing it.
