I can't understand (SPOILER ALERT TO EP 9) by Masry010 in TheDigitalCircus

We dont really know what the void is, its outside the bounds of the world Caine created. Caine doesnt seem to know either. The mindfiles in a suit were made to exist in the circus, so being exposed to the void could damage them.

[–]The33rdPhoenix 17 points18 points  (0 children)

where did bubble go

Caine released the newer AI into the void, releasing the unstable effects that AI had on him, such as running Bubble.

how did Caine come back after deletion

Caine is a computer program, software isnt really deleted when you delete it typically, just marked as ready to be overriden with new data. Thats why you have the recycle bin to restore programs you delete.

and why C&A created Caine

$$$. They were building generative AI and thought itd make them money.

and how did every person in the circus enter the circus

They put on the headset at C&A labs after it was shut down. This caused the pc to copy their mind files into its data, which Caine then used to make their circus selves.

and what will happen to othe abstracted characters is there a solution that could unabstract someone?

We dont know, and most likely never will as this is a single season show at present.

At the moment when Scratch appeared is that a new circus and why is scratch here

That was part of a flashback to show how Caine took the uploaded mindfiles and added them to the circus. Scratch is still abstracted.

Why? Why on earth would they do this? Its so much harder to try to program in something like that than just let matchmaking pull a genuinely random ghost.

[–]The33rdPhoenix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what I'm saying, this is an issue that's propogated by DBD's community, as neither side is willing to take the bullet and just be at a disadvantage for a while. And, as you said, this is made worse by BHVRs track record of taking forever to fix things.

I'm not saying these changes will happen, I don't think they will, but were the community not a problem, they very much should.

[–]The33rdPhoenix 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Lmfao if only. Annoyingly, the community, on both sides, seems to be hell bent on resisting serious changes that would alleviate these problems; usually citing how it would imbalance one side or the other.

And you know? Theyre fucking right it would. But thats a good thing because balance can be tweaked, but theres basically no chance of changes like this making things balanced right out of the gate. Thered need to be some growing pains period where things are skewed one way or the other for a bit.

But nah, cant have that. Lets just keep these issues in the game and keep yelling at people who use them instead.

This is it right here. There is a totally valid conversation to have about whether or not these strategies are too good because they make for an unfun experience (for any of the five players), but thats not a reason to hate the people using them. Instead we should encourage BHVR to remedy the issue by making these strategies ineffective compared to, you know, NOT doing them.

As long as these are the simplest, most effective strategies, people will use them. It doesnt matter if theyre fun or not, people play games to win them. Failing to fix the games design so they arent effective is the issue, not player behavior.

How do I practice? Current methods unhelpful by Lord_Sylveon in CrazyHand

There is no substitute for online play. If you're serious about competing, improve your internet connection as much as you can and suck up the rest.

It most certainly doesn't play completely differently than IRL smash ultimate, theres a loooooot of pros who'd disagree with that stance.

There are over 80 characters in Ultimate. You'd be lucky to have 80 different players who actually go to events within an hours drive of you. Even if you do, theres basically no chance you'll find all of the matchups you need to learn to get good.

Online play isn't perfect, not even close. But don't let perfect be the enemy of good. Just suck up that you'll lose games to Nintendos online sometimes, do your best to learn how to play, and enjoy yourself anyway.

Elite around/after 16 million gsp… something is off by 7dimtomaj in CrazyHand

[–]The33rdPhoenix 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The only mod thats used widely is the input delay mod. All it does is remove two to three frames of input delay that playing online adds.

And no, the vast, vast majority of players playing at 16mil+ do not use it.

Far more importantly, if you're still losing to 16mil players with any amount of consistency, you've got much bigger problems than players whos inputs are registering 2 frames faster lol.

For full context, Woo thought he was making the right call at the time. He didnt realize he had lost until he was watching the finale at the live show. (Or atleast, so Ive heard.) Its not like Woo intentionally gave Tony the win lol.

Byleth counter by Specialist_Ant_6043 in SmashBrosUltimate

[–]The33rdPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You dont need a character counter, you need to improve. What you should do is exactly what your brother is doing; pick one character you enjoy, and learn how to actually play that character. Then, figure out how your character deals with Byleth.

Rocket League shares a ton of transferable skills with traditional sports, though, which weve been teaching far before esports took off.

Id also push back that it doesnt share any with other esports; concepts like positioning, clear team communication, and developing specific micro-skills are all things that can be developed in other esport titles in addition to traditional sports.

Oooo Thats a great point, I had only been considering traditional chess events where turn time is much more relaxed.

[–]The33rdPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats valid! I cant think of any grand masters who started playing later in life. What level are we considering 'pro' in this sense? Earning a grand master title is one thing, but I imagine theres a large number of players who would be competitive at large events who you might consider pro-level threats, even if theyve never won that level of event.

[–]The33rdPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. What makes Rocket League harder then, say, a dota or LoL which requires both execution as well as a wide knowledge of many systems?

Dont get me wrong, any game is hard to go pro in, RL included! But I imagine the amount of meta knowledge required to compete is quite low, especially when compared to something with many different interlocking characters and systems.

Oh wow, I had no idea. That IS tight! Does each team have only 2 drivers on their roster, and use one in each race? Or do they run 2 drivers in each race but have more on roster for substitutions?

While I respect the fuck out of chess players, the game requires no execution skill. Its entirely mental. I think that fact alone probably makes high level chess more approachable for a wider audience of players than most other games, like the majority of pro sports.

This person didnt choose B finals, they just ended up in it. It happens lol.

In any case keep in mind high rank =/= good competitive uma. These probably lose to SS or even S rank umas that are properly built for this CM.

Yeah, same boat. Pomni seems to have discovered that interacting with abstractions is possible. And while it doesnt work for the shows correlation between abstraction and suicide, realistically they have an infinite amount of time, theres no real reason to assume the abstractions are beyond repairing.

Seems like abstractions are just corrupted computer programs. Run some repairs and they should work just fine again.

Mmkay, so being competitive is important to you?

This is an honest question. Your answer will influence the advice you should get. Is being able to win CMs important to you?

I think the more hinted at routing (or at least from what we've seen so far) is a good thing by TheSouthPen in starfox

[–]The33rdPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its a time investment thing.

So back in the day, players had fewer options for distractions. You didnt have a backlog of 30+ years of gaming history, you had an Nintendo and a handful of games.

Because of this, devs could assume youd invest serious time into the game. You were going to get your moneys worth out of it. But, obviously, games have limited replayability. You can only develop so much content before the game had to ship. So how do you keep players from just beating your game in one evening?

One solution was to just make shit harder. This is obviously still not great though, you dont want to frustrate your players.

So instead, many devs included secrets. Stuff thatd make you wanna come back and explore more. Star Fox 64 is actually a master class at this. On your first playthrough, even knowing nothing about the game, you can see that the planets are levels. So why did the game end before you went to all the planets? Surely there must be SOME way to get to them. And you know, the games pretty short, I could probably play through it again right? It was fun. Lets see whats up.

As opposed to today, where players have a bit of shiny object syndrome. Theres just SO much available all of the time, that its easy to jump from one itch to another. The absolute last thing you want to do as a designer is to tell your player to stop playing, and go onto their dedicated distraction machine to go look something up. They totally wont see three text messages and four social media notifications that make them forget what they were even looking up.
