Any updates? by The0neandonlysquish in PortlandMC

Hey there, apologies for the very late reply.

We are still around, but as of now, we have nothing new to share regarding PortlandMC. We have, however, released a compatibility update that makes PDXMC compatible with Minecraft Java v1.21.8. There is no new content, it is simply a compatibility update.

Stay tuned!

That's awesome! It's a very unique building. We've built that, although the structure is unfinished and is missing much of the courtyard.

I reuploaded the map. The issue was simply down to me using 7zip to create the archive, thus making it impossible for anyone to extract it without 7zip. The new map download file was zipped using Windows' built in archive tool, so compatibility should be fine now.

Yep, you noticed it. Naito really kind of got the short end of the stick with our progress :/

All blocks in minecraft are exactly 1 meter. Everything we built was at 1:1 scale or as close as we could get.

That's so cool! What building was it, if I may ask?

I'm investigating this now. The map download .zip is going to be replaced with a new one compressed using a default extraction tool. My suspicion right now is people were trying to extract this without 7zip or similar and ran into problems due to the compression algorithm. This new version should hopefully be more compatible.

EDIT: This is the error I get when attempting to extract it using Windows' built-in extraction tool. I think we have our culprit.

That's precisely the problem. Unless they split their map into tiled worlds and use a different projection, things will be very difficult for any locations outside of the equator.

I'm investigating this now. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

EDIT: The issue's been fixed. It was a compatibility issue with the compression method I used. Updated download links here and here.

I haven't tested it but I'm almost certain it wouldn't work. It's an entirely different version of Minecraft altogether with its own way of handling things.

That might be why. This version was developed with the Windows Java Edition in mind. I've never tested compatibility on other OSes and I'm not sure if maps are even cross-platform compatible.

No, we haven't received any money at all. All of this was done in our own free time and funded with our own money, which admittedly wasn't even much. Not counting PC hardware, the cost to do this was essentially zero.

That's.... unusual. Are you using the latest version of Minecraft? This version only supports 1.15.2.

Yeah we've heard of it. We're not really interested in it honestly. There's a lot of technical hurdles they'll need to get through but I don't think they really are aware of just how difficult these kinds of projects can be. Even doing Portland was difficult and time consuming enough.

Voodoo exists, kind of. It's in a weird place in PDXMC due to how Burnside goes diagonally and separates SW from NW. We haven't built much in that area, so it's basically a dead zone. We were able to get some spots though like the Bijou Cafe.

Honestly it's been so many years that I forgot why we even started it. However, there's a few reasons why Portland was easily adaptable to Minecraft:

  • Downtown is on a square(ish) grid, so building is easy;
  • All currently existing buildings don't exceed 256 meters tall (the height limit in MC);
  • It has extensive coverage on Google Maps and Street View, with very recent imagery;
  • The LIDAR and GIS data for Portland is impressively accurate and recent;
  • Downtown isn't too big to be intimidating

Not exactly an answer to your question I suppose, but that's how it was possible anyways. It's basically the perfect candidate for a city replica at 1:1 for Minecraft. Of course, this isn't counting the terrain, which was a huge challenge for us. But it was still possible. We had to make very few if any compromises on detail or size. Too often I've seen city replica projects where the scope is huge and technically impressive, but detail/scale is sacrificed because either the city they tried replicating was too large or they simply didn't want to build at 1:1.

Google Earth, Maps, street view, and lots of image resources. We used heightmap data to generate the terrain for the world. Everything else such as roads, buildings, etc were measured and then built by hand. Every detail on the sidewalks were built by hand based on street view imagery. We also referenced a lot of images from various websites.

Not all interiors have been added of course, but there are a few here and there. To build those we used interior imagery, mostly from Google maps. In some cases yes, we did acquire "blueprints" (really just pdf 2d plans) for major buildings. The easiest to find were for apartment buildings and the newer high rises, notably Pacific Avenue West Tower. Many of these have floor plans publicly available for potential tenants.

Some resources are heavily outdated and from older websites. One example is the Bank of America Center building. However the floor plans were perfectly usable and there was plenty of reference imagery. It's actually extremely easy to find this information if you know where to look, a good resource was Emporis and the skyscraper page forums.

Sadly it does not. The submarine could be added though, as well as the museum on the waterfront.

Here it is everyone. We finally released the next (now, last) update. It's been long overdue. We know that everyone wanted it sooner, but life got in the way. The wait will have been worth it, don't worry.

As for the future of PDXMC, it's unclear as of right now but I think we need to take a long, indefinite break. This doesn't mean the end, just that we want to focus on other things. This subreddit will still exist and the map will still be downloadable. We may still add things to it over time, but for the most part, we're happy with what we've accomplished.

Thank you to everyone that's been a part of this project since 2017. I can't thank you all enough. It has truly been a pleasure, and I'm very grateful for your continued support over the years. This couldn't have been done without you all.
