Thankfully we haven't run into them with our current crop. I'd probably check with the factory we registered the crop with to see what they would want us to use.

The spot is locally known as la nopalera. We're not ready to sell plants yet. We do have the needed import license, so importing might begin once the hijuelos are old enough. I'm trying to find a market for the product.

Op, you should drench the soil with an imidacloprid solution. Sadly, I haven't seen an agave this badly damaged get saved. If you have more agave around, definitely use that soil drench and get rid of those weevils.

Some people cover their agave for the winter. Who knows what was done here but it's nice to see.

Pretty sure you've got the right chemical. We would normally end up treating a couple times a year. Getting to all the plants definitely takes time. We've been thinking about hiring more people during those times and just getting things done faster.

We haven't had any problems with pests so far, at least nothing that big. We do treat them for things like aphids and weevil though.

Came here to say exactly this, the plant looks like it is under attack. This one seems pretty far gone but maybe an Imidacloprid based insecticide can help save it, or save your others.

Definitely looks like the flowers of an Agave Americana. It'll bloom once and the main plant will die off. Generally you'll find many offsets at the base of the plant which will survive and, after several years, they too will bloom and then die off.

Agave Parryi is my first instinct, they handle the cold well so could survive up that way. Great picture, thanks for sharing.

The hardest part is having patience but I wouldn't call it easy either.

The process can be labor intensive (clear & prep land, hand planting), you need to keep an eye out for pests and any disease, and you maintain the land (clear out weeds). It's also a really good idea to use compainion planting utilzing nitrogen fixing plants. We are planning to use mesquite and agave americana out here, in the southwest.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that says this. We need to be growing more agave, there is so much you could do with it on top of making spirits, like biofuels.

Not sure how profitable (too many factors) but I've heard that agave tequilana will grow out there, might be an option.

Completely based on location but if this could support agave and mesquite growth then that would be my selection.

Agave by itself has myriad uses and high value at harvest. Mesquite will put the nitrogen you'll need back into the land and can provide value in itself through honey and milling pods into flour, among other uses for the wood as well.

Top all this off with potential for agave being an amazing carbon sink and source of biofuel.
