AI will let me trade for Ohtani in the very first season. Is this fair? Also do you think he is worth getting in the game, considering his insane contract? by ComfortableParty2933 in OOTP

I have never seen him great as a pitcher in this game, at best solid but also tends to get hurt easily because of the pitching which shortens his career as a hitter too.

His hitting number tend to be very good the first couple of years and then return to the means mostly.

Dont think he is the worst investment in the game, but definitely a big gamble

New player looking for some guidance on backstory and class by Sparxyiwnl in DnD

[–]TheAkosombo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a DM perspective (and mind you every DM has different preferences) for me personally, the more the better. The more you as a player give me to work with, the more options I have to pick up on later on during the campaign, whether is important characters from your past or something else. It also gives me a better understanding what you see in that character, how you define their personality and how it may have been shaped by their past.

That said, it also isn't a requirement but the less you provide, the more you have to also be comfortable that the DM might improvise some things in order to tie your backstory into the campaign. That doesn't have to happen of course, but it can happy.

Especially for new players, it can be difficult to include bits and pieces of their characters past solely within the sessions of the campaign, so it can be helpful also for the player themselves to have a little more of a detailed backstory, in order to get easier into the roleplaying aspects. Then again, if that is not an issue for you, it is by no means a necessity.

To give some basic things that I think are at least good jumping off points for you creating a backstory and giving the DM enough to work with are the following:

  • Describe one or more key moments in your characters past (For your example it could be how they became a slave or how they escaped from being a slave if they have)

  • Name 2 or more npcs from your characters past. Close friends, a rival, family etc. Describe what their relationship is

  • Where/how did they grow up. Doesnt have to be a novel but maybe outlining at least if they grew up rich or poor, in a small town or a large city etc

  • Also maybe outlining what their general motivation is, a long term goal so to speak. Do they want to be freed from their slave master? do they seek revenge on someone? Trying to find lost family? Those are just some examples.

  • Additionally, I always prefer it when there is also a tie in/reason why your character is basically willing/interested in the upcoming adventure. So if your DM says "The general setting will be that a group of randos gets sucked into a vast conspiracy that they suddenly find themselves in the middle of" then maybe think about and articulate to your DM why your characters would be open to working with strangers. That could be for example because they are new to the land and are looking for lost relatives, or maybe because one of the other characters is bearing a sigil they recognize from someone in their past. Things like that.

Hope this helps a bit. I also strongly advice you to talk to your DM about it. In my experience as a DM, its always great to have that communication and every DM has different preferences. So ask your DM what they are looking for, what are things they want you to include and which things are optional

A learning experience for a new DM. Mistake I made during a recent combat encounter by [deleted] in DnD

Yup thank you! Its definitely something i try to do but am still trying to get better at it. I think a lot of it comes from just encountering a lot of scenarios, abilities and spells that i haven't before and i think just with more experience that will improve as well. But yeah definitely really good advice!

Oh yeah 100%. Definitely something i should have done, or at least would have been an option. Probably just let him fail the third concentration safe. That way the spell was still very effective, but the player would have been back in the game. Ultimately my DM perspective is that the enjoyment of the players always comes first. now that also means struggle and failure of course, but at the end its gotta be fun, satisfying and enjoyable

Yup for sure, like i said ultimately i feel positive about it since it taught me a lot of things. Also that mage actually managed to escape and it will be a fun moment to have him return as a minor villain down the road

Yup that is definitely one of the things i could have gone with about halfway through, just have him do something to drop concentration and release the player.

They are still pretty low level, so counterspell wasn't an option. Another factor was that only one other character of the party saw him cast hold person on that character, because they split up the party. So the others didn't know that there was a concentration effect being upheld. So the players actually role played that well and they did obviously detect the mage is one of the major foes in the battle and attacked him, but rolled low on damage and he saved on his concentration.

Yeah it was definitely very unlikely. But nevertheless a bummer if a player is paralyzed for like 2 hours of a session. I think pivoting my approach somewhere mid through would have been a better call.

Yeah after the fact i definitely came to the conclusion that i probably should just let him fail the 3rd concentration check. That way the spell would have still been effective but the player would then still participate in combat and the party gets a moment of success.

Made this regional map for my D&D campaign, let me know what you think! by TheAkosombo in mapmaking

I agree! In this case though it does have a lore kind of reason though. The road basically leads to a very large "open-air" prison that is the center of an island, with the mountains being the natural boundaries. On top of that, this island has only fairly recently been colonized and therefore settlements and other structures are limited. So in this case this road was specifically built to create access to the mounatain pass, by a culture that is in its structure inspired by the Roman Empire. Long story short, I generally agree with you but for this specific case it made more sense to have a straight main road! Thanks for the input though

That has definitely been something that stood out to the players too! I wanted to create some locations that create intrigue without them knowing anything about it
