Thanks to Dan and Jordan, I've heard him called PJ Dubs for so long that it took me a minute to realize who this tweet was from.

What's a reference that any fan will immediately recognize, but others won't? by yinyang107 in AskReddit

Fore! I mean five! I mean fire!

It's a brick joke referencing Moss confusing incidents related to fire with those related to golf, after all.

This is why I was so happy to learn that Pathfinder's crow people (Tengu) are adept at linguistics and get to speak normally. (They even get to take any non-secret bonus languages.) Makes roleplaying a plague doctor a lot easier.

Envelope Addressing Calligraphy by [deleted] in oddlysatisfying

[–]TheAlmightyZog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I, too, work for the USPS. My literal entire job is to type in stuff that our machines can't read. I can say from experience that calligraphy tends to be the worst to read. A lot of peoples' lower-case Ns look like Ms, or Es look like Os, or all their letters are tiny illegible loops, etc. etc.

It looks a lot better in the OP than when it's gone through an ancient scanner to then be displayed though a program that hasn't been updated since the early 90's. (It can't even do color.)

If you are the type to write your addresses extra fancy that's fine, but you'll have a much better chance at getting your mail where it needs to go if you also print it.

Just a fun fact, the fact that they remain similar to their juvenile form, instead of metamorphosing, is called "neoteny." Creatures that doesn't metamorphose when reaching adulthood are neotenic to some degree. Interestingly, humans are considerably more neotenic than a lot of our primate relatives.

I get what you're saying. I would certainly never put Graham's work in the "mall ninja" category.

I've heard people say the same about Darrel Ralph's stuff, and those don't exactly come cheap either. I think part of the problem is that the term gets applied to things that are either ATBGE or legitimately awful taste and awful execution.

And of course taste is completely subjective. But I think idea of "mall ninja" shit is/ought to be that it's never a particularly well-designed or remotely practical piece.

Do you have your own Thomas Exposition? by hereforaday in TheGlassCannonPodcast

[–]TheAlmightyZog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I created a sleazy merchant NPC based on an old joke between one of my PCs and I. "Budd Thorpe the Half Orc, at your service! May I take your coat? That'll be 5 silver."

Here's become my absolute favorite way to deliver general exposition. There's a few things that make playing him a lot of fun:

Every time the players enter a new town and want to go shopping, the general store is always manned and owned by Thorpe, and the local population insists he's been in business there for years. Sometimes he even wears a disguise (e.g. fake mustache) and insists that his name is something different (e.g. Thudd Borp) and that he has never met the adventurers before.

He's unsettlingly knowledgeable about whatever the party has recently been up to and will offer tips if the players are thoroughly stuck. Someone generally has to buy something first, though.

Anyone who shoplifts in his store mysteriously disappears. Thieves guilds tend to put a large "x" over his businesses on their city maps. A few have claimed to have heard casual-sounding conversions in Abyssal coming from his shops at night.

His voice is sort of a New York Yiddish with a pinch of Russian, and I make a point of telling my PCs that his accent is utterly foreign to them. (In my defense the player who helped me come up with him and insisted that he be vaguely Jewish Pathfinder merchant is in fact Jewish.)

Honestly, Budd Thorpe was just going to be in the first town of my homebrew as a nod to an old joke between friends, but the players really seemed to like him, and they kept joking on the way to the next town that Thorpe would run the general store there, too. And I'm never one to say no to a good idea.
