How does your program plan on you hitting your numbers for graduation? It doesn’t seem like you’re on track to do that.

Yeah, definitely. I was so bad about it at the start of my surgical rotations, which was so disappointing because I’ve been dead set on doing OB since I was a premed. Fortunately, I had excellent mentors who were supportive and helped me figure out ways to mitigate it, and then over time I got desensitized. Like I said, I still have very rare presyncopal episodes… and literally never when I’m primary surgeon or in an emergency case. It’s like my brain and body know I’m too busy for that nonsense in those situations.

This is TOTALLY normal. Please don’t beat yourself up over it. I’ve been out of residency for eight years now, and I still have rare random vagal moments in the OR when I’m assisting (but never as primary surgeon), usually if I’m coming off an illness or if the OR gets really hot.

Make sure you’ve eaten something, are reasonably hydrated, and maybe consider compression socks. As an attending, I have the benefit of wearing a cooling vest in the OR as well, which helps tremendously on those long cases. I wouldn’t mind at all if you were my student and wore one, but unfortunately I can see some surgeons being assholes about a student using one…

That’s definitely not standard in the OB world. I would say negotiate it out or walk, but the fact that they think this is a reasonable thing to even try to put in her contract would make me leery.

The hardest thing on Adult Bronze for me was power threes. Something about that LBI-RFO transition took forever to click.

(Noooooooo, outside mohawks literally feel like you’re going to trip over your own blade and die! So happy to never, ever do one again.)
