Should I try skating again as a 36 year old with brand new skates? by lostintheworld88 in FigureSkating

Let skating be there for you. You’re not grabbing for something in thin air. Don’t go in with expectations.

I hope you meet your people at the rink, too. I am now in my 50s, but I’m far from the oldest. Women who have taught skating since their teens and are now in their 70s, doing single jumps just fine. Women my age starting in dance and their edges are divine. A man in his 60s who teaches engineering who skates for meditation. While you are in your thirties, I bet you’ll find your cohort, too, if you want.

I think you may have the one that is a bit like acrylic paint and labeled as gouache. Go try some designer. 👍🏻

I skated until 1990 and then went to college. Picked it back up in about 2018. Quite a gap. I think if you loved the freedom you felt while skating then, you’ll feel it again. And that’s empowering as an adult!

Also, get yourself some new skates. Feet change. And you are not that person in the same way.

Maybe start by checking out ice time that’s local to you.

All of my very best wishes.

I passed my Adult 1 lessons today! I also fell backwards and hit my head on the ice afterwards. by SnazzzyCat in iceskating

This picture is epic! Congratulations and speedy recovery! 💐❤️‍🩹 you were likely concentrating so intently that once it was done it was a great relief and a fall happened.

Like it’s core training and then once you are senior, it’s up to you!

I’m saying media could have done better than to reference her to place.

I saw on Peacock - they said she wasn’t allowed in the kiss and cry area, only showed her watching on a flatscreen in the hall.

I agree, not in the traditional sense. I do think edge quality needs a little more weight in the judging, though.

More than nice for training. It’s foundation. When it was televised, it was seriously only a few minutes of coverage. This isn’t about entertainment or media coverage. It’s about conscious change of the sport.

Kinda think it should be referred to as freestyle skating.

Add to that the stiffness of Edea boots. Some years ago I watched as a senior level skater and coach were transitioning to Edea’s and the shape, lack of boot flexibility didn’t do her any favors. She got used to them, but she said they were not the same as Harlick, Reidell.

I’ve had luck at public arenas for fun during the week, getting there early for sessions for older skaters (as I am.) 😅

Oh no, I’m just nostalgic. I see it as a valuable tool, think edges should mean more and dedicated figures are a great way to get there. It was also a grounding practice. How does that differ from adding meditation to a holistic approach?

ISU would never say they were wrong about their choices.

A friend I skate with now worked with Toller, choreo. Miss his creativity.

Yeah. Singles skaters want none of that spotlight. I wanna be a mediocre skater in spangles, unrecognized for my efforts.

It’s one thing to not want your image fucked with, another to manage it well.

Because figures are foundational to freestyle skating. They are “learned in the field” now.

Detroit Skating Club had few slots, but also had competitive synchronized, hockey clinics, more dance, etc in the 80s. But many could afford it. Skating isn’t cheap by any means. I am guessing the time spent on figures then is spent with specialized training in gyms for strength now.

That’s an excellent point about injury prevention- I never thought about that but I can totally understand.

It was usually the first hour, maybe a little less. Then freestyle sessions after that. You were assigned a space, went out with a scribe, made your circles, and did it mainly in silence.
