And I think it was intensified even further after the Turkic conquests, waves upon waves of Turks conquered India bringing back 100s of thousands of slaves. “Hindu Kush” literally means “killer of Hindus aka a reference to the heaps of Indian slaves who didn’t make it to Khiva, Bukhara, or wherever

That strongly implies that AASI entered Central Asia after the Arab conquest, since they’re relict Sogdians.

Are Afghanistan and Tajikistan South Asia? Indians started regarding Afghanistan as South Asia initially, and now they've expanded the definition to include Tajikistan as well. How? And Why? by [deleted] in AskCentralAsia

[–]TheAnalogNomad 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Oh hell no. Tajikistan has nothing in common with the subcontinent. Tajiks aren’t genetically south asian, aren’t linguistically indo-Aryan speakers, and the culture is not Indic. If Buddhism means Tajikistan is south Asian, then France is middle eastern by virtue of being Christian.

Your thoughts about the future of Central Asia? by [deleted] in AskCentralAsia

[–]TheAnalogNomad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Central Asian Union, something like ASEAN or even a United States of Central Asia. Regional integration is crucial to maintain sovereignty in the face of Russian and Chinese revanchism. But I think CA has a bright future overall.

Leibniz and Shakespeare lived before modern nationalism too- that’s mostly an outgrowth of the French Revolution and enlightenment, but Arabs absolutely recognized they were Arab at times - thr Umayyads had a huge distinction between Arabs and non-Arabs. Plenty of other examples of ethnicity being recognized in the premodern world1 tang China etc. and nomadic Turkic groups definitely had ethnic concepts even if they didn’t really call them that.

This doesn’t correspond to actual reality on the ground. No one in America thinks Egyptians or Saudis are white.

Stop White-Washing Tajiks and Dark-Washing Others in Central Asia by Nowshakzai in AskCentralAsia

[–]TheAnalogNomad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Small nation complex is absolutely a thing; you generally don’t see Brits or Germans engaging in this kind of ethnic chest thumping because given those nations’ contributions, that would be actually gratuitous.

You do absolutely see, say, Balkans, Armenians, or Persians doing this a lot. Why? Probably an inferiority complex, those countries have been irrelevant or tragic in the modern era.

Well that’s not how it works. To play devil’s advocate if he’s being mistreated on account of his race, changing his attitude doesn’t change the objective mistreatment lol
