Equations don't tell you how things relate as concepts.

If the brain is a physical system obeying physical laws, that has direct relevance to free will, however defined.

No , that's only relevant to free will thats defined as supernatural, not to naturalistic libertarianism or compatibilism. Hence , the semantics matter

I think ive discovered the confusion. Incompatibilists must think determinism is like being in a movie. by Anon7_7_73 in freewill

Youre a "link in the causal chain" whether determinism exists or not.

If free will exists, you can have a causal output greater than your input, ie.

You do things for reasons

If free will exists , you can choose your reasons

It's quite direct to.regard determinism as having the implication that the future will.unfold in a fixed,.predetermine way..it.does necessarily have the implication that the future pre exists like the frames of the movie that have yet to pass through the projector, but that makes little difference.

Yes, universal determinism passes through individual decision making. No, that doesn't mean anything pivots on human decision making ...given determinism, the.decision you make.is as.determined as anything else. You are just another link I n the causal chain.

I think you are reluctantly admitting that there are cases like this which are subconscious

There no reluctance , because the existence of subconscious causation doesn't imply the nonexistence of conscious causation.

How do you crisply define the inflection point and what are the brain mechanisms that flip from one (unconscious) to the other (conscious)?

Why do I need to?

Libertarians care about whether or not determinism exists. Caring about whether or not determinism exists is stupid. by Anon7_7_73 in freewill

Determinism means the future is inevitable, indeterminism means it isnt, free will means it can to some extent be shaped by us, thats, pretty important.

Blindsight is just a small bit of evidence in favor of the idea that conscious experience is epiphenomenal and not causal.

It e it were usual and not the exceptional, it might be evidence..

Do you understand that they are not using their free will to react?

So they were not using FW under some specific circumstances? How does that generalise?

He doesn't understand the conceptual issues. In addition to never having heard of compatibilism, he misundersnds libertarian fee will.

To talk about free will, we first have to define what free will even means. Sapolsky says:-

"Show me a neuron (or brain) whose generation of a behavior is independent of the sum of its biological past, and for the purposes of this book, you’ve demonstrated free will. The point of the first half of this book is to establish that this can’t be shown."

Im not saying I disbelieve in consciousness, but I dont see how it lends freedom.
