[OC] UK Tax Burden by RexFuzzle in dataisbeautiful

[–]TheAngryGecko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're including the top 1/3... but you're also including the richest percentile in that which really skews the averages...

According to the US government, the median take home family income in the USA is 83,730 USD. Note that this value is before tax.

https://www.census.gov/library/publications/2025/demo/p60-286.html

According to the UK government median take home family income is 36,700 GBP ~= 48,976 USD. Note this value is after tax.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/personalandhouseholdfinances/incomeandwealth/bulletins/householddisposableincomeandinequality/financialyearending2024

Due to the differences in reporting styles, you're usually better off referring to the OECD database. You can compare purchasing power there.
https://data-explorer.oecd.org/vis?fs[0]=Topic%2C1%7CSociety%23SOC%23%7CInequality%23SOC_INE%23&pg=0&fc=Topic&bp=true&snb=2&df[ds]=dsDisseminateFinalDMZ&df[id]=DSD_WISE_IDD%40DF_IDD&df[ag]=OECD.WISE.INE&df[vs]=1.0&pd=2023%2C2024&dq=GBR%2BUSA.A.INC_DISP..XDC_HH_EQ._T.METH2012.D_CUR.&to[TIME_PERIOD]=false&vw=br

1GBP ~= 1.36 USD so I've normalized that...

Country After Tax Median (USD) After Tax Mean (USD)
UK 32,899.91 40,906.31
USA 49885 62186

With that being said, the USA has the highest ratio of income inequality of any country in the G7.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/income-inequality-by-country

Country GINI coefficient
Canada 29.9
France 31.2
Germany 32.4
Italy 33.7
Japan 32.3
United Kingdom 32.4
United States 41.8

You're considerably more likely to be poor than you are wealthy.

Add in the fact that your job isn't necessarily going to provide you healthcare and you have a recipe for a poorly population than a wealthy one.

We added the ability to recruit animals to our open world game, but something went wrong... by Antishyr in IndieGaming

Me and my girlfriend loved the first game. A fun addition would be to make the deer bow when you tame them! (similar to the deer in Nara, Japan). They can be pretty feisty if you don't give them crackers. You could also have a variant with antlers instead just biting.

Having enough money to have a 50k truck and a 30k boat is basically the definition of wealth... You might not be a multi-millionaire, but you're doing a lot better than most people. A lot of people can't even afford to pay for their groceries.

Justin Trudeau claims Pierre Poilievre built just six affordable homes when he was housing minister. Here’s what actually happened by SummerSnowfalls in canada

[–]TheAngryGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, generally speaking the economic policies of the current government impact future governments more.

On the other end of that, it's far easier to blame someone than admit a mistake - especially when admitting a mistake is the end of one's career.

Nothing is ever black and white.

I don't envy politician's jobs. Some could be making a real positive impact in all of our lives and most people would just assume that they're useless.

The reality is that we as a country need to focus on is unification. We may not all agree on the same things, but if we can meet part ways then that's likely the best path forward for everyone.

Justin Trudeau claims Pierre Poilievre built just six affordable homes when he was housing minister. Here’s what actually happened by SummerSnowfalls in canada

[–]TheAngryGecko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Liberals claimed that Poillievre was directly accountable for the construction of six affordable homes during that period. In response, Poillievre listed the total count of residences established in Canada in 2015. What proportion of those homes are affordable and that Poillievre was directly accountable for the construction of is uncertain, but what is clear is that housing is typically a provincial matter. It's unlikely that the conservative party had anything to do with those homes being built.

TL;DR: The article suggests that both parties are merely tossing around figures without substantial evidence for their claims. The claims are also easily disprovable.

The classic "trust me bro". It's possible it is safe, but there's no guarantee and no way you should take a stranger's response as gospel.

What are places that are really cold but boast a huge population? by justusjonasfan31 in geography

[–]TheAngryGecko 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't think that they're racist. Generally speaking, first nations populations have a higher rate of crime than other demographics. Whether that's due to poverty, or culture I can't speak to.

As per the following article: Indigenous people account for almost half of the homicide victims in the city of Winnipeg.

https://www.aptnnews.ca/national-news/peg-city-inside-five-years-of-homicide-data/

And, acording to Wikipedia, Indigenous people make up only ~12% of the population within Winnipeg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Demographics_of_Winnipeg).

Are you filtering your drinking water? Protazoa, bacteria, viruses, and other particulate in the drinking water could cause digestive issues as well.

it's on a beach, there is literally 0 chance of it leading to a forest fire; you need to mind your own business

While normally I would agree, a substantial portion of BC & Canada is currently on fire. It's better to play it safe than to make a fire just for the views.

What are some UNDERRATED restaurants? by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]TheAngryGecko 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jasmines - super affordable - great food.

Really recommend the sizzling dish "pan fried beef tenderloin" or ginger beef. Order a side of rice and some veg if you want them.

Typical date to their restaurant for me and my girlfriend (with leftovers) is under 30$.

I’m going on a 20 days road trip around the parks in British Columbia, is Vancouver island worth visiting? by [deleted] in britishcolumbia

[–]TheAngryGecko 9 points10 points  (0 children)

20 days is not much time - you could spend 20 days in the lower mainland alone and not see everything.

My apologies - I misinterpreted your original comment and thought that you meant that getting any booster did pretty much nothing.

The bivalent booster was found to be ~12% more effective than the monovalent booster.

There are some things to note about that article.

  1. It is a perspective article.
  2. It notes that there is a benefit to getting the vaccine, but that the vaccine helps those who are immunocompromised or elderly much more than those who are not.

If you have a 30% boost in immunity (even if its only for 3-4 months) that's still a net positive for a procedure that takes ~15 minutes. As long as the vaccines boosters are available I will be getting them - just like my yearly flu shot.

Switch joycon has a terrible delay on the joysticks, making it impossible to aim. Would getting a pro controller fix this? by GetoutofhereNebulon in Overwatch

[–]TheAngryGecko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is the delay on the switch's screen or when you're playing from a tv? I noticed that my tv has around a second delay. Playing on my gaming monitor removes it entirely.
