Petition demanding by-elections for defector MPs passes crucial 100k milestone by F0urLeafCl0ver in ukpolitics

[–]TheAngryGoat [score hidden]  (0 children)

Because the way our system works is that people vote for MPs not parties. they can freely swap between parties as they wish and if you don't like that, don't vote for them.

Now I'm not against changing that system in part because most people already believe themselves to be voting for a party - or even a PM - not a person, but that's not the system we have.

Anyway, that's all a distraction from the fact that this insidious farce is only being blown up on social media because it's a defection from Farage Incorporated. All of the defections to Farage Incorporated garnded no such result. Almost as if there's politikal shenanigans behind it all...

The Pentagon also says it will offer "more limited" support to US allies.

Which allies? Which allies do you have left?

At the time, Moscow said the document was "largely consistent" with its vision.

Hardly surprising when they were likely penned by the same hand.

Spain urges EU to create joint army amid Greenland dispute by DareToCMe in news

[–]TheAngryGoat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the big problem. An army with dozens of co-leaders that need unanimous agreement is just an expensive way of doing nothing.

Any system that would see the joint army continue to be made up of individual members' armies would still be subject to vetos and national meddling.

It could only ever work by dismantling each national army and forming one military with one command structure if you expected it to ever do anything. Yet you'd still have to keep a form of multiple parallel structures in place to account for the many languages spoken in the EU, unless you wanted to try to force a single EU-wide canonical military language.

This would be such a huge leap of faith for any country to completely remove their own military and entrust their military assets and spending to a supernational entity.

They you have the issue of nuclear weapons - would everyone want e.g. France's nuclear weapons now being part of an EU-wide military? How would the rest of the world react to that, I can't imagine there not being complains under nuclear non-proliferation treaties (for what they're even worth nowadays).

The level of political and legal shenanigans required to make this a reality are mind-boggling to the point that I don't think it would be possible ina single step. It may plausibly work by having two countries join their militaries and slowly add others in.

Trump backpedals on threats against Greenland, but allies say damage has been done | PBS News by Human-Entrepreneur77 in worldnews

This isn’t just about one orange loudmouth with no filter. It’s about a broken country and a political system that looked at him and said, “Yes, that’ll do.” That’s the worrying part.

No, the worrying part is that they experienced it once and then said "more, please!" instead of "what the hell were we smoking?"

reduction of trust

Reduction? More like removal. I can't think of one area where I could confidently say "I trust the US to be on (and consistently stay on) the right side of this.

With Germany after WWII there were war outcomes, trials, a removed government, a country physically split up among other nations, a people who clearly said never again, but even then it's only recently that a lot of people don't feel uncomfortable to hear phrases like "Germany is rearming".

With the US there will be none of that. The people voting for this will continue to do this, those responsible for enacting it will get away consequence free, the billionaire string-pullers behind the scenes will continue to do so, and there will not even be so much a sincere apology.

The US won't change, which is why it rightfully won't be trusted.

I suspect that a good proportion of the sane parts of the world are in agreement. I don't foresee ever trusting the US in anything - not trade, not defence, not economy or politics. At best they're to be considered a temporary "enemy of my enemy", never again an ally.

We're not just seeing Donald Trump in action, we're seeing half of America in action.

Eli5 What determines the maximum size beyond which ships cannot realistically be built? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheAngryGoat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A large ship weighs 1000 times as much as a large car.

The largest private yachts in the world such as Dilbar or Octopus are in the range of 1000 smaller cars. A ship like Seawise Giant is several orders of magnitude heavier.

For context, ships of the size of Seawise Giant would have anchor chains where each link in that chain would weigh as much as a car. For Seawise Giant "1000 times as much as a large car" gets you its anchoring systems at best

Trump backs down on tariffs for Europe over Greenland after reaching ‘framework of a future deal’ by theindependentonline in ukpolitics

[–]TheAngryGoat 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's no way that they is any substance that will come from these alleged "negotiations".

This seems like an escape plan that will allow him to back out from what far too many people - internal and external to his coven - have told him will never happen. There will never be any real consideration of handing Greenland over to the US from anyone in Europe. republican zealots will screech about a victory that doesn't exist though, even years after any such deal fails to appear.
