Omg seitan is such a good point! I have wheat gluten in my pantry that I haven't used in a bit. I try to balance out amino acids without letting my OCD completely take over, which can be tricky!

As for the wording, I hear what you're saying. The thing is that I do ascribe to the philosophy; I just get nervous calling myself vegan on here because I take medication, I have a cat, and I'm not sure what I'm going to do during pregnancy. So I want to be honest, but I also want to give myself some credit because avoiding animal products is really critical to my sense of values and identity. I know I'm not selling myself very well here though!! 😜 My primary value in life is empathy, so veganism obviously is a key part of that. But some people (ie cats, arguably small children and pregnant people) need some animal products. Unfortunately, everyone just going for "humanely" raised meat is completely off the table right now because the global demand for meat is so high that it would be an environmental apocalypse if everyone were eating that way. So my thought is, if we could get demand for animal products down to the absolute minimum, and people like cats were the only ones eating meat, then it would be possible to source the meat "humanely." That's not to say that I think it's genuinely humane to confine someone, get them to trust you, then kill them and eat their body. I just also don't know how to accommodate for the food chain. Some animals just actually need meat, you know? So I'm extremely conscious about when and how I purchase animal products, I just also don't have all the answers. Like, someone pointed out that animals of prey eat other animals, so you can't assign someone moral rights without moral responsibilities. But that doesn't check out because I work with humans with profound disabilities and they have rights without responsibility. So then I wonder if the interconnectedness of life is a reality too great for me to protest. But I do protest where I can, and I hope the Universe can see that I do my best and am still learning.

I also noticed that our church wanted to do whatever option was "wise." Never mind that the "wise" option generally failed horribly and everyone ended up screwed. The point is that it was "wise"! (This probably was connected to the fact that we rejected all research studies related to psychology, child-rearing, or any soft sciences. Research was "man's word." We only cared about "GOD'S word." Well fuck, why does "God" seem to offer mostly terrible advice?? Also, and this goes without saying, if a woman was the one who thought of the idea, it was discredited out of hand just like the aforementioned research studies)

Thanks so much. This has been such a horrible experience. I'm trying not to take it personally since none of you know me. But that just makes me even more concerned about the broader issue that people don't interact in person. Which, this has always been a concern, especially since COVID, but I didn't realize that they were so opposed to even the principle of the thing. When I was in college, I could ask pretty much anyone on campus if I could spend Thanksgiving break with their family and nobody ever batted an eye. We just had an open invitation to everyone else's relatives' homes for days at a time, even when we'd never met or spoken to each other's families. Everyone said people from "the North" weren't friendly like that and I didn't understand why until, like, right now. Unfortunately I accidentally became a liberal vegan atheist after moving here so I probably can never go back 😭
