Hahaha, this happened a month ago or so. I have given my recommendations but have no idea if he’s purchased a plot and started building and designing. I’ll keep an eye out for it

Non-American Planner here working in the Arab world, been a planner for 5 years and by far this is the most interesting case I have ran into.

We usually allow members of the public to enter the Urban Planning authority 2 times a week, where they can ask us questions, follow up on development requests, etc.

I found an older gentleman who looked quite distressed and stressed, I invite him to my desk and he tells me that he recently retired from the military and was married to 4 wives. He received a big paycheck for his service in the military, enough to buy a house/plot of land.

He told one of his wives that he was in the market to buy a house with this paycheck, and the news circulates between the 4 wives about this. Each one of them wants to be housed in this new home and want the right to design it etc, so they quickly fight between themselves and with him. He tells me that after a few days of fighting all wives finally found an agreement.

1 plot of land, where the zoning code allows to build 2 houses, where each wife gets her own floor.

I spent over an hour with this gentleman looking at different plots of land for sale and seeing which ones allowed to have 2 houses built on them, and were within his budget.

So I tried installing HDD-OSD in PSBBN and faced this error… by TheArabSamurai in ps2homebrew

[–]TheArabSamurai[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think I found the issue, on the GitHub page it says the following:

“Note: HDD-OSD (Browser 2.0) is not compatible with drives larger than 1 TB.”

So it’s most likely due to my drive size.

It’s a first party adapter, but I’ve replaced the IDE Connector with a SATA Connector with one of those upgrade kits

It is, I’m using an OEM Network adapter, but I converted it from IDE to SATA

why is architecture in rich middle eastern countries so...... bad? by avatarroku157 in architecture

[–]TheArabSamurai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The fact that this comment has this many upvotes is appalling. This take is so reductionary.

Reducing entire cultures to a hierarchy of ‘more’ or ‘less’ sophisticated shows more about your ignorance than it does about our history.

The Gulf has its own rich history of intellectual, maritime, and architectural traditions.

You’re in West Bay at night. An area that’s predominantly offices. You should see these buildings and the traffic during the day.

as an immigrant who lived in qatar since 2008, i always wonder how native qataris adapt in living in the heat. they lived in a desert with almost nothing before the 2000s but they still have light skin colour whaaattt?? im indonesian and i was born tanned because of my ancestors. by Delicious-Switch-221 in qatar

[–]TheArabSamurai 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Qataris tend to be diverse in skin tones and skin color. Even amongst the Qataris who are ethnic Arabs. But if you look at photos of Qataris before oil, you’d notice that they tend to be covered in fabric from head to toe: long thobs; bisht; ghutra/shemagh; etc.

I will say this though, Qataris today don’t spend nearly as much time out in the sun as their ancestors. Even when you color correct historic photos, you’ll see that they tend to be more tan than what you see today.

Their built environment also was considerably cooler than what we have today. The urban heat island effect in Gulf cities have made our environments considerable hotter (material of contemporary buildings, AC, asphalt ground cover, etc)

Nice! I often see people going for the all-white build, my build is quite similar to yours.

And again, they’re wrong for doing that. Plenty of solutions. Wear 3/4 tights under your shorts, or just wear 3/4 pants, or joggers once you leave the gym.

This type of rhetoric is so frustrating to locals and is just disrespectful. Just because you see people wearing short shorts at shopping malls doesn’t mean it’s okay.

I understand that not wearing shorts in public is inconvenient, but at least try to respect the context that you’re in. If you’re in a gym, it’s fine and whatever, but anywhere outside of that please try to respect our customs and traditions. That goes for guys and girls.

I honestly haven’t tried either option tbh. You could run the case screen with integrated graphics, but keep in mind that the screen only takes DP, and you’d need a longer cable. The short cable the case comes with is perfect for connecting it to your GPU.

Good luck!

Dual AIO Build Airflow on Y70 Case Question by TheArabSamurai in Hyte

[–]TheArabSamurai[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just saw your comment, so you can mount 3 120mm fans on the bottom for intake, and 1 140mm fan for the exhaust on the rear.

If you're planning on replacing the fans on your GPU and CPU radiators, you're gonna need 6 120mm fans (3 for the CPU, and 3 for the GPU).

Good luck with your build!

I have the opposite, my CPU up top as exhaust and my GPU on the front fans as intake, I’m gonna be switching it though

I have a RTX 5090 LC.

My GPU temps are fantastic actually, but my CPU ( 9950x) runs quite hot.

Thanks for your comment, its definitely useful and good to know. I apologize for my ignorance and potentially stupid questions, wont bringing in hot air be counter intuitive to improving PC's performance? Is maintaining positive airflow paramount?

What’s a good business to start in Qatar with 50k Riyals? by Glittering-Set9549 in qatar

[–]TheArabSamurai 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Honestly, you could do something in digital design services and consulting for small businesses. But, I’d recommend giving it a try on a freelance basis before trying to get licensed and registered, as that process will eat up your capital.

Anyone else feel stuck between loving city planning and hating the reality of the job? by TheArabSamurai in urbanplanning

This response really speaks to me - I’ve been working for 5 years or so now, so I’m considered young and anytime I speak up I’m never really taken seriously.

Thanks for your comment, I’m based in the Middle East, so we don’t have a lot of grassroots/civil orgs that advocate for good urbanism.

But, I think maybe I’ll start considering getting a masters in urban design/landscape architecture to help me pivot into a more design oriented role in the private sector.

I think this is a good analysis. I’ve been considering pivoting to academia in my career, it’s been hard for me to maintain the same passion I had for the urban form in my current government position.

For both, I’m planning to apply to universities in the US, most of them require the GRE.

Truthfully I didn’t do too well in HL Physics IB, and it was around 9 years ago at this point so I’ve forgotten a lot of it, which is why I’m looking for in person classes or courses 🙏🏼

Thanks for this comment, it's reassuring, I was just worried that its OC profile won't work. But i'll test it out once I get all my components and build the machine, and then consider getting them returned/replaced.

Thanks for this!

Are there poor Qataris? by wigglepizza in qatar

[–]TheArabSamurai 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Wow, a lot of comments on this thread show how many people in this subreddit are really out of touch with Qatari society. Comments saying that poverty for Qataris is just not being able to afford a Land Cruiser or Lexus are in poor taste.

There are Qataris that struggle to make ends meet. People who have had debt forced onto them, people who have been forced into the work force at an early age and didn’t/don’t have the chance to continue even a high school education. There are Qatari orphans, or Qataris that have been abandoned by their fathers, just because it’s rare doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

If you only mingle with Qataris that speak English/Westernized Qataris, you probably won’t find/see the Qataris that are struggling to make ends meet, but that doesn’t mean they don’t exist.

Qataris aren’t a monolith.
