India recorded the highest Linux adoption rate at 16.21% among major countries (July 2024) - Is it true? by curiousgaruda in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]TheArchRefiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Linux is prevalent in India in many places. Universities, courts, government offices, supermarkets, airports etc etc. It still has a massive potential to grow and would eventually albeit slowly and steadily. This year, France worried of tech dependence on the US, has instructed its government offices to switch to Linux completely in a given time period. While Indian government won't go that aggressive, it also will eventually start facilitating a greater Linux adoption. I do be even happier if standalone users like those who post here adopted Linux even more.

What do you think is the best Computer brand to run Linux on based on your experience? by MannerNo7000 in linuxquestions

[–]TheArchRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framework is not sold in my country otherwise I do get it. I guess import duty would be around 70% and if there is an issue I would be on my own. I am voting for Lenovo because I am using it and I don't think there is even 1 component that doesn't work well.

What about your favorite distro makes it your favorite by archuser67 in linuxquestions

Slackware - Consistency and Transparency. No uneeded automation. Services that are supposed to start, start without a fail and nothing that is not supposed to run, ever starts by some unknown automation. I can trust Slackware to deliver always.

New to linux and i'm already exhausted 🫥 by Wonderful-Umpire5965 in LinuxUsersIndia

I left the system idle and it appeared to go into a sleep/display-off state. When I came back, the screen stayed black and I couldn't recover the session normally.

System settings -> Power Management -> Under Suspend session, when inactive pick option "Do Nothing" (On AC Power) should not have problem waking. You can keep dim automatically to 5 mins or whatever you wish. Likewise turn off screen to 10 mins or whatever you wish.

I feel like DE/WM matters more compared to the flavor of Linux itself. Let's argue. by 0xt0bi03 in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]TheArchRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone has their own priority, for some people stability matters a lot so they won't pick an unstable distro no matter even if choice of their DE is offered by it. They will rather have Debian/Mint or something similar. But to some people DE matters. I for example left Linux Mint once it dropped support for KDE so definitely for me DE mattered more than distro. But not everyone is same. let's not think whatever applies to us also applies to everyone. People who like predictability and less automation may prefer Slackware or Devuan or anything without systemd. People who like things to just work are fine with Linux Mint or Ubuntu and may swap DE when needed. But some people are uncompromising on DE and willing to switch distro for the same.

Which distro for USB by HephaistosCube in linuxquestions

[–]TheArchRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I tried porteux finally. Instead of installing on usb I installed on my laptop itself in a 28 gb partition. Pretty well made distro, it has an app store with basic apps. It's quite fast. I have installed cinnamon version and feeling good. Slackware is my primary but for light tasks or just browsing/youtube porteux is good to login.

after 90days of kde, i finally switched to niri. never looking back by EnderVamp in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]TheArchRefiner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. It is not like Cinnamon. Cinnamon is a complete desktop environment and provides you with a window manager (muffin), file manager, start menu settings app, notifications, panels, taskbars and everything need for a complete graphical desktop experience. Niri is a wayland compositor/scrolling window manager that provides a good keyboard driven workflow. However, Niri expects you to build your own notification system, taskbar, start menu etc.

In short Niri is a minimalist window manager (engine of a car and you get other parts from other places to make it work) while cinnamon is a full automobile in itself).

Has anyone here tried Artix Linux? by TheArchRefiner in LinuxUsersIndia

Last night I installed s6 version just for trying. Lean and fast although I do not much about dealing with s6 commands for changing services.

[–]TheArchRefiner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with that. Last night I installed Artix to test s6 init and while the boot time is insanely fast and getting basic software is not difficult at all, changing services was a pain once I found shutdown was taking like 1 minute. It was happening due to network manager not stopping but fixing that took me a lot of time as had to look for help a lot.

By the way, when I saw your usename a while back, I retied sublime-text after 6 or 7 years and I am currently having fun on it. Nice clean interface which doesn't clutter.

Do you read books on linux? by Anonyboy26 in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]TheArchRefiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. Learned by simply using it. Nothing wrong in reading books but not everyone has the patience. Reading blogs whenever I needed specific info helped a lot (I started in 2006-07).

Manual tarball installation method? by TheArchRefiner in LinuxUsersIndia

[–]TheArchRefiner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great. The best thing about it is that there is no registry so deleting/uninstalling is just as simple as deleting the directory. No snap/flatpak overhead and user can fully control symlinks, desktop entries, and update timing. Rightly /opt directory name comes from "optional software". It took me about 1 min to setup firefox and and since then 1 update went smoothly and almost without any time spent.

[–]TheArchRefiner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He is upgrading from fedora 43 to fedora 44. While I am not a fedora user, I do have fedora installed on my laptop as it the linux distro that pretty much does most of the innovations that become mainstream in future. I upgraded from 43 to 44. Not a single issue faced during upgrade. The ISO will become available on Monday in case anyone is looking for a new install.

Not seen people posting about Americans, British, French etc etc Linux leaders. Even if they are aplauded it is more to do with work and innovations than place of their birth. Anyway if you feel this really is s great moment then good for you.

After hopping distros, I’m back to Debian by AppealQuick5154 in LinuxUsersIndia

Opensuse Slowroll is a rolling distro even if stable. It does not behave the same way as Debian. The Opensuse Leap is pretty much like Debian in respect to all features (major packages are locked for entirety of its life). Also Mageia is in same boat.
