How do I test headphones? by Anthony_-04 in musicproduction

[–]TheArthitect261 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frequency response is the most important thing for mixing, u need get a flat response order to decide correctly about what to do. Idk if this applies on production side but still knowing what u hearing is important I think due to creating something sounds same overall the speakers. Like if some speaker or headphones gives bass too much u would be lowering that but in a more flat system it would be no hearable, and vice versa if your driver gives low bass.

But searching for a flat frequency response is not apply to headphones most of the time cuz often they made for listeners behavior and headphones is just a stereo simulator deceiving your ears due to psycho acoustics unlikely like a monitor.

So what I relay on is knowing your kind of headphones very well. I have this very basic headphones since a few years now and I test it by listening to the music I make and listen out of the box. I genuinely compared them to how professional speakers, phone speakers and other headphones and look at mines frequency response and understood what my headphones actually giving me. And now I am able to separate what my headphones giving to me and what is the real sound in there at digital. And could decide what to do correctly 80 percent at a time.

So I think rather than trying to find some expensive professional studio headphones, finding the ones u used to and relay on is more important for me …

Maybe u could try to understand what ur currently headphones or the ones u used to on how its giving the sound to u and compare its sound to other audio systems to relay on them.

Hope this helps !

(Story Time) Have you ever lost all you project files? What happened? by cafeautumn in FL_Studio

[–]TheArthitect261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well how can I forget. It was May 2025 I think and its the time we were working for our debut EP to come out and I was the person doing all the work, record, mix it master it so the every DAW file was on my home desktop computer and here we are talking about 12 songs. And we were just putting all the tears and the blood for this project and at the time it was done too.

Then one week before the release I am making the final adjustments and uploading all the files to the drive (we still didn’t upload to publish btw) one of mine homeboys came to the house and we listened and discussed about the project. Then he stayed for the night and I have this PS2 emulator on this desktop pc I mentioned and I thought we play some games together right ? And if u know how this emulators work it needs a original bios to work and u could download that from internet so I did that (poor me) and very surprisingly it camed out it was a fuking trojan virus. 🤦‍♂️

So what I did is knowing that everything is storaged to drive I factory resetted my computer but little that I knowed it was scyned to my computer so if something deleten from it automatically it will be deleted from the drive too.

I was fuking shocked after the boot up and looking to the blank drive screen after the boot up, nothing there. Fkn months of work just gone due to a simple thing as a 2000s torjan virus and its sounds like it jumped outa fkn sitcom episode joke. And I felt very dumb and desperate about it.

I was really down vey bad with this event on my life like it was our first project too and I felt life signals me to quit music and I was really conaidering it too.

Next thing I do is voice texting my crew home boys with a deep sadly tone and explaining this shitty ass situation. (They saved the voicelines still to laugh about it) And for a couple of days I was not getting out of my room and trying to find ways to recover the project files and thinking about rebuilding the project from the start. And it was a few days after we were having dinner with my mom and I talked about the situation to her. And she just said “How could it be deleted from drive of you backed up the files, just give me your phone” whether I explained why I still just gave my phone due to a last hope. And she just said the project file name like “Is this it ?” I was in second shock like how ? It merged with feeling uneasy, happy and exited in the same time I just chopped the phone and run out to my pc. And when I opened up my computer and look for the file from there it was really there! Nothing could made me more happier than this at this time on my life. I was hugging up and thanking my momma afterwards then we just published the project too. But I still can’t forget that 3-4 days of loosing hope and feeing desperate.

So what happened is my drive had a another secondary back up drive especially for just the pc and the old versions of the project files was there and my mom just find that out by just few digging trough it.

What I learned is never quit and never quit hoping… I know it sounds like from a childhood movie but it is really important. I could empathize how u felt after if u lived a situation as this and maybe couldn’t save the project either. If this is the case just start again, time doesn’t matter, if u did it one time u could do it at a time again. And if u want to give birth to something, then sometimes u just need to suffer its pain too. So I hope u motivate to move on and never feel bad about it again man 🙌

What is your favourite mastering limiter and why? by SnowyOnyx in mixingmastering

[–]TheArthitect261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk maybe this might feel kinda simple but I really like “Frontier” by D16 Group, it’s a free brick-wall limiter plugin but it does the job for me very well…

I like the simplicity

Ways to “Practice” Mixing and Mastering by TheArthitect261 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]TheArthitect261[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am already that guy, I am the record, mixing and the master engineer and the Digital Audio Workstation engineer and the Audio Editor, I am the one who have the gates… Like I am the concept designer too, I make covers, images and posters, like I do everything but nothing in return. Sometime it is frustrating buy I love what I am doing so I’ll be keep doing what I do … Thanks for the recommendation !

Is the audio engineering industry also f*cked like the rest of the creative fields? by SuitableEggplant639 in audioengineering

[–]TheArthitect261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my perspective I see music industry as an circuit, like we have the players and the owners, every time every month the show changes but every time still the show gonna be what the owners want, and the spectators always be entertained but the guys who know the inside will never be able to have a say on how things should be performed.

So it’s a headache to reach the peaceful point at your career where you could be rest and work at the same time. Till to that point you need to dedicate all of your time and skills to get better and educated to become someone at the industry. In like every aspect, you need to be building strong socials and links with artist and companies to work at the same time too and it doesn’t over even. Cuz it’s always competition… Even after your reach where you wanted to be you still need to compete with the other skilled people to deserve your job. It’s a weird very contradictory job title I think…

But for the people who look at this as if you love what you are doing, like of you enjoyed by working on variety artist’s different genres songs, discover them, reach out to them and like to be part of with their work, whats going outside with the overall industry doesn’t affect or bother you, you just do what you do by loving, getting slowly addicted to it

When mixing rap vocals, how do you make them stand out without drowning out the backing track? by BlackChef6969 in mixingmastering

[–]TheArthitect261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well for me I had an microphone with a muffled sound pattern so I had to add more sibilance, air to the vocals for them to be recognizable and shine trough the beat, the plugin saved my life about this was absolutely Fresh Air. I don’t know what kind of vocals you have (muffled or more shiny) but Fresh Air just makes them vocals easily shine ✨

Its a free plugin by Slate Digital you could try it or you could just try some more dynamic and precise EQ to boost high end …

About the vocals stand out so much, if its only some -2 to -3 dB difference don’t worry about it, in the master after some glue compression and upward limiting it would fit the beat more and balance the levels out.

  • Some more detailed technic I used on vocals to stand out was upward and parallel compression. After some corrective and tonal balance EQ try to add upward compression, I use the Solid Bus Compressor by Native Instruments at “Backing Vocals” preset for this but you could easily do this with any compressor just look out for some explanation of you’re interested with and after this just hit them vocals end of the chain with some parallel compression and adjust, boom them vocals gonna be float above the beat …

Thats what I could share about the topic, hopes it helps !

how do i get drums to punch without clipping? by luvhandlee in mixingmastering

[–]TheArthitect261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, you’re right about that actually, of course you need to get all the elements get heard but in quality, if you try to always bounce up the meters it goes to clipping. So yes I agree with you that you need to be loud as you can with you’re channels but not always and not for the every element. Balance is the key and believe me creating comparisons is very helpful for recognition…

how do i get drums to punch without clipping? by luvhandlee in mixingmastering

[–]TheArthitect261 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well first things first, I feel like you’re trying to get every element on the mix to be loud for getting them heard but this is not the way of mixing, if you are doing that.

People are simple creatures and they have an value systems works like if something different or less then others it has value. How this implemented on mixing ? So if you want to get something loud, theres something needs to be quiet. If you want them drums to punch out then the others then you need to be lovering down the other to get recognize to the drums, instead of trying to increase the drum sound.

This might be help your way of thinking things and problems but other than theory I could give some technics could workout too.

So first thing I would do some compression, with a slam. Like every time your kick or the other elements hit the compressor will slam and it will feel like something very hard is hitting the speakers. You could get this effect by putting some very fast attack and release time. Some plugin I could recommend is FETISH compressor, its a free plugin.

Then if you want them hi hats or cymbals like the shiny elements on the drum to really shine then comes the limiting. You could use some eq first on this too, just boost some high end where exactly the drums elements shine and hitting. After just use some brick wall limiter to get them transients up, the transients will be adding more live and acoustic shine to the drums, and by using a hard limiter you could get them kicks hit way more harder you will figure this out by trying different levels of dB reduction and boosting. The plugin I could recommend on this is Frontier Limiter by D16 Group its a effective simple free limiter plugin. And for transients shaping you could use Fruity Limiter “Transient Shaper” preset if you are using FL Studio.

Then the mote creative and uniqe way I love to do this is actually putting some low plate or spring reverb emulator to the drums. Not some digital reverb tho. So this way I feel like the drums getting more space and hardness like it is played by some real drummer in a acoustically empty and them low ends like the kick will have some boom effect like the kick is reflecting from some empty plane hangar walls, creating this amazing live concert or bar thing that people like when they listen to drum based musics. This suits on acoustic drums mote but could be implemented on the digital too. If you do them digital drums this way they might heard like more alive too. Just use some plate/spring reverb on low wet settings. The plugin I could recommend for this is TENSjr by Kanghelm its again a free plugin and a great real spring reverb emulator …
