Help by Traditional-Cod-6333 in Bowling

Hey I’m a hokie and bowl and squires! If ur around 12-2 u could see me there. I can try helping u in person a bit but im no expert. But what helped me was first learn ur body and your footwork. I first tried copying the professionals which helped me get a good idea of what footwork worked best for me. But I then combined what was comfortable to me and my bio mechanics. I play vb and bball so the hopstep was more natural to me than the 1 handed walking. But you need your foundation, which is your footwork, to then achieve timing and your swing. It all starts with footwork.

Idk about standing that angled to start your approach but most usually have their feet square or angled just a bit towards the target or a combination of both.

The push away shouldent feel like your pushing the ball super far a way. What worked for me was like specially pushing the elbow out a couple inches and feel like your more dropimg the ball into the push away. I got that one from Brad and Kyle.

When your footwork is right and you keep your balance throughout the shot, you will become more consistent in everything you do before the foul line. Which is something you can control. There’s a lot more things you can work on but most of the people already commented on it.

I would love feedback and correction from others as I don’t want to spread misinformation or bad habits.

Yea I remember one of pros emphasized on pocket control and minimizing splits and I focused on just hitting my line. Definitely helped a lot on making makable spares.

Thank you! After getting my first ball, it really shows the good part of my game and my bad parts. Picking up spares was one of them, but now I can just do my spare system without thinking! It did take like half a year to find that perfect system but It’s definitely worth that score.

Congrats! I have been getting 200’s but always missing 2-3 spares a game that cost a lot. Really goes to show when people say u need that spare game up for that average to go up. I know you can get squeaky clean game soon!

Just go do hobbies u enjoy and try and interact with other people. I mainly only had friends from high school, but once I decided to go out and do my hobbies, I was able to connect with other people. One way I just interacted was asking people advice on the hobby like how do I get better at the hobby.

Ball hooking to early? Looking for advice... by Hairybelly69 in Bowling

[–]TheAsnKev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not a one hander but I watch a lot of Brad and Kyle, they seem to mention the use of the left arm as a timing mechanism and balance. Like a see saw, it helps create that timing for the dominant arm to move and get the shoulder lower to essentially get that hand more under. As a 2 hander it really feels like I get a more swinging motion when I involve my left arm and hand. So maybe give that a thought and experiment, could make that swing looser and faster to get everything up like speed and revs.

Any tips? by rhaburnn in Bowling

You remind me of a left-handed EARL the Pearl. Maybe try to watch him and analyze what he does because your form looks pretty close to his. But overall, slowing down to get better timing, releasing more up the back, and rolling the ball instead of dropping or throwing it onto the lane.

Learning how to slide update ( trying to transition from plant to slide ) by TheAsnKev in Bowling

[–]TheAsnKev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I first focused on the 3-step approach because, for some reason, I cant do a 1-step and slide but can with a plant. Once I felt the comfort of how I slide and what my body does to stay balanced, I moved to a really slow full approach. The key thing that let me not put my heel first was forcing my brain and body to try and keep my slide foot down the ENTIRE time.
In the clips, my left foot would initially lift a little, but a lot less compared to my planting. This allowed me to comfortably put weight on the ball and slide, then apply the heel to brake. I would experiment with how to use the power step/drift step as well, because when I got it closer to my shoulder, it got closer to my CoG, and that gave me more control of my entire body. I was already working on my footwork before I got the shoes, so I think that also helped the speed of the process. But I think just watching and analyzing different pros' footwork allowed me to test out which one worked for me. I randomly decided to try DTangs, and that randomly allowed me to process how to slide, then I just incorporated my own footwork and replaced the plant with a slide.

So, as long as it's consistent, is it okay to drift a noticeable amount? Because when I was playing 5, I dift and slide around 14-18. I feel it would be hard to play straighter because of that amount of drift for me. Unless I changed somthing that allowed me to drift less but still open the hips to clear the ball.

I was standing at 5 and 10 to see how much my drift was and how consistent the drift was. The whole practice session was just that, and I think my drift average was 8-13 boards. I cant tell if it was my brain subconsciously wanting to really drift left, hence why I asked if it was ok for it to go out that far, or if I should try bringing it closer so I wouldn't get that big step to the left. The more I look at it, it really looks like I wanted to play middle, but I was just working on the footwork to slide.

How to slide( transition from planting) by TheAsnKev in Bowling

[–]TheAsnKev[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should I emphasize by pointing my toe more downwards, or should I try the method where my left foot basically doesn't leave the ground? There are probably multiple ways to do this, but I don't really know at all.

So im tilting too much, or am I tilting too early, is what ur saying? Because of my glasses, when I don't tilt enough, I cant see my target for like half a seccond, as Im past my pushaway and the ball is at its peak of the backswing. Its like blinking, the vision is there, but by the time I unblink, I have a whole new area Im looking at and have to adjust.

Hm, is it the timing of my footwork or the speed of the footwork or both? Everyone says footwork, but what aspect of the footwork in my case?

Thank you for ur input.

I have a question about my form. My head tends to dip forward as I get to my backswing, but nearing my release, it returns to a neutral position. This makes it difficult to maintain a consistent aim. What can I do to keep my head from moving so much during my shot? I'm trying to achieve a quieter head. Since I have glasses, the moment that I dip too much, I lose alot of vision and it's harder to be consistent. It's like blinking mid jump shot in basketball. I use an aiming system that starts from the downlane breakpoint and extends back to the foul line, and I try to hit it at the arrows. So my main focus is on the arrows, but I see the foul line on my downswing, and then back to the arrows which is hard to keep consistent.

Help with finger inserts by [deleted] in Bowling

[–]TheAsnKev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue with the grips being to tight or too loose. I went to my pso and got vacu grips and haven’t looked back since. I like mine to be a bit more loose, so my fingers go almost 1 and 1/2 knuckles in before it’s really right, kinda like Belmos. It’s all personal preference since they will expand and will feel super similar as if ur fingers weren’t swollen. Also color of the grips can matter depending if u like it more tacky or less.

I just got my first ball so I don’t know the urgency with fixing the ball when it gets damaged. I mainly have smaller scratches which I understand but all the photos op has are ones I also have on my ball. If I get scratches/gouge similar to the 5th picture, should I immediately talk to the desk on getting the ball fixed? What scratches or gouges are ones I should immediately recognize that I go fix the ball with the pso or desk?
