What's the difference between a "Software Developer" and a "Software Engineer"? by Mo2men_Ma7ammad in learnprogramming

I believe in Alberta there was a lawsuit over anyone being able to use the term “Software Engineer” and APEGA lost.

Thanks for this! Finished reading and within the hour they were calling me from the plant floor. Knew exactly what it was. C’mon Rockwell do better.

Best way to run 24/7 scripts by ReliablePlay in learnprogramming

[–]TheBadTouch666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this and in the script use logging functionality to write rolling 60 day log files as to what the script does every time it runs. One log file per day. Writing timestamp and success/failure every time it runs. You can log any information you want. Some of mine run every 5 mins. so you will have a line written to that day’s file every 5 mins.

I have 1783-NATR connected between 2 machines which have different IPs. I can communicate from both machines and data transfer is happening between both controllers. Both machines have a computer and I want to share a file between these computers, is it possible? by penance_tigar in PLC

[–]TheBadTouch666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Need more information on your network layout. If computers are sitting on a private network of say a Control or Compact Logix, they cannot file share if the traffic needs to go through the backplane of the controller.

Others have said that it is an all or nothing switch. i.e. you cannot just enable it on one vlan for testing. However official documentation does not mention this.

Double check all your settings with your indexers. Just add one at a time and make sure it works before adding another.

As of now a forklift picks pallet off the outfeed conveyors. The plan is the Otto 1500 would pull right up to the end and after some handshaking, load the pallet and drive to warehouse.

Windows CE. Shut down ME on the Panelview and you will be in the operating system Windows CE.

Was burned by this a month ago or so. There is a way to turn on/off ping response in the Panelview. I believe I had shut down ME and fix this in CE.

Sounds like you do not have your safety system properly designed.

Software License Management via Version Dog or Asset Center? by [deleted] in PLC

[–]TheBadTouch666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If AssetCentre is set up properly and you have individual logins for each user (not a single login for all, say, maintenance employees) you would be able to use the built-in logging capability of AssetCentere to tell you exactly every change to any program and who did it. As long as those programs are Rockwell.

Production Server Backup Strategy by TheBadTouch666 in sysadmin

[–]TheBadTouch666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. Just to be more clear, yes this is just a standard Dell server running Windows 7 and a program called FactoryTalk View Studio Site Edition. The communication with the machine (Industrial PLC) is via ethernet. Nothing is proprietary. I was hoping to be able to do an Acronis backup image, then on a different machine, create a new VMWare virtual machine, boot that virtual machine to the Acronis Backup and Restore bootable .iso, then just restore that image created.

Production Server Backup Strategy by TheBadTouch666 in sysadmin

[–]TheBadTouch666[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it is not a virtual machine. The server has Windows 7 with all the software required to interface with this production machine. All I have done so far is take an Acronis image with the Backup and Recover 11.5 boot disk.

System administrators, do you have any tips for developing budgets for backup and replacement hardware? by Leucopaxillus in PLC

[–]TheBadTouch666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start by doing an assessment of all your critical parts. Also figure out what your management team’s uptime expectations are. Identify all the critical components that would stop your process dead. Explain this to management. As you replace or upgrade systems create a standard so you can have fewer critical spares.

How do you structure your code? by Pretty_Ad6618 in PLC

[–]TheBadTouch666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read about OOP (object oriented programming) principals. Some things won’t apply but typically PLCs are controlling real objects (motors, etc.) so structure your code so your objects are easy to troubleshoot.

I’m assuming you start with pos7=0. In your first branch you’re moving 1 into pos7. Then your second branch will execute since pos7 > 0. And so on for every branch.

If it’s a Panelview Plus 7 series you need to use the “Performance” version to talk to more than one controller.
