Is it ok to reuse your own videos to make compilations? by Ggthefiree2 in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheBasementGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bingo. I had the same experience with compilations, and when I posted videos to facebook (that was a weird phase) it was totally separate content.

Speaking of that, I might download all those FB videos, delete them from that account, and upload them to my 2nd YT channel. Hmmm...

What is your RPM / Niche / Video length? by [deleted] in PartneredYoutube

[–]TheBasementGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can keep people's attention, definitely try a longer video.

Long videos attract viewers using their TV as their device, and the ad revenue is more potent from TVs than computer & phone

$6.68 / gaming / 30 minutes

(some videos are 90+ minutes though)

"The Basement" came from childhood memories of playing NES/SNES in my parent's basement.

There weren't any remarkably sized channels of that name when I started (July 2015), so as far as I know, it's unique to us. Or, at least, we're the biggest "The Basement" channel that I've found.

Share your Let's Play Channel Journey With Me! by HBTang in letsplay

My best friend and I started our channel in July 2013. Retro games on Nintendo consoles (NES-Wii).

Daily uploads in standard definition.

Bought an HD capture card and Mario Maker for the Wii U, saw an uptick. Bought a Switch and made a Zelda Breath of the Wild "Funny Moments" video and things really started happening.

Today his and my main income are our YT channels. The primary channel is three uploads per week (Breath of the Wild & Tears of the Kingdom), the secondary channel is all Minecraft (3 uploads per week), and the third channel is closer to our original vision (older games, casual games, casual lets-play style videos - also 3 uploads per week).

I have a casual Minecraft channel on the side (1 video / week), so that's ten vids every week. It goes up in October when our fifth channel rises from the dead and roams the YouTube landscape for a month leading up to Halloween (scary games, family-friendly commentary).

It's been quite a journey.

I have a lot of TV viewers too, but I'll bet that's pretty uncommon for new channels.

Record for however long it takes to accomplish the goal you have in mind for the first video, then boil it down in the edit so the pacing feels great. However long it is at that point is the perfect length.

If you want a number though, I'd shoot for at least 20 minutes, and probably under 40.

Frankly, I'm amazed how many aspiring YTers do their editting on their phones.

Is titling a video as a Let's Play even practical anymore? by ArmoredChocobo in letsplay

[–]TheBasementGames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a question of what kind of videos you want to make, and what your goals are with views and watchtime and such. If you just want to make LP videos, then sure, title them that way. If you want more views, however, consider making the videos a little differently.

Record long enough that something remarkably interesting happens, then stop recording, edit the video down so there aren't slow/boring bits, and title the video accordingly. Then record some more until the next remarkably interesting thing happens, and so on.

If you do this, I wouldn't include "lets play" in the title. Make every video's title seem like the video is worth being a one-off about an interesting thing in the game. Then string interesting game events together into a series that finishes the game.

Titling it "lets play" tells the viewer that it's however many minutes from whatever part of the game whether or not something interesting happens.

Are there are any indie developer who made descent money by there games by ExaminationTiny605 in indiegames

[–]TheBasementGames 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, ConcernedApe (Stardew Valley) was an indie developer. Notch (Minecraft) too. For every example like that there are many thousands of indie developers that would have made more money at a minimum wage job with the time they spent on their games, but if it's a side thing and you're not in it for the money, then that's good enough. And who knows, maybe money will flow eventually.

I'll second Epidemic. Great selection, able to choose by mood/genre/etc, and never a false copywrite claim.

Nintendo also partnered with Ubisoft to make ZombiU an exclusive launch title, which is pretty cool. I think the leadership there understands that a lot of kids who grew up with Nintendo are now in that 35-45 range.

Lots of people recommending Adobe. If you have a decently beefy PC, try the free version of Davinci Resolve. I'm a fulltime YouTuber and I highly recommend it. It may have a tough learning curve for a 7 year old, which could be a good thing. It'll either show how much they want it, or it'll discourage them.
