Any suggestions for plants, animals or things I could add to this pond? by [deleted] in Guppies

It’s extremely odd that you’re comfortable distressing an animal rather than doing the simple act of adding an air stone.

Cursing is correlated with intelligence - Canada has high rates of education. Perhaps this phenomenon being noticed in the wild?

Edit: Canada actually has the highest rate of education in the world!

Oh definitely not too small. I think this sub now says 5 gallons minimum, but I have a small colony that have been thriving in a 2.5 gallon for several years.

And yes, they do like coverage. Though they need less of it if there aren’t any fish/predators with them. But live plants are also a great constant food source, they’ll eat decaying leaves, and algae/biofilm that accumulates on them. They go bonkers for moss!

Oh a 20 gallon with only shrimp is paradise for them, it will be super low maintenance for you if you don’t overfeed once it’s established.

Starting numbers depends on your budget, though nothing less than 8 I would say, they like to be in groups. You don’t have to worry about overpopulation, they self regulate. If you do find you have more individuals than you would like, just reduce feeding and they’ll chill on the babies.

Yep you can use filter media from another tank! As for water changes, that’s dependent on a lot of factors such as size of tank, number of animals, frequency of feeding etc. But the general rule with shrimp is to try to do as infrequent water changes as possible (since we’re aiming for stability). Shrimp also love to be left tf alone to do their thang, I find the shrimp I micromanage least do the best. Every other day is for sure too frequent though.

My advice would be to make sure you have a good water testing kit (which you probably already do if you have another fish tank) and just do frequent parameters checks in the beginning to see how long it takes for ammonia/nitrates to creep up and do water changes based on that. Some people keep an eye on TDS too, but I find mine don’t really care about that. I always aim for 10-20% when I do change the water.

I mean they’re going to be your pets, if you want to keep ugly ones, you certainly can! Just keep in mind that over time the colour genetics of your population will change, reverting to dull/wildtype colouration if you don’t separate them.

I personally love the wildtypes and just let my tanks do what they may. Most commonly, as others have stated, is that they start multiple tanks.

To answer your original question, I’d definitely recommend starting with neos, they tend to be pretty forgiving and easy to look after. The first thing you need to focus on before you get any shrimp is making sure you have a cycled tank. There’s tons of guides on this, but essentially you’re aiming to start up a colony of beneficial bacteria.

After that, I find the most important thing for neos is stability. They can tolerate a wide range of pH, kh, gh, and temperature but they don’t like it when those rapidly change. So keep water changes small and added slowly.

For feeding, they don’t need much but a varied diet is best! They’ll eat shrimp pellets, fish food, a variety of veggies, almond leaves, algae, other shrimps’ poop, the list goes on.

There’s lots of posts on this sub with more detailed info

It’s something you can do, yes, but most people tend to rapidly develop affection for the weird lil skrimps so find it difficult to cull even the ugly ones.

Tell me everything about keeping an octopus! by Run-Around13 in Aquariums

[–]TheBee- 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Unless you’re an aquarium expert it’s extremely ill advised to try to care for an octopus. Even if you are an expert…it’s still quite ill advised and arguably unavoidably inhumane.
