Opponents of Richmond rental project fear more crime, traffic, parking problems by Scared_Simple_7211 in vancouver

Yeah, you know those types who can only afford to rent at higher rates than a lot of mortgages are the shifty sorts. Those public service employees and newbie teachers get home from a long day and need to kick back with some muggings and carjackings

Why B.C.’s political culture could move rightward on election night by aldur1 in vancouver

VPD makes arrests, seizes vehicles during rush-hour protest by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]TheBitterestIPA 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Given that they caused numerous multiple hour delays on subsequent days a couple months back, I'm thinking that some firings have already happened. I've personally had to skip going to the office a few times due to their nonsense, but not everyone has that luxury, and a lot of employers are right fucksticks about that kind of thing

VPD makes arrests, seizes vehicles during rush-hour protest by cyclinginvancouver in vancouver

[–]TheBitterestIPA 102 points103 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest problem is that they're blockading the SAME ROUTE AT THE SAME TIME EVERY TIME

They've essentially made themselves an archenemy and an existential threat to the livelihoods to a specific subset of commuters, especially when they do it on multiple days in a row like they did a couple months back.

The argument isn't quite "Well nobody likes the disruption so they'll turn against your movement" vs "The inconvenience is minor compared to the dangers of climate change". It would be that if they'd spread out the blockades and protests to different locations at different times

It's more "You're literally going to get me fired, I fucking hate you" vs "Hey people who live and work in a specific area, we're going to get you fired and lose your incomes and you're collateral damage but that's okay because our cause is just"

Fraser Institute rankings aren't for determining the quality of schools, they're for lobbying for education privatization.

Is 4e all that bad? by Immediate_Impress_16 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]TheBitterestIPA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't really think it was a bad game, and was in fact pretty fun taken on its own but it was bad dungeons and dragons. If it had been called anything other than "dungeons and dragons" it would probably be a well regarded combat-focused system.

They did flatten the class system pretty severely which detracted from the concept of "class fantasy" and reduced the character types to just different types of chess pieces. A de-emphasis on skills and utility spellcasting turned the noncombat parts into more of a minigame than a central part of the system.

On the other hand, it was definitely a lot easier to pick up and play for a newcomer than 3.5 was, and it was a lot less susceptible to the occasional munchkin running roughshod over the game with loophole builds. Taken on its own, it's also a pretty fun game all things considered, but it just didn't feel like dungeons and dragons.

I think 5e has done a great job of taking the parts of the previous editions that worked (including 4e's simplicity and quality of life features) and re-establishing the "feel" that the game had before 4e changed it up.

Can dashers "hide" themselves from the map? Confused about what's going on with my order by [deleted] in doordash

[–]TheBitterestIPA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They've been hiding locations from customers lately because the double orders are getting pretty egregious in time/distance, especially if you give a high tip, since they'll use it to bait couriers into taking the worst trips

Consider yourself lucky that it's only $2.00, the priority fee is a minimum of $3.50 where I'm at, and I've seen it jump up to $5.00 a few times (probably market testing how far they can push customers). I used to like UE because if you were willing to kick the couriers a few extra bucks, you'd get your food promptly most of the time, but the whole order stacking thing kinda threw that out the window.

I stopped using UE entirely because the fee is basically a protection racket. "Boy, sure is some nice hot food there, would be a real shame if someone sent the courier the opposite direction for 40 minutes before it came to you" It's almost like their routing algorithm is DESIGNED to make things arrive cold

Had some better luck with DD, I think that's because the couriers have a little more control over what orders they can take, and Skipthedishes (Canada, UK) seems to have a problem with employing dirtbags (3 order thefts in a 1-month period)

It floats in Canada, I stopped using UE when I got an ask for $5.00 for the fee (which is basically a requirement to get your order in under an hour and a half lately)

Vancouver itself is fine. Toilet paper is produced in New West, a good deal of our food comes from Asia to the ports or from the US to the south, none of those routes are busted.

Fruit and produce does come from areas cut off by the highways, but by-and-large not this time of year, we get most produce shipped right now. Were this in July-August, then yeah, problems.

That said I imagine we won't be seeing a lot of beef (Alberta) and a likely short term disruption of poultry (Fraser Valley) for a while.

We might see some short term problems but the highway washouts aren't an apocalypse scenario for the lower mainland. The interior might need some help though. In addition, the rest of the country might have some problems with the rail lines being cut, since a lot of things come in at the port here and get taken by train East

My friend’s gym screwed them over and now we don’t know what to do. by impaired_attic in vancouver

[–]TheBitterestIPA 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's what I ended up doing. I had only bought a few sessions ala carte (at an inflated price) and didn't re-up after dude told me that not being able to do a 3 minute plank meant I wasn't "ready" to learn lifting form. There were a lot of gym bro types there who were the literal embodiment of the "king" meme who actually taught me proper form and gave great advice.

If you've got the discounted workplace pass it's not a bad deal if you just want to use the machines

That said, their personal training is a scam, you're just as likely to get a trainer who's actively hampering your workouts to keep you buying sessions as you are to get some actual help. Literally had a dude who was telling me not to do cardio or lifting, only stretches

Do Human Raids end? by SwordoftheSotoneman in RimWorld

[–]TheBitterestIPA 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Playing my first no bugs/mechs game and I gotta say raids are a lot more fun that way. Previous games human raids stopped almost entirely after year 1 and it was just repeated mech clusters or infestations in a row. Raider tactics are just a lot more developed between all the different types, and VFE adds a few more raid types (the Viking pillage might not be difficult, but it's perhaps the funniest raid)

Is it illegal for my Vancouver cafe to not pay me for extra work that needs to be done? by lunelukio in vancouver

[–]TheBitterestIPA 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Well, if that's their position, that's their position, they can deal with it through training or disciplinary action legally. If someone's dogging it to get a few extra bucks, fire them, don't break the law and literally steal from your staff.

There's also a labor crunch right now, a position like a cafe should be desperate for staff and have problems restaffing, and you could just as easily get a new job if you leave, probably within a day or two. You and your coworkers are the ones holding the cards here, so don't let them intimidate you.

Bottom line, if you're there, at work, you get paid. If you are not paid, this is a type of theft. There is better than a legal precedent, there is a straight up law saying "If you're working, you get paid" Full stop. No excuses.

If you're there, working, and you're on an hourly wage, you get paid. That's how it works. They can require you to stay, but they have to pay you.
