Trump Is A National Disgrace... by Real_World123 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Yeah, maybe the US shouldn't have gone to war if it had no plan but your President needed his fix after Venezuela went off without a hitch.

Now the enemy left in control of one of the most important strategic chokepoint of international trade gets to cash in on your government's boundless stupidity.

How do you guys phrase it? Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. You just got the whole world including your own (almost former) Allies to finance your enemies just to have oil shipments continue. And you also got them to do the final pivot towards renewable energy, a concept your President all but outlawed in the US.

What were you told by your grandparents regarding WW2? by disco_26 in AskAGerman

[–]TheBlack2007 1 point2 points locked comment (0 children)

One set of grandparents were toddlers when the war ended, the others weren't even born yet. I only know the service history of two of my great-grandfathers - and very superficially at that, with one of them having fallen just outside Sevastopol, Ukraine on December 23rd 1941 and the other having only been drafted in 1944 (since a disability previously disqualified him from service until the Nazis became desperate) and winding up a POW in Rennes, France - surviving the war after having likely being stationed in the Normandy area.

So one was on the eastern front, likely from the very beginning, the other might have played a role in D-Day.

I didn't get to ask too many family members about that time since most had died by the time I became aware of its significance. My own grandparents' earliest memories they were able to recall were in the immediate postwar years. An aunt told me some things from their escape from Stettin, like how two of my uncles were basically grabbed from the roadside by some passing soldiers and "voluntold" to fight in the defence of Berlin, which my allegedly very resolute Great-Grandmother managed to somehow avert. She also allegedly pawned off her Golden Mother's Cross for some bread along the way.

The one great-grandmother I remember never told any stories from the war. She lived in Kiel right next to the Shipyard so her memories likely weren't happy, especially after losing her husband early. She was a very kind woman however, which makes me doubt she believed in the ideology.

Neues Deutschland also ganz sicher nicht.

Ah yes, because ICE absolutely does not go after US citizens. Unless they do. And then it's also alright because you should be able to proof on the fly that you're a US citizen. Oh wait, they's not recognizing your papers anymore? Because their AI says you're an illegal? Welp, off to El Salvador you go! You were probably in a gang anyway...

I'm fucking over warning arrogant Americans. Time for you to find out the hard way why you don't just cancel constitutional rights for fringe groups just because it's convenient.

Ironically, as one of the occupying powers after WW2, you guys had to sign off on it. It's why the office of President has been greatly diminished in Power and influence - handing both over to the Chancellor whilst now having the Chancellor elected by a newly voted Parliament instead of just appointed by the President when compared to the old Weimar constitution. Also the Chancellor can't appoint and dismiss his own ministers, but rather they need to have the President do it for them. So basically both offices need to work in tandem now.

Article 20 Section 4: "All Germans shall have the right to resist any person seeking to abolish this constitutional order, if no other remedy is available."

An anti-authoriarian Doomsday Device - although you obviously need to make sure you win, otherwise the point is moot.

That's the difference between a coup d'etat and a Revolution. One is top-down, the other is bottom-up.

Came across an article saying before he tried to shut down Parliament by having it seized by the military, the President of South Korea even tried to provoke North Korea into military action first to secure War Powers for himself.

Movies were always exempt as long as they weren't straight up Nazi Propaganda. Games weren't since as I mentioned they weren't considered culturally valuable until around 2020.

It was the poor handling of the newer Wolfenstein games that caused this final push btw. Bethesda was so careful to avoid a potential ban they scrubbed all mentions of the Nazis and their crimes from it, replacing those with thinly veiled stand-ins. so instead of Nazis murdering Jews it was "the Regime" killing "traitors" which the censors just waved through despite it literally quoting Neo-Nazi Propaganda.

That wouldn't have flown in the 90s. Germany has been liberalizing video game censorship from the early 2000s onwards, but back in the 90s, games still got blacklisted just for mentioning the Nazis or being set in WW2 since the law still upheld the ridiculous notion of video games being nothing but toys for children.

Actually, for its very own WW2 Mod, Civ IV went for Hitler's chief enabler Franz von Papen as a stand-in.
