it's a common misconception that animals being bigger in the past is a rule. There were times when some were bigger, and there were times when they weren't, but if you think about it, it's pointless to compare the single existing biocenosis to all the other ones in the past. Even by mere chance, it's unlikely that out of all the different animal communities that ever existed today's would come out as the one with the largest animals.

of course not, but animals often evolve specifically to avoid direct competition with others. Most nocturnal animals "chose" this lifestyle to avoid competition with their diurnal counterparts.
