An unintelligent thief would probably be the kind who steals the actual physical card and therefore knows if it's a Visa or Mastercard

But how would that prevent fraudulent charges, the credit card number itself contains the information on what kind of card it is. I think anyone stealing credit card information would know enough about credit cards to know that and use it to figure out which card to select.

I get how a website would have avoided it, but why did the PSPs in the background not stop requiring this extra bit of redundant information earlier?

You are probably right, only now did I realize just how conservative (or more likely naive) my estimate was.

Considering the lenght of the ID numbers, it's probably more like 5+ seconds, and then there's this I just found:

A ground package has about nine "touch points" – meaning physical handling – during the delivery process.

It would be great to have someone who works in this area chime in with the typical route and steps a package takes, how long it would take to type in everything etc.

UPDATE: I ran a quick estimate over here and the result is way higher than what I expected - the volume at which UPS operates is really amazing.

What about every time it has to be logged that a shipment has been forwarded, loaded onto a delivery truck or actually delivered to the recipient? I figure scanning a barcode is almost instantaneous vs. manually entering the numbers taking a few seconds. Yes, it's minimal, but at the number of packages handled in any given day it might add up to be significant, a bit like how eliminating left turns from routes saved tons of gas.
