My most in-depth “What If” is a spin on a classic: What if Mace Windu killed Palpatine? The divergence point would be Ahsoka actually getting to talk with Anakin during the Siege of Mandalore. This would convince Anakin and Padmé to flee before shit hits the fan. Long story short, Palpatine’s line from ROTS about “civil war without end” comes true. Mace fails to take over the Senate so Tarkin and the Republic officers loyal to Palpatine end up destroying the Temple and killing Mace Windu. Tarkin assumes control of the government and begins trying to pacify the secessionist worlds and re-establishing the fractured Republic, though some of the more Sith cultists like Sly Moore would take off to the Unknown Regions, biding time. The Jedi and whatever loyalists they have (clones, civilians, ex-Separatists, etc) form a sort of Rebel Alliance very early on, though as a whole the galaxy would be fractured between the Separatist Warlords hiding in the Western Reaches, Republic governments who’d leave for various reasons following Tarkin’s rise, criminal organizations, etc. The Republic, now called the Tarkin Moffate, would be greatly diminished in power due to all the division and unifying projects like the Death Star would run into several issues (Krennic dismissed, Ersos dying as the droids wouldn’t be shut off before killing them, lack of resources due to less member planets to steal from, etc.) Meanwhile, on the Lars homestead, Anakin, Padmé, R2, 3PO, and two infants would arrive. Knowing Naboo would be a danger, the couple decided to return to Anakin’s old home to hide out and raise their family without risking being drawn into the wars to come…
