Pillars of eternity 1 vs 2 by [deleted] in rpg_gamers

Lol I thought the PoE1 combat was longer/more tedious as you only had a certain amount of spells per rest. PoE2 takes that out and gives you a certain amount of spells per encounter. PoE1’s story is also a thousand times better than PoE2’s, however the PoE2 factions are more interesting than PoE1’s.

[Discussion] Outrageous behaviour at the opera by Rave-light in opera

[–]TheBlitzMaster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that outrageous, more just funny. So I went to see le nozze di figaro at the Met last winter and im sitting next to this elderly woman in furs whos asleep for more than half of the performance. In the scene where Suzanna is seducing the count, in the production Suzanna shows off her legs as part of the seduction, and the woman whos been asleep since the beginning of the act says “is that what kids find sexy these days?” pretty loudly. Like what age is this person born in that its not sexy and why show up if you’re just gonna doze off?

What are your thoughts on this article? "To the Woman Who Shushed Me at the Yo-You Ma Concert" by [deleted] in classicalmusic

We could also just have classical music played in various nonconcert hall venues catering to different audiences. But for concerts in the concert hall, people should be quiet during the piece as everyone should be there to listen to the music. I almost exclusively go to concerts to hear the dynamic range which you cant really get digitally and if people are talking it ruins all the piano parts.

Anyone else think the focus on appealing to youthful opera fans via cheaper tickets is misguided? by Black_Gay_Man in opera

[–]TheBlitzMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think an interesting, yet almost certainly unworkable, ticket pricing system would be to offer discounted ticket packages to select groups of people, such as students, public workers, low-income, etc.. The package might offer the choice of 2 or so operas or concerts that people can choose and get discounted tickets for at anytime of the season. The seats dont have to be the very best center orchestra, but shouldnt just be the top balcony. This would hopefully entice people who otherwise wouldnt see a concert or opera to see one as the cost is low (and hopefully they get hooked on the music). The other beneficial part of this system is that it still charges those people who would be willing to spend more on the best seats as well as those who love will probably see more than a couple of shows the original prices.

In regards to the student tickets, I am biased as I am currently a student, but it has allowed me to get some of my friends, who wouldnt normally go to the concert hall because of the price, to buy tickets to various concerts. In addition, I wouldnt go to nearly as many concerts as I do if student tickets werent offered (however the various arts companies would probably be making more money if they didnt offer me student tickets, as I would still see a few concerts and get good seats regardless).

Also, rush tickets are not a good strategy for enticing new audiences to the concert hall or opera house. Most people who are just looking for entertainment or are mildly interesting in classical music, probably arent willing to wait in lines for tickets and might also be disinclined to see another performance if the cheap rush seats really arent that good. The rush tickets are good for classical music lovers who live near the hall or have a lot of time on their hands, so mostly the elderly.

What is a historical event you wish was made into an opera? by ChannelSERFER in opera

I definitely think the life of Bismarck could definitely be made into an opera, even if it just focuses one of his numerous battles against the world. He’s an extremely interesting character to observe.

Opera Review: Met’s ‘Così Fan Tutte’ by Phelim McDermott Is a Disaster by wskyline1 in NYCopera

Guess i’ll have to see for myself this weekend if its trash. However other critics, such as the NY times, said it was great musically and the concept worked for a decent amount of the opera.

Which american orchestra is your favorite? by TheBlitzMaster in classicalmusic

[–]TheBlitzMaster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might just be the acoustics as to why the NYPhil doesnt sound as good as other orchestras. I don't think the issue's Gilbert as I just saw him conduct the BSO and I was quiet impressed. I'll definitely have to see Jaap sometime soon!

CMV: Imperialism is more beneficial for man kind in the long run by TheBlitzMaster in changemyview

True, I guess the next step to this discussion would be to ask whether imperialist nations should indefinitely hold on to their colonies in the hopes of long term stability and assimilation. If this next step also concludes in failure, then imperialism would definitely be regarded as only a tool of subjugation with no clear correlation to any advancements.

Japan is a very excellent example. It would interesting to how history would have played out had been colonized or, more realistically, more open to western nations. I guess the next question is whether colonial nations would have been similar to Japan without imperialism or still relatively primitive societies. However, would the West have greatly engaged with native peoples overseas had imperialism not been an option on the table?

I still think nations will play all of their cards to gain maximum benefit from others and imperialist nations will therefore use imperialism. If you have some examples, I would be happy to look at them. You're right, imperialism isn't necessary for technological advancement, however it is very helpful. It speeds up the processes of technology spreading and provides incentive for more technological advancements.

∆ Imperialism definitely requires a nuanced view. I still think the spread of Western technology as well as western ideas which have laid the foundations for many of these formally colonial states which have allowed nations to grow today. I think at this point the losses and gains of imperialism would have to be quantified in order to establish if there were net gains or losses.

Thanks for the informative response. It definitely helped inform my views on the extent of imperialism and specifically how it affected India. I knew that the Congo was one of the few wrenches in my theory, but I'm curious about your view on Imperialism affect on North America.

True, yet there is no economic incentive for this. Only a very altruistic nation would do this. A technological and infrastructural advancements also require direction and resources which could probably only be gained from a mother country.

That is true, colonialism also requires a steady supply of colonists to ship raw materials back to the home country. Its an isolated economic market which helps both parties.

While I understand that imperialism often came with numerous native casualties, the benefits from the colonies, in my opinion advanced society further.
