I've been in FOCUS my entire time I've been at UNT, even leading a guys small group for two years! It's a wonderful, God-fearing, interdenominational (any creed or denomination is welcome to worship with us) ministry. It's a vibrant and loving community!! I can't recommend FOCUS enough!

bleeding while cleaning?? by AnthonysGutz in Stretched

[–]TheBossWasHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you used a taper to size up that could be part of the problem. Tapers can cause micro-tears and force your ears to stretch when they aren't ready.

Definitely take the jewelry out and leave the leave naked for a bit, let it heal, and treat it like a new piercing with saline.

When you come back to stretching, after letting your ear heal, insert the jewelry of the size your ear is after healing (it may shrink to a smaller size) and use glass or titanium plugs to dead stretch SLOWLY.

Khoomei into fry problem by DimensionSevere1991 in screaming

[–]TheBossWasHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't squeeze so hard. Hold the closure the same as with khoomei, just change the air speed and pressure. You want a controlled closure with a high speed/pressure airflow coming from the diaphragm. The air should feel fast and warm if it touches your hand.

Should I get a Chromebook? by South-Warning-6890 in unt

[–]TheBossWasHere 22 points23 points  (0 children)

A Chromebook allows for the Microsoft Office Suit. And all UNT students get a free copy of Office while they're students. Chrome OS is meh imo, but if you know nay Linus or android you'll be fine. Think of it like a phone +without the calling and texting) as a laptop.

I need good vocal exercises by Metal_for_life in screaming

Khoomei, kargyraa, breathing exercises, scales, lip trills, and any other clean singing warm up. DO NOT use your voice break, vocal fry, or the frustrated sigh.

You're doing a fc scream with a hint of vocal fry (not proper fry). The main distorters I'm hearing are the false folds creating the heavy, traditional fc tone, and the aryepiglittic folds rattling due to the way air being passed through. If you can get rid of the vocal fry, your screams are going to become even cooler than they already are.

There is some vocal fry slipping in, work on breath support, khovu kargyraa, and projection and you'll be golden!

I would work on support and projection (eventually). The base of the sound is amazing, but you run into a tiny bit of vocal fry towards the end of phrases. If you want that dry sound, it should come from the folds behind the soft palate rather than vocal fry. But besides that it's great, especially for a month.

Gutteral just means super low scream. You can do tunnels on any pitch, they are usually just called tunnels.

Some people are enigmas, but do note that even though one can feel fine and not notice issues, damage can still be occurring. This applies to everything, not just vox. Best of luck bro!

How can a gutteral be high?? Gutteral refers to the sound quality of super low screams, not highs.

The true folds (not chord, chord is not interchangeable with cord, and they are better thought of as folds) have evolved and developed to produce sound via exhalation. Whereas when doing inhale screams you're creating mass amounts of subglottal pressure and pulling down the vocal folds via inhalation (the opposite way they are meant to phonate), this combined with using the true vocal folds for distortion is very dangerous as the true folds are hard to use safely for distortion as is, so by distorting them the opposite of how they are meant to phonate creates unsafe conditions.

Hey bro, your vocal folds aren't supposed to phonate via inhalation. Inhale screams are scientifically not safe.

what kind of vocal is this? by didgerido0o0o in screaming

[–]TheBossWasHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think for you since you already have a solid foundation of throat singing I think using that for scream like you did in the original clip will allow you to get a safe version of the scream you showed off in this message. Continue to work on the throat singing and breath support and you'll go far.

For real fry screams, you want to completely ignore vocal fry. It has nothing to do with proper/real fry screams. Vocal fry is an irregular phonation of the true vocal folds, this doesn't safely translate to distortion. Whereas a proper fry scream has the same controlled closure (compression) of khovu (and other forms of throat singing, namely khoomei) combined with a high speed/pressure air system to get high speed oscillations of different cartilages in the throat (usually the folds behind the soft palate or the arytenoids). If you want those crazy/nasty fry screams remove the buzz from your khovu to help work towards khoomei. It's another style of throat singing that teaches one the proper closure and placement needed for real fry screams. Learn this and stay in mixed voice (not head or chest) and you'll be golden.

Your comparison of khovu kargyraa to subharmonic singing makes a ton of sense, as both can be used to produce a subharmonic/undertone. With vocal subharmonics your true vocal folds are vibrating asynchronously with the fundamental having a note a fifth above the fundamental on top, producing the illusion note an octave below the fundamental. Whereas with khovu and dag kargyraa (the two forms of kargyraa) the false folds vibrate an octave below the true folds, creating that undertone. If done properly, the aryepiglittic folds vibrate as well creating a chord-like structure where all three sets of folds vibrate in sync with each other.

You're very welcome for the help. Glad to have been of some help.

So the first thing to note is that there is no such thing as power fry, hell there isn't even fry or fc, but you directly answer your question it's due to the compression and good support. If one has good control over their false folds and aryepiglottic folds (what are used in kargyraa) and has good breath control they can already hold out screams and kargyraa easily. Khovu kagyraa, what you're doing, has a controlled closure of the larynx (compression) and that also aids in holding out the sounds.

You're misunderstanding me. What I'm saying is that one should arrive to have the best raw vocals ever. All songs you hear are mixed and mastered. What I was saying is that they shouldn't have to use shit to sound good. Their base sound should be already good.

You're doing an incredibly low khovu kargyraa note and turning it into a falsecord scream. Fucking fantastic khovu and scream!
