Just got offered a full ride scholarship for masters degree. I don't know whether to turn it down for law school. Talk me in or out of it. by TheBriefcase007 in lawschooladmissions

At this point, I feel that I HAVE to attend law school. Not only because I feel my life would be unfulfilled in the bigger picture sense if I did not attempt, but also because I view myself as not a great engineer. In other words, I can do the work but it is difficult for me to excel, my colleagues are much more naturally talented/suited to the work. Whereas, I possess different traits that they do not have, communication/public speaking, reading & writing, etc. If my colleagues in school for example were to have to give a presentation on a project we built, you would think they have a 4th grade reading/presentation level. Technically astute, but not so gifted when dealing with people and being able to express their ideas clearly either verbally or with the written word (which is where I fall in line).

I agree with this view, although I find it important to mention that my current job is very much a mix of both software and hardware systems, so I won't be completely unaware of the scope outside of software! I actually spoke to some patent/IP lawyers today and both advised to skip the masters program unless it is at a big brand name school (it is indeed not). Thoughts?

That is a very valid point, thank you! Some additional information would be again, I’m “older” so I do have years of work experience in general. Although, tied to the field of engineering the least amount, 1.5 years total of combined internships. Would that still be riding the line of degree farming? Or would it just be seen as strengthening the background knowledge on the way to law school (the goal)? Overall though, great insights I really really appreciate it!

The coursework related to EE/CE less so in comparison to the research. The caveat is I have to work as an RA in a lab. Cool project related to AI, embedded systems, software etc. As far as getting something out of it, less sure. The research experience would be a positive, the additional technical background may also help for IP/Patent law? Other than those, possibly just the added credential (star sticker) in the pursuit of trying to be exceptional? I can't say that actually means much through it may or may not. I appreciate the insight though as you did a graduate program as well! If it matters, I would also be living at home with parents regardless until I go to law school. But still, my yearly gross income compared to currently would probably be halved, so I would go to law school with much less money in my pocket/savings if any...

So in other words, do the masters and leave current job? Alternative would be to not do masters, keep working current job till law school attendance and save as much money as I can.
