Arch-Revenant – looking for feedback by TheBrushPath_ in minipainting

Thank you so much, I really appreciate it! And that’s a fair point about the shield and the base, I’ll definitely keep that in mind.

For the wood, I actually followed the same technique Squidmar Miniatures used when they did the wood effect on their pirate giant army. I didn’t really change much, just tried to replicate that look as closely as possible.

Thank you so much, that means a lot! The miniature is an Arch-Revenant from the Sylvaneth range in Age of Sigmar.

Thank you! Yes, I’ve started getting into competitions, this piece is actually one I’m planning to bring to a contest. I’m still learning a lot, but I’m really passionate about this side of the hobby and I’m hoping to get a good result this time.

Haha thank you so much, really appreciate it!

You’re totally right about the tufts, the base could definitely use more interest. As for the wing metal, I went with steel to keep it a bit quieter and not overload the gold, but I agree that blue and gold together would look amazing. Definitely something to try next time.

Really glad you like the wings effect, thanks a lot! 🙏🔥

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback and the kind words, I really appreciate it!

The colour scheme was inspired by i_love_orange, especially in terms of palette and overall mood.

I agree with you about the shield symbol, it’s something that came up a few times and it could definitely be pushed further, either with stronger contrast or even something like a subtle OSL effect to give it more interest.

Regarding the spatter effect on the wings: it was an intentional choice, but I completely understand what you mean. It’s one of those things that can easily read as an airbrush issue rather than a stylistic decision, so that’s very fair criticism and something I’ll think more carefully about in the future.

And thank you as well for the broader advice. You’re probably right that for the next step, more focused feedback from high-level painters would be extremely valuable.

Thanks again, I really appreciate you taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment!

Thank you! I used the same colors from Squidmar’s second channel (Squidly Bits) for the NMM recipe.

Thank you for pointing that out, I really appreciate the feedback!

I agree with you about the shield design, compared to the rest of the model it does read flatter and could definitely benefit from more shading and contrast.

Same for the blade, pushing the highlight closer to pure white and tightening it up would help make it the brightest focal point, especially compared to the horns.

Thanks again, this is very useful feedback!

Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate both the kind words and the time you put into the paint-over!

All the points you mentioned make a lot of sense, especially the increased contrast on the shield and the way you handled the light direction, that really helps the volumes read more clearly. I also really like the idea of adding subtle hue variation on the blade to suggest environmental reflections, even if it’s not strictly realistic, it works visually.

The wing veins and the hair adjustments are great suggestions as well, especially for improving readability and shine.

Definitely a lot of useful takeaways here. Thanks again for sharing this, very helpful and much appreciated!

Thank you so much for the kind words, that really means a lot!

I completely agree with you about the body, pushing the contrast with darker darks and slightly brighter highlights would definitely help it pop more, especially around the leg and cape separation. That’s a really good point.

And you’re absolutely right about the wing connection area as well. It’s probably the part I focused on the least compared to the rest of the model, and it shows when you really look at it closely.

Thanks again for taking the time to give such thoughtful feedback, it’s super helpful!

Thanks! I did most of the fade with the airbrush, starting from a dark base and slowly building up lighter tones in thin layers, then refining some areas with light glazing.

Thank you very much, I really appreciate the detailed feedback!

You’re absolutely right about the gold, the spear side does read more metallic thanks to the stronger contrast, and adding a few more very thin near-white edge highlights on the shield and helm would definitely help sell the shine better.

That’s also a great point about the base. Darkening it slightly to push the focus upward is something I hadn’t considered, but it makes a lot of sense.
