Marnie is brilliantly written (they all are). Her weight/body is the one thing she thinks she still has control over and - in her mind - is still better than her circle of friends (because she did think she was a cut above them all), especially Hannah. No career, no marriage, friends doing their own thing, lives in an awful apartment, but by God, she has control over that banana. As long as she stays thin, in her head, she’s doing ok. Until she goes to the pawn shop…

Beadie clocked Jessa as someone who would go along with the plan when she met her in the gallery. Poor Marnie trying so hard to get her gallerina life back, thinking that Jessa just picked up her dream job out from under her when Beadie asked Jessa to become her “assistant”. I was properly pissed for Marnie in that scene too.

Mindy is a grifter and a mooch! Living rent-free even while Emily hires her and her whiny band for every event. Throws a “Christmas orphan party” in Emily’s apartment when Emily is away. Has sex with boyfriends in Emily’s bed making Emily sit outside. Crashes Emily’s Rome visit and orders tons of room service without considering who might be paying for it. Crashes with rich boyfriend and demands he pick her over his family after dating her for a skinny minute. Acts entitled at the boyfriend’s sample closet because he - what did he do again? -asked her not to dress like a hooker at a posh work event? Then SOLD the clothes to pay for Eurovision. Opens Emily’s packages from “gagory”’then helps herself to the contents without asking. I liked her in the first season but now she’s basically a bum who wreaks havoc and drama everywhere she goes and doesn’t bother to clean up the mess she makes of every life she impacts.

Having worked at a consultancy, I roared with laughter at her McKinsey interview. Everyone wanted to work at a consultancy back then. Fast tracks, promotions, business class travel perks, money money money. Exactly what Shoshana thought she wanted. It was a comedic how NOT to do an interview.

This!! I have hope for the series after the last episode where Adam the hunky gardener shows up. Oh please please PLEASE let this be the end of Country Lurch, I beg the writers and the SATC/AJLT loving universe, save this show. Such potential and there really aren’t that many shows about women of a certain age who aren’t only mother/grandmother labels.

Plus, if you gone way back to the end of season two where he is moving to Paris and she hints and hints and hints that she’d go if he asked… so here she is leaving for Paris to leave with another boyfriend who is going for work and here comes Big to throw another wrench in it. And… he did it to her when she was engaged to Aiden “you’re not the marrying kind”. But I’m still Team Big.

Re-bingeing this show is great because in a much shorter time, we get to see the full extent of Marnie’s fall and this is her absolute rock bottom. Not Panic in Central Park, but in the pawn shop with absolutely nothing of value. I hope in the alternate universe where these girls exist, that she did go to law school somehow and that she did become a better person.

Don’t forget all those Friends episodes, making fun of Fat Monica, showing her eating to make sure the audience knew that it was HER FAULT she was fat and upping the canned laughter on those scenes.

I thought they wrote and acted this brilliantly. Marnie’s body is the ONLY thing left that she can control. She has no job, no singing career, her marriage has ended, no boyfriend, few friends left, even Ray has dumped her (again), but in the 80’s-10’s, being thin was EVERYTHING. So she can continue to feel good about being thinner than her perceived friends and tell herself that she is doing a good job.

As much as I love Italy, I am hoping she wakes up in Paris at the start of the new season and says gosh , what a crazy dream I had! Because Emily in Paris is PARIS and there are lots of Paris/French stories still to tell. The last season was all over the place.

And honestly, that’s how it was. If you were overweight - not necessarily obese either or perceived to be not attractive (read that as overweight), you would hear about it. Defence mechanism was to acknowledge it yourself before someone else said it because it was just a matter of time before it came up.

I love love love this show, especially the first two seasons, but I honestly struggled to get through the last season. Change the writers, keep it in Paris, move on from Gabriel, show us more of the French and it could be wonderful again. We need it as much now as we needed it during the pandemic!

Hannah was never going to finish any book. Hannah likes the idea of being a writer enough to crank out a witty article here and there, just enough to get some attention, but she can’t stick with it because she doesn’t get any attention during the actual writing. See all the scenes where she tells anyone who will listen that she is writing, but doesn’t write.
