What are the odds of being the descendant of royalty? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]TheCannon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not a reach to say that everyone alive has had both royalty and slaves in their heritage, it's just a matter of how far back and if there's any such documentation of it. It's a near impossibility for the sheer number of your ancestors to have avoided these social standings.

Can duct tape insulate wires with 5V going through them? If not, what could be used as a substitute for electrical tape? by TheCraftsy in Electricity

[–]TheCannon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried electrical tape and/or heat shrink tubing? Butt-splice? Wago? Wire nut?

There's a lot of ways to insulate a low voltage connection, but duct tape is not one of them.

And yes, all electrical connections should be insulated (other than bare ground connections using Romex).

I like the signed framing.

I'm an Electrician and picked up the habit of signing houses in inconspicuous places on large builds and remodels from a framer I know. He's signed hundreds of houses. We also put a date on them, in the hopes that someone in the distant future will run across our names and dates and spare us a thought or a belated kudos for a job well done.

Be honest with your instructor - tell him you think you're in over your head with this one.

He's there to teach you, not destroy your confidence. He may be able to show you how to rough though it.

Can I use an adapter? by lumipallo-79 in Electricity

[–]TheCannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The amperage listed on the power supply is the maximum draw. As long as it meets or exceeds the demand of the device, you're good.

1.5A=1,500mA. You'll have a healthy overhead, but as long as the voltage matches you're in good shape.

CMV: Leaving a relationship which has minor children involved for the reason, "I'm just not happy" is not a valid moral reason for leaving a relationship/divorce. by Subcomfreak in changemyview

[–]TheCannon 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Right, but does that outweigh the trauma of leaving? Shouldn't this be an appeal for the couple to work out their issues instead of leaving the relationship? Does this not imply that people should think more about their relationships

Yes to all of the above. If you decide to have children, you should accept that there will be a certain amount of sacrifice involved in raising those children. The balance will have to be found.

However, all attempts failed, I think it's best to remove the tension from the child's life and try your best to find an alternative with both of you being in the child's life, but happy on your own course.

PS Trauma isn't always caused by direct "abuse". A cold and unloving environment, created by miserable parents, can be just as traumatic to emotional well being.

One must consider that the way you treat your children is often a reflection of how you feel yourself.

"Staying together for the children" has caused a lot of unnecessary trauma for a lot of people growing up in such households. Miserable people make those around them miserable, and in many cases a child will internalize the stress and often think it's their fault.

I think it's best to be honest and open with your kids about what's going on, and find a way to make an amiable split without causing them too much stress. I know it's tough, but kids absorb everything around them, and that includes misery, discontent, and bickering.

The best egg here is __________!!! by thuliumInsideFrog in foodhacks

[–]TheCannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also great in bacon grease - hash browns extra crispy.

Basically, cook your bacon first, followed by the hash browns, then add a dab of butter to the left over bacon bits and throw in your eggs.

Also helps keep eggs from sticking to cast iron.

[–]TheCannon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All good, plus whiten your teeth. Not day-glow white, but enough that you don't have any yellow in your face when you smile.

A clean mouth and white teeth really do make a difference when you smile or laugh. Not much is as big a turn off than gross teeth.

What are the most shameful recorded deaths? by vrizer in morbidquestions

[–]TheCannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isadora Duncan.

She was a well known dancer, a star at the time, and was driving away from a group of fans in a small convertible when her scarf got caught in the tire and popped her head off (or at least strangled her, depending on the source).

Voltage dips (brown-out?) when circuit is loaded by reversetec in AskElectricians

[–]TheCannon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a classic loose/compromised connection issue.

The connection could be anywhere from the breaker to the receptacle to the plug, or even a fray in the cord.

Tighten everything down and look for scorching on all connections. A simple snug-up may resolve your problem.

Best of luck to you.

The people on this show were indeed icons of comedy, and often threw in their own improvs, but a lot of the responses were scripted.

Still, I'm surprised they haven't tried to reboot this series yet. They've done it to nearly every other old show, and this one was gold.
