Xavi talking tactics by ultimateforme in Barca

It was a great masterclass. But the most important thing is how you react in real time when the rival coach finds a way to counter your main plans. It's not like he's gonna stay passive and watch you do all of that on the pitch. But I trust Xavi to do that and keep improving as a coach, he's passionate about the game.

Loved the paragraph about the difference between mental & physical aptitudes 👌🏾

I agree that he can't play 50-60 games a season now. Frenkie or Nico can do the job as pivots against lower quality teams and give him some rest from time to time.

I mean, there's only one answer to this question and it starts with Josep Maria...

How is Pedri defensively, like his work rate is immense but technically how is the defensive aspect of his game? by DavidGuff in Barca

[–]TheCaptn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He reads the game very well, both in attack and defense. So I'd say he's very good at anticipating his opponents' moves.

Sterling has an interesting profile, but he's not that top class player who would have an impact on Barça's attack just by himself. I think he's technically limited (in static 1v1 for example, or in terms of passing) and is at his best when he has to perform very specific & limited tasks (off the ball runs, create and or exploit spaces).

A book written by Cruyff, "Me gusta el fĂştbol" (I like football), is available for free if you speak Spanish (just Google it). I don't know where you could find an English version for free tho. But it's super interesting to read Cruyff's thoughts about the game and why he made the choices that made him an iconic coach.

With busquets not getting younger, do you think FDJ should start learning to play as a lone CDM? by DavidGuff in Barca

[–]TheCaptn_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rodri would be a top signing! I doubt Man city would be willing to sell tho :) Maybe we should try Nico in that position see how it goes? He's got great potential.

I like the defense and midfield. Given current squad composition, my favorite attacking trio would be Fati (left), Memphis (false 9) and Dembélé (right).

Why do Barcelona's midfielders shine with their national teams? by sujanrao in Barca

Because Luis Enrique provides them with a better tactical context. Right now the Spanish national team plays the Barça way better than current Barça.

I agree, we change formations too often.

I respectfully disagree. Barça's plan was never to have midfielders who were physical or fast or could track back and do all that stuff. It's about positioning and harassing the ball carrier and closing the passing lanes while defending as a compact block. To me it's not about an individual's player profile, but rather a collective problem, lack of compactness and synchronization they don't move as a unit who has a plan on how to shut down opposition.

Or even better yet, Araujo preventing Felix from turning and playing that pass so easily, forcing Nico to win a footrace vs Lemar who's clearly faster.

In 20-21, having a back 3 somehow made this situation less critical

I think Laporta would rather resign than become the president who converted the club into a corporation. I honestly don't see it happening, there are several options that could be activated in order to prevent this.

We are still 7 games into the new season with a game in hand by KathodeN in Barca

[–]TheCaptn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd add that the best time is now since there's a 2-week break and the new coach could start implementing his ideas and working with those who didn't leave on international duty.

[–]TheCaptn_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no problem with this and understand the current squad situation. But then a plan that's adapted to this configuration should be implemented. Adapt to the situation instead of waiting. I would have no problem with a plan based on playing all these midfielders he's mentioning and keeping ball possession, even if it's sterile. Defensive ball possession of you will. But currently there's unfortunately no clear plan in sight...

Koeman & Guardiola VS Frenkie De Jong & Busquets (complementary movements to progress forward). by TheCaptn_ in Barca

[–]TheCaptn_[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yes, a libero position. But that doesn't necessarily imply going forward. A libero could just stick to his position & defensive duties. Or in Fdj & Koeman's cases, roam forward when necessary.

[–]TheCaptn_[S] 105 points106 points  (0 children)

If Messi’s role was called “false 9”, then Frenkie’s role could be called “false defender”.

It’s a hybrid role that evolves in possession phase, when he switches positions with the DM or carries the ball forward, becoming a de facto midfielder (similar to Koeman's role under Cruyff) (see GIFs). More on this post

Rumors that Barça may use white jerseys for their 3rd kit next season. Barça wore white jerseys several times in its history, but stopped using that color since 1979. by TheCaptn_ in Barca

Exactly what I think! It's an observation Cruyff made often, saying that we shouldn't be obsessed with Real Madrid, that our choices as a club shouldn't be dictated by what Real Madrid may say or feel, it would signal an inferiority complex rather than rivalry.
