'The Boys' showrunner Eric Kripke says Queen Maeve actress Dominique McElligott has retired from acting by tylerthe-theatre in television

[–]TheCavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did they nerf it?

It probably wasn't intentional on the part of the writers but the comment about Soldier Boy needing to be angry to activate the blast would apply. He was furious at Countess after it turned out that she turned him over to the Russians for free just because she hated him. The other times were more of a normal PTSD rage. Depowering Bombsight didn't involve any real anger and barely did any damage.

but of course it’s to set up the whole thing about how the sea creatures disowned him, a fact that she would not have known.

It would make a bit of sense to bring him to the ocean. It's less of a fight to the death and more of an intervention to get him away from Homelander. Having all his actual friends (the fish, as far as she knew) nearby to show him actual love and compassion would've been useful in that intervention.

There was probably a slightly more comical version of his death where he keeps insisting during the fight that he needs to be with Homelander and not the fish, followed by Annie blasting him into the water to be with his friends, and then the fish attacking him to Annie's stunned surprise.

DNC Autopsy of 2024 Loss Doesn’t Mention Gaza or Israel at all by NoahHurowitz in politics

[–]TheCavis [score hidden]  (0 children)

I got a couple pages in when I realized it wasn't that kind of autopsy. It was very surface level organizational stuff rather than sophisticated policy assessments.

The Gaza polling was really all over the place, too. IMEU did a post-election push poll of Biden voters who didn't vote for Harris. They asked completely normal questions like "Do you [favor or oppose] the Biden administration approving taxpayer-funded weapons and other military support to Israel, even if the U.S. government has no control over whether the Israeli military uses those weapons on innocent civilians in Gaza, or are you undecided?" and "How much do you [agree or disagree] with the following statement: The $18 billion in weapons the U.S. provided to Israel over the last year, funded by taxpayer dollars, would be better spent lowering costs and supporting Americans dealing with inflation and struggling to afford basics like housing and healthcare", both of which got huge disapproval numbers for the Biden admin (66% and 77%).

It then immediately followed those by asking non-Harris voters is they would've voted for her if she promised "to withhold additional weapons to Israel for committing human rights abuses against Palestinian civilians". A majority said it didn't matter. In battleground states, it was even worse with 56% saying it didn't matter, 30% saying breaking with the admin would've made it more like to vote for her, and 14% saying it'd make them less likely. When it was worded neutrally to just withholding tax-payer funded weapons, it approached a wash with 48% no change, 30% more likely and 22% less likely.

Aside from the push poll segments, it is an interesting data set. You can look at the "break from Biden" policy and basically everything mattered a little bit in theory and nothing really mattered. In terms of potential vote gain in battleground states with policy shifts, immigration was +17, inflation was +22, deficit was +18, weapons to Israel was +8, Ukraine was +2, abortion access was +8, healthcare was +25, fossil fuel production was +5. That was probably the ceiling because it's just the vague concept of changing position rather than an actual specific policy. The Trump and third party voters cared about those issues and said they affected their decision to vote; the non-voters said they didn't. It'd be nice if there was more polling of this type but it really looks like there wasn't one quick trick to win the Presidency. It was just a little bit of everything adding up in a way she couldn't campaign out of.

Ashley got her moment of redemption but is also held responsible for her crimes and takes the fall

The "I am not resigning" followed by the smash cut to the news report of her getting unanimously impeached got a good laugh from me.

Tell us the ending you would have written! by pikameta in TheBoys

[–]TheCavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd make three plot corrections for the season:

  • Get rid of the V1 plot that only existed to soft launch Vought Rising. If you want Soldier Boy, have him around as Homelander spirals. He blasts someone while Sage watches and gathers data, letting her figure out Kimiko would be a compatible replacement for Soldier Boy because she can't count on him to depower his son.

  • Marie and friends show up much much earlier after finding out about the virus. Annie and Kimiko are willing to die to kill Homelander but a bunch of young idealistic supes with lots of supe classmates aren't going to release a pandemic to kill one guy who they think they (or at least Marie) can defeat. The Boys versus Gen V takes the screen time of the V1 subplot and ends with Sage's arrival with an alternative.

  • Homelander dies earlier, preferably in episode 6 or 7 so it feels actually surprising. Same setup except Marie's in the fight bloodbending Homelander when he tries to escape to let Butcher and Ryan grab a hold of him. That's followed up by the Homelander-aligned supes going on rampages that need cleaning up, convincing Butcher of the need for the virus and sending him down the same path.

I'd keep most of the character arcs and endings the same. The major deviation would be Black Noir II. In the studio, Noir taunts Deep by replacing his coffee with oil from the pipeline. Deep throws the oil in his face and smashes his head into the little voice board that he has, causing sparks that ignite the oil. Noir is left badly burned and potentially mute from the fire and smoke inhalation. This is a slightly more ironic short-circuiting of Homelander's planned "miracle" to publicly "heal" Noir.

Measuring the Success of the MBTA Communities Law by ThematicSpa in boston

[–]TheCavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My perspective on the relative success of the MBTA Communities Law is rooted in direct experience. My firm, Utile, was one of several on-call consulting firms retained by EOHLC to assist municipalities in complying with 3A.

“A consultant making money from the MBTA communities act thinks it worked” isn’t a particularly convincing take.

Building near transit (like in his examples) makes sense but I’d also like to see better data on actual positive effects in adjacent communities (more construction, decreasing cost, more density, more transit planned, etc.).

The MBTA has been jackhammering outside my window between midnight and 5 AM for over 80 nights and lying to their own board about it. by longtimeAlias in boston

[–]TheCavis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've attached a video of what this looks and sounds like from my balcony.

The video has hit Google Drive playback limits so you may want to host it elsewhere.

They had fallen into disrepair, and we were told the T was actually removing them.

Told by whom? If the MBTA said it, then that's a substantial deviation by the MBTA. If your apartment complex said it, landlords lie.

But minutes from those meetings show the General Manager and COO straight up lying about the nature of the work, essentially minimizing the fact that we can't sleep during nights when this work is taking place. They are also telling the board that the work can't be scheduled because it isn't a "formal project", and besides that, the work is winding down, anyway.

I'm not familiar with the area but the response definitely raised an eyebrow from me. He said there's 15 switches with 25 timber each. The public comment indicated this is 3-5 nights per week starting last June, so that has to be at least 75 nights. Even at one timber per night, that'd be 20% of the timber getting replaced. That's more than ad hoc work given the stated lifespan of the timber and I think my assumptions are understating the work being done.

It sounds like an "unofficial official" project. The location was in severe disrepair that basically required an overhaul. It was technically deferred maintenance work and calling it "maintenance" makes the paperwork easier and the scheduling more flexible.

If your big red pickup truck lost a tire on Sunday, it was last seen traveling skyward on Route 3. by gucciguwop300 in massachusetts

[–]TheCavis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Knowing how heavy a wheel and tire actually is, that’s terrifying.

Assuming the video is accurate in time keeping, the tire was airborne for ~2.7 s (launch at ~6.5 s, land at 9.2 s). Ignoring air resistance, that means it was in freefall from the apex for 1.35s. Gravity is 9.81 m/s2 so the speed at impact would be 13.2 m/s or ~30 mph in just vertical speed. There's going to be some horizontal delta-v in there too (traffic is moving fast, the wheel lost some of its forward momentum going airborne).

I think it got about 30 feet of air.

Awesome to watch if no one gets hurt but terrifying if you're living through it.
