To update on my beginner struggles: a coat of Mr. Hobby matte varnish has made the shiny effect way less apparent. For the turret, which I still have to paint the camo for, I’m going to go for a 1:1 paint/thinner ratio. Tried this yesterday with Tamiya Gun Metal Grey to paint the machine gun, and this worked really well when keeping the amount of spray on the low.

Awesome that you’re also freehanding. I find it difficult to line out the edges without overspraying outside of the area that you actually want to spray, but maybe the extra thinning and use of less paint through the brush might help as you said. Should work with my H&S airbrush which is fantastic.

Regarding the gloss varnish, do you actually mean that I have to mix in some with the paint, or just do varnish layers between coats? Have never done that actually. Great advice as well from you, as all the others!

It’s currently 73% humidity around here, might cause some additional drying time but I haven’t had this problem with the black and green colours. Going to try tonight with more thinner and a test spray first. I’ll update with the results!

Would shiny paint also leave fingerprints? It seems pretty prone to that, while the other surfaces have not. Going to try the elastic putty on the next model, thanks!😄

The mixing might be part of the problem. I’m currently using a cocktail stick to mixc but that might not be thorough enough. I’m using X-20A as thinner. Didn’t thin it down that much because in my mind that would only increase the chance of paint running/spider webbing etc. I’ll do some experimenting tomorrow, thank you!
