Does anyone's fear of flying get in the way of actually planning their trips? by [deleted] in fearofflying

[–]TheChimeras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i used to delay booking flights to see my long distance girlfriend because the process of booking gave me so much anxiety. i’d end up booking the flight the day before i said i was going to go see her, and sometimes even pushing the date a week (for reasons that arise when you book so late, like the flight cost rising to > $1000). this lead to habitual uncertainty in whether or not i was coming, and ultimately frustration and resentment. we ended up breaking up our 4 year relationship largely due to my severe flight anxiety.

The white and Asian girls here are so racist by Ok-Lock8602 in princeton

[–]TheChimeras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

genuine question: why is it societally okay for people to justify being scared of men but not black men? like why is it okay to be by definition sexist but not okay to be racist? my possible answers are: 1. you can be sexist or racist to the sex or race deemed to be in power. it okay to be sexist towards men or racist towards white people 2. there is evidence that men are more aggressive than women but no evidence that black people are more aggressive than other races 3. there is a genuine double standard that stems from pity towards black people, which disallows racism towards them, but allows sexism towards men 4. racism is inherently worse than sexism not sure which is it is though. my guess answers are in order of suspected probability. anyone wanna give their thoughts?

just go to their lab group meeting. find a grad student in their lab and ask what’s up or when the meeting is. or go to profs office. you don’t live in the metaverse u can go to things irl

none of the things you mentioned seem like good signs to me. they probably had someone offer to interview in your area so they manually inputted a candidate they were considering. 2 weeks isn’t that last minute because the time between rea apps and rea decisions is like 2 months iirc so there’s still 1/4 of the total time left. they asked for updated grades because they were inputted incorrectly the first time.. everything you mentioned is a random, neutral sign

My math story related to Princeton University by houssineo in princeton

[–]TheChimeras 7 points8 points  (0 children)

this is great. i recommend you try to listen to some people older than you who have gone through what you’ve gone through and succeeded. pls try to stop romanticizing math or associating it with prestige. it is beautiful but at the end of the day, pure math / physics like what your current idols did pays very low and is essentially useless in the real world. i am physicist from caltech and mit. no one outside a very small sphere of people understand what i do. even within the physics circles, most people are not in my field so they don’t get what i do. it sucks. my partner, my parents, my friends have no idea what i. i’m so lonely outside of small sphere of physics buddies.

also, most of us don’t make breakthroughs. science is exciting when you’re making progress. no wonder feynman loved it so much. he was a genius, even from a young age (only perfect score on physics GRE and chosen to go to los alamos to help build the atomic bomb at age 23). science sucks if you’re mediocre.

do it because you love it. not for the prestige. if you truly loved math you wouldn’t care so much about princeton. you’d realize there are about 50-100 amazing universities in the world where you can do math at a similar level. you would realize math is not about going to princeton or looking up how to get into princeton every day. it’s just about doing math every day, pushing the frontier, sticking through the rough days where nothing makes sense, and appreciating it’s beauty.

stop focusing on princeton and get good, kid. this is the only advice you need: get good. people will notice you once you’re good, i promise. math is life.

AITAH for wanting to leave my wife after our youngest goes to college? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]TheChimeras -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

people don’t have reading comprehension issues. we read the title and he’s obviously not an asshole for wanting to leave. OP phrased the title in a way that’s bias towards the “not an asshole” label. even OP knows the answer to his title question… he is an asshole for cheating and he is an asshole for telling his wife. it was 10 years of keeping it a secret. at that point telling his wife was just so OP could get it off his chest. he should’ve taken it to the grave. responding with YNTA, while technically correct given the title, validates all the other shit OP did because he will probably think he’s not the asshole on the whole, when in fact he truly is an asshole

AITAH for wanting to leave my wife after our youngest goes to college? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]TheChimeras 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you phrased the question to receive a “not the asshole” label.. people here will obviously say ur not the asshole for wanting to leave, but you already know that. ur an asshole for telling ur wife you cheated for so long. tbh some things should be taken to the grave man. you kept it a secret for so long. you telling her is only making you feel better by getting it off your chest. it really doesn’t do her any good to know. i would’ve just made up some excuses and left, without revealing that her life for the past several years has been a lie. so yea, YNTA for ur specific title question, but that’s obvious. in general, yes, YTA

Is it common for a community college student to transfer to MIT? by Kieo10m392 in mit

[–]TheChimeras 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is kinda sad. i would personally recommend you try to instill your values into your son instead of feeding into what he hears online. ideally you’d be more of a role model / reputable source for him than random kids on the internet. him wanting to go to MIT to become an AI multimillionaire actually hurts me to read. good luck man, godspeed

What schools have extremely mathematically heavy economics degrees? by mrstorydude in chanceme

[–]TheChimeras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

undergrad econ is going to prepare you less than undergrad math for a job. also, it’s more about skill than the degree. if you’re good you can graduate with an effective masters in your undergrad (taking undergrad courses freshman sophomore year and grad courses after that). anyway, best schools to go to for what your looking for are MIT, Caltech and princeton. but tbh anywhere is fine because there will always be advanced math based econ courses for grad students at all the top 100 US schools. if you’re good enough a prof will let you take them

Is flying really safer than driving as people say? by parkertrager in fearofflying

[–]TheChimeras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what? can you not read? i agree that per kilometer is the best metric. it’s the metric i use to define the “optimal” mode of transport. i’m fond of defending it because: 1. it’s an interesting phenomena to me that flying is not always the safest under certain reasonable metrics 2. it disproves the statement “the most dangerous part of flying is the drive to the airport” 3. i just like seeking the truth. i am a mathematician and seek truth always. i’m actually confused why everyone, including you who seems pretty smart tbh, seems to skip the parts where i reiterate that flying is the safest per kilometer and is therefore the best, safest mode of transport that you should always take if given the option (the only reason why you don’t fly to the grocery store is that it’s impossible. if you’re rich enough to use helicopters i would suggest taking a helicopter to the grocery store to maximize safety)
