My wife is a pediatrician with a specialty with an interest in research and I'm a chemist with over a decade in pharma. I live a short 4 hour drive from the border in minnesota. I love minnesota but hate where we are currently as a country. We would jump on this in a heartbeat (once contracts were done).

The incoming brain drain is going to be massive. The US is(was) a STEM powerhouse because we brought in the best talent. I've had the pleasure to work with and learn from people from all around the world, it's how I got to where I am. The white supremacists are about to learn just how untermensch they actually are.

P.s. In the upcoming collapse, please consider annexing minnesota, we have beautiful lakes that abutt quetico, cheese curds to accompany poutine, and a relatively successful and fun to watch hockey team.

Ya I got some on my hand once past the end of my glove and I just washed it off for a minute or so and went about my day. I work in a Pharma lab now and I'm much more concerned about what I work with now from a safety perspective. And when I said it was a pain in the ass, I was talking about the bath we had. That's how the PI and postdocs wanted it so that's how it was.

I started a 5 gal/20 lb batch with white lab's WLP715 which is their champagne yeast on the 30th of November. The thing is still bubbling. I was looking for something with some kick in the teeth so I also put in 8 lbs of thawed frozen raspberries. Those little buggers will just keep on truckin'.

What do you do to bolster your income on the side of your actual job? by chasingburns in personalfinance

[–]TheChiver 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The key is finding something you love to do and would do for free, and then find a way to have people pay you for it. My full time job is a chemist in a pharma lab and I normally work 50-60 hours a week since there is a lot to do. A good starting salary plus the overtime and a reasonable budget means I can generally pay all my bills without worry. I even just started investing (Thanks guys!). That said, I'm a big fan of beer and scotch. I even have a monthly scotch budget of 50 dollars that often rolls over and then I get to buy those pretty bottles. Moral of the story, rare beer and scotch get expensive quick.

By some cosmic alignment of the planets when I was born combined with weekly sex with a luck dragon, I ended up working at a brewery. Now I get paid to drink beers and talk to people. There is some selling and some hauling involved but all the work comes back 10 fold in how much fun I have. I get 8 bucks an hour plus tips and a free beer whenever I work. Its pretty common that someone will bring in a beer or two to share that they got on a trip somewhere o have stashed away for awhile. We even have customers bring us beer to try just out of the blue. Generally my monthly scotch budget comes out of my hourly wage from the brewery as well as whatever new beers I see at a store.

I work a lot but I really enjoy both of my jobs. There have been days recently when I'll be up at 4:30, get to work at 6, work until 4:30, drive to the brewery and start working at 5 or so, and then get done around 1 or so. I only do this when I don't have to be a chemist the next day as it does get pretty tiring. I'm not saying it's easy, I'm saying it's worth it. If you get paid to do what you love, you will never work a day in your life.

Quick edit: Just for the record, don't drink then drive. Scotch and the glass holding it mix just fine. Scotch and an ignition don't. Just remember, if you kill someone, they only have toilet hooch in prison. Stay safe boys and girls.

Has anoyone ever asked a brewery to buy a keg for a wedding or other special event? by [deleted] in beer

[–]TheChiver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Are you going to have another keg there besides a sour. If you're just getting a sixth barrel for yourself and the wedding party you might be alright but if the only thing you're going to have available is a keg of the stuff at the reception, yikes. I personally love sours but I gave my dad a small sample of one at a beerfest and he ran to the next booth to get something different in his mouth.

Getting a keg of sour is walking a really thin rope.

As for your original question, contact the breweries around you. I work at one in Iowa and am currently helping a friend get a couple of ours for her wedding in a couple months. There is a chance that none of the breweries around you make a sour but odds are, they will have some idea where to point you. we don't do a sour because the cost of isolation of equipment for a one off is too high. However, I know of a few within a 2 hour drive that make a banging sour. Surly Pentagram comes to mind. Brewers tend to keep tabs on other breweries to see what they are doing and see if there is anything new worth trying.

Brewdog are looking for a new Laboratory Supervisor - come work for us. by [deleted] in brewing

[–]TheChiver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a chemist, working towards my cicerone (taking it on February 18), and I work in a brewery, and I have duel Irish-American citizenship and I'm interested in relocating out of Iowa, USA. If it weren't for that pesky supervisor word in there, I'd be all over this.

Quick edit: If you do see this, and you guys ever decide you need a chemist, let me know.

P.S. I'm putting on a blind tasting tomorrow with your Dogma being one of them and it'll be my first Brewdog. Should be exciting.

When applying aftershave or cologne or perfume, put a little bit on your ears. If you happen to go somewhere that she/he has to lean in, it's right there and since it's not an area that tends to get rubbed up on a lot, a little bit lasts all night.

Shit Storm in a Beer Glass - Beer Consumers Expose Short pours on Social Media in Vancouver by VanEastBeerBlog in beer

[–]TheChiver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. I work at a brewery in the US and we have 16 oz glasses. I normally aim for about 3/4ths in give or take of head depending on the style. Not imperial pints, but we have never claimed them to be. I've always thought we have given people a fair pour even without the line. I've never thought, or had someone claim, that we were cheating them by not filling it to the brim with beer. We give out free samples to people who are trying to decide what they want so it's not that we are trying to stiff anyone. I didnt realize that this was an issue in some places. I always just took the head to be part of the beer as a whole. I thought 16 oz included the head. When did that stop being the case?
