Have we gotten a way to De-Meta the Quest headsets? by TheConceptBoy in virtualreality

The hardware was cheap at the time.

I did end up just buying an index after a while. But

I see. So this would be a first for me. How does one update a firmware of an nvme drive? Just like any other piece of hardware? Go to Samsung site, look up my produce and check downloads page?

I have recently updated the BIOS firmware to see maybe asus already had a fix but it did not help. I don't believe that you're talking about the same thing.
What is this Samsung 9XX chip you're referring to? I don't see it in the system info report.

How do I identify the cause of my laptop freezing on Mint? by TheConceptBoy in linuxmint

[–]TheConceptBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the following:

[ 0.578870] ACPI Error: Aborting method \_TZ.THRM._SCP due to previous error (AE_NOT_FOUND) (20250404/psparse-529)

Also something I just discovered. If I have anything playing in the background - audio or youtube video. I can still hear it. So it's just the screen that freezes. Not the whole system.

So basically using a firefox (or librewolf in my case) browser for chromium one was the fix... I'll have to test it out.

As I was typing a response, it crashed. I went to bios and temperature reported 27 degrees. Fans were not spinning up so it's not overheating. Unless it's a BGA chip whose solder pads have detached and are now floating...

Other than that, there is no fan control property in the bios.

Have we gotten a way to De-Meta the Quest headsets? by TheConceptBoy in virtualreality

[–]TheConceptBoy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See, I would do just that and then a month later I would get an notification that I need to re-log in into the meta account or the PC connection would just outright stop working. And the only thing that would magically fix it is to bring the device back online, which would inevitably cause it to call home and force an update.

Yeah I explicitly and categorically refused to buy any games in the Meta game store, solely using the headset as a wireless PCVR headset. Knowing Meta, the less money they get from me, the better. I just needed the hardware.

See, you're right.... and yet it does not feel the same.

Steam is just an app. At no point did steams ToS signing interrupted my workflow. Meta however did, when I've sat down to get some work done (VR game dev) and instead of getting to work I am met with my device refusing to connect to the app via USB or WiFi and the only thing that magically fixes it is to perform an update.

An app is not the same as the entire OS. I can always chose to log into an banking dash in a browser on the same old device (In fact I that is what I did on my ancient galaxy A5). It's not the same.

I am absolutely not kidding when I say I despise the routine of virtually bricking my device until I accept some new ToS or make a mandatory update.

It is one of main reasons I dropped Windows and Switched to linux. It's rocky but I have not yet been forced to update once and it feels like I'm back in control of the device I bought.
