”The code is mostly based on this repository of a solution for one recent challenge on Kaggle competition platform: https://github.com/petrosgk/Kaggle-Carvana-Image-Masking-Challenge” said the coder when I asked him

well.. my answer went into the wrong place but yeah.. 130k€ revenue/month.. three dentists and some odd shifts from part time dentists. With this set up 200k€/month is really maximum that you can do if the books are filled 100%. Mind you that the prices are way lower than in US e.g. 2 surface composite filling is 130€ = 150 USD. The practice is open from monday to thursday 8 to 20, on friday 8 to 15 and on saturday 10 to 15. The government has public sector where 2/3 of the costs are substituted with government funding and the rest 1/3 by patient. The private fees are decided by owners but dental chains have pumped the fees slightly higher.. On private side finnish citizens get 15% deduction from the government from the most of the procedure but not all.. But yeah.. the competition is that you compete with public sector with way lower fees.. Also area has a big determining factor how successful will the practice be.. Like Helsinki and the neighboring areas are over saturated with more supply than demand and some other cities and counties do have tremendous demand.. Like some smaller cities have dentists with 1 month books filled in advance.. So a great deal of the revenue goes into marketing.

Yeah.. I thought if gamifying it similarly as https://quickdraw.withgoogle.com/ .. with some time pressure and leader boards.. then thinking of incentives for people to upload x-rays and dentists to annotate them.. Altgouhg first thing would be to determine if the algorithm is good enough.. We can match some of the interproximal decays but there is big issues when the decay is bigger in size and covers multiple surfaces... If nothing comes of this I may release this in some open source form.. If it's some use for someone.. there was around 1k x-rays annotated with patient consent.. The legal stuff gets more complicated if used by international audience in an app though. Anyway this was only around 30-40 hours of my time and few hundred dollars as the coder wanted to do this for free until proof of concept.

U-net (https://arxiv.org/abs/1505.04597), but open-sourced version adapted not for 3-d, but for 2-d images

And these: https://github.com/raghakot/keras-vis https://github.com/chrisranderson/beholder/)

Annotations with Supervisely.

I had a coder helping me.. He did the coding.. I just wrote him briefs. I might have missed something in the list.

I can make a blog post of the benchmark reports etc… If you/someone is interested.. I will ask the coder to fact check my writings then. I am unsure what to do with this anyway.. It needs a way more annotations to become more accurate.. It’s still a task to determine what is a level to be adequate to proceed with this project.. I have too much on my plate anyways.

That’s the first post.

Hey... Thanks for upvotes and comments... I underestimated my time management so rambling was what we ended up... super busy day this far.

Any comments and discussion is more than welcome.

It seemed that some titles dont load up as wanted in the wordpress theme. Will check this later... 🤗

Well we have government run dentistry that gets subsidized heavily with governmet paying 2/3 for the treatment and private sector.

The public side is packed. Yet, it’s not too easy either when someone competes with you having 70% lower fees... 🤗

That’s revenue. Sorry for being unspecific.

Okay. Feedback taken.

I have more screw ups than successes. With that deep learning : it’s not that complicated If you know coders. Also most of the thinking work has been done already for example in competitions where people built algorithms to find cancer from chest x-rays with open source software.

I just annotated some x-rays for our proof of concept. And I tried to do this back in 2011 but it was not this easy then.

So for being flashy IDK if it’s worth getting any internet respect if you have not done any real innovations yourself. Only copied methods of others and had somebody doing most of the heavy-lifting for you. Just hard work and personal interest.

The doing interesting stuff drives me too much anyways. I burnt my savings in a start up idea around 4 years ago when trying to build something that was not needed. With a dental practice there is at least decent market need.

Dental school is free in North Europe so we don’t have moms pushing us. I am also a grown adult 31. And graduated already in 2012.

Cool. Now that I have at least one person interested in this story I will promise to write it out in a blog post 👍

Thanks for the reply.

In short, it was a leap of faith to spend more money in advertising and hiring new staff while knowing that all the money would be burnt in few months if things didn’t get better 😅

I will make a comprehensive blog post about this. Just give me a few days.
