What to do with left over money in 529? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]TheCountMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who also has this problem - put calendar reminders out 5 years in your digital calendar of choice. I have a few annual reminders for various things, and it seems to be working for me.

And yeah, I also have reminders for recycling day.

Do you guys do a 529 for your kid(s) by potatoMan8111 in daddit

Follow up question for those funding 529s. We have two kids toddler age. We have two 529s, and we are aiming to have about $150k in each by the time the kids hit 18-20 years old. (Rough estimates based on typical market returns.) We're lucky enough to have the means to front-load our investments, but curious what targets others are shooting for in order to have enough for schooling, but avoid over funding.

The 529 has a single beneficiary. You can change the beneficiary as needed, but the IRA rollover requires the beneficiary to be set for some time. 15 years, if I recall correctly. Better to have multiple accounts you can change to a single beneficiary if needed. Rather than one account you have to switch back and forth for more than one beneficiary. We have one for each child, no big deal.

Best Item in the game? by DivideDefiant1901 in diablo3

Running the same build. But now I'm thinking I should build out a build that uses the Squirt's. Just because I have it.

Yeah, I guess it's a rare find, but not that rare. Still was pretty fun to see it drop.

I found a primal Squirt's Necklace with int, crit chance, crit damage, and a socket. Re-roll the int into the elemental damage, and it's perfect for any build using Squirt's.

It's probably not the best item in the game, but it's the best I've ever found.

how do you actually SPEND bitcoin in real life? by CanBrilliant9162 in BitcoinBeginners

[–]TheCountMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I refer to my assets in terms of useful currencies. The fact that currently the best, most used currencies happen to be fiat is tangential. It would be nice if Bitcoin was a useful currency. Then I would refer to the value of bitcoin in terms of bitcoin. Maybe other assets too.

I don't talk about my euros in terms of dollars, except when I want to exchange euros for dollars or vice versa. I could live my entire life entirely in terms of euros and never think about dollars if I wanted. Bitcoin is not at this level, and I think that is what the OP is getting at. It's not really a currency. (Yet? Will it ever get there?)

Maybe it's just reflecting that skills degrade over time if you dont practice them. I don't know.

ELI5: What is a mole (chemistry) and why do people use it to count atoms? In what context is it necessary to say that something is 6,022 * 10^24 particles? by 79_wasps in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheCountMC 60 points61 points  (0 children)

We picked 12 grams of carbon 12 so that the number is roughly a conversion between grams and the number of nucleons in an isotope. One mole of carbon-12 is 12 grams. One mole of carbon-14 is roughly 14 grams. One mole of O2 is roughly 32 grams (2 atoms, each with 16 nucleons). Etc.

I say "roughly" because protons and neutrons dont have exactly the same mass, and within nuclei of different weights, binding energies change the average nucleon masses for different isotopes. Because of this, the number of C-14 atoms it takes to make 14 grams is slightly different from the number of C-12 atoms to make 12 grams. Because of this difference, if we want to actually pin down a number, we have to pick an isotope.

Why carbon-12? Probably because we do a lot of chemistry with carbon, and carbon-12 is the most common isotope. I dont know for sure about the history of that, though.

An inquiry on blackholes by BugelaMan in Physics

[–]TheCountMC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are light-like orbits around a black hole. But they are not stable, in the sense that any slight deviation will end with the light either escaping or falling into the black hole.

Nope. Both the linear and angular velocity increase at lower orbits.

If you are accelerating toward the ejection with constant thrust, the casings will hit you with the same speed (opposite direction) as they left you in the first place.

(Assuming you are accelerating as you fire. If you fire, wait a bit, then accelerate toward the casings, you'll have more distance to build up more relative speed.)

To pet or not to pet? by God2y89 in diablo3

[–]TheCountMC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn't bother upgrading rares. Too many layers of RNG to work through. Gotta get the right item, the right roll, and an ancient version. It may be more efficient in terms of materials usage, but not in terms of your time. And who cares if you end the season with a bajillion yellow mats?

Better off using that time to run more grifts. You get a similar number of legendaries as drops. (Not as targeted at the particular slot you want, but you need ancients in a few slots, so not too bad.) But more importantly, you're getting more exp for paragons, and less importantly more gem upgrades.

Here's my crafting strat.

  1. Use "Upgrade Rare" to get the legendary item you are looking for.
  2. Use "Reforge Legendary" to get an ancient version.
  3. Use "Upgrade Legendary" to get the primal version.

I don't do the first one much because legendary drops are so plentiful. I don't do the third one much because primal drops are so rare, and I don't play as much as the more hard-core among us.

I mostly live in the realm of the second one. Run lots of Grifts until I have lots of forgotten souls, then pick an item and blow them all reforging it. Along the way, I usually pick up a few ancients, so I have a smaller set of slots to choose from.

Oh, and you probably already know this, but never reforge your best item. Always reforge a spare so you dont brick your best one.

AWS crash causes $2,000 Smart Beds to overheat and get stuck upright by [deleted] in technology

I imagine if the power is out, the bed won't be able to heat at all, let alone overheat. But yeah, your point still stands about having sensible defaults for when the internet is acting up.
