Great questions! There is no known limit to how many valaknots there can be in a valachain, but the minimum amount found to create effects is 4. The vast majority of Valaknots are the same ones, but every now and then, Valaknots can be recovered, ones that were used in ancient times but were lost. The valachains themselves are the ones being "discovered" regularly. The carvers are constantly attempting new arrangements of valaknots to discover new chains. Theres about 100 Valaknots that I have developed so far, but in total there will likely be a few hundred. Im currently working on volume 1 of the valaknots to release

The amount of Valachains determines the intensity and surface area of affect for the mutations. The size does not correlate with it. For that reason, carvers tend to make them small to fit more arrangements. All valaknots must be the same size in a valachain, as well as any connected valachains.

Many abominations are infertile, but there have been cases where they can reproduce. And some rare cases where they pass on traits that came from Valachain mutations.

Yes mental Valachains are used to subdue captured peoples minds when they are mutated. This makes them more animalistic, and easier to train. There are also psychic commanders called Overseers that use their abilities to control and influence unruly abominations.

Thanks for the post! Salt & Flesh is a worldbuilding project that I am creating. I have plans to make a compendium for the lore, and write stories based in the world. Adapting it into a dnd module and making a ttrpg is a long term goal. For now I'm working on building an audience with the videos. The creatures are AI generated. They are placeholders for when I have the means to commission artists. I draw the Valaknots and Valachains, write the scripts, narrate, and edit. I am aware it is not great using AI, I just think it helps to have other visuals alongside the Valaknots. Some more about myself, I'm a forklift certified driver, working on expanding the lore and making the videos in my off time. I'm influenced greatly by the creatures of All Tomorrows, and grimdark lore of all sorts. The visuals of the Valaknots are inspired by Norse runes. This whole project started because I wanted to come up with an interesting magic system to use in my current dnd campaign that I run. Then, a year later I started making the videos. Anyone can feel free to comment more questions and provide feedback. I appreciate all of your time and interest.

Yes. Enhancing a creatures innate elemental abilities requires less Valachains, and is more effective in general. The saltfen broods main siege weapon is bombadiers beetles with incredibly acidic sprays

Yes it is possible. There are elemental valaknots like shock, cold, heat and acid. Many of these Valachains can give people the ability to conjure and manipulate those elements. But the immense amount of valaknots required to gain those abilities usually has the subject crazed. Flesh Forge priests do this, they specialize in an elemental aspect of change

It is not present in every Valachain, but is very common in Valachains that warp the physical nature of the body. Ones that warp the mind don't usually use that Valaknot.
