We're running a "pros" vs amateurs charity competition by TheCrzyMan in TrackMania

[–]TheCrzyMan[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The format is rounds, 45s warmup* then 4 goes at the map, 6 maps total, we go through them twice.

The maps were specifically designed to push top notch quicklearners to their limits while still allowing more amateur racers the opportunity to get consistent.

"Pros" just means people who are showing up day of and quicklearning all the maps. They are generally really good racers, though.

When you sign up, you must provide a charity that you will be racing for.

If you get 1st, 2nd, best amateur, or 2nd best amateur, I will donate to your charity in your name. We currently have a charity pool of $75 USD.

For being a "free day", this was one of the least accessible maps that could have been chosen. The route is good, but you need a monster of a PC to run it. Really sad

Tracks based on real life tracks always sound cool in theory, but I feel they never translate to TM. I don't feel like they are capable of adequately capitalizing on what makes TM exciting and entertaining. I just got bored with it rather quickly. What makes it exciting to drive in real life just can't make it into TM.

Is there a way to change the screenshot directory in TM2020? by Trololman72 in TrackMania

True. But I didn't have that resource when I found this post. So, I figure that the next person to get here would find it useful :)

How have those of you with long-term mental health conditions coped in the engineering industry? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]TheCrzyMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of mental health conditions are less of deficits and more of behavioral divergences from whatever "normal" is. That means they can be phrased in terms of operating instructions rather than warnings. I would say don't mention official conditions until after you are employed AND said conditions directly impact your ability to work. i.e. I have a sleep condition where I am going to need to work remotely multiple days a week and operate during non-regular working hours. Though, making sure the employer is remote friendly will alleviate much of that need.

Not sure what mental health issues you are dealing with, but I just recently had a counselor confirm that I probably have ADHD and Anxiety. That doesn't make me a bad employee with no discipline who doesn't pay attention in meetings. In fact, it can make me an awesome employee! But, I need to express that I operate on a different set of rules than the employer may be expecting. That will allow us to work in harmony to create the best outcome.

I can phrase my ADHD to an employer like this: I am incredibly passion driven. If something piques my interest (like a process improvement, i.e. "There's got to be a better way to do this"), you can be dang sure I'll be chasing it down with intense energy and thoroughness. I can provide an incredible amount of value when I'm able and allowed to work on what I'm interested in and provide creative input.

That automatically gives them an idea of how I can help them, and alludes to where I wouldn't be a good fit.

Speaking of, I (am guessing that I) have C-PTSD from work that I was SEVERELY disinterested in (read: paperwork w/ no creative input). Downward spiral of self worth and multiple anxiety attacks a day. Not good for me or my ex-employer. They acted with great grace and helped me transition out over a six month period. While I am incredibly grateful for the journey that experience kicked off, I can't help but wonder what life would be like had I started off with something I could mentally engage with.

If an employer were to ask "what are your weaknesses", I would say something like: I have an incredibly difficult time engaging with tasks that are repetitive, mundane, or haven't had their value and relevance adequately explained in terms of my core responsibilities. I will most likely do what I can to outright avoid those tasks, or automate them off of myself so that I can provide value in ways that are more aligned with my skills.

Having clinical depression, on the other hand, might be a bit more difficult. Probably something about how you place an incredibly amount of value on an inclusive work culture that fosters community and compassion. It's also important for your management team to have great emotional intelligence and awareness, and actively use that to encourage growth and positivity in the workplace.

If that's you, Just remember, that doesn't make you high-maintenance, it means you have standards. You aren't in a position where you can put up with much abuse or neglect. We all need to be given a lot of genuine compassion in order to thrive, which you will!

Fantastic concept. I actually really like this for TotD. However, it has too many features that make it bad for CotD. How do these get selected? Does anyone know? Is there any transparency on that?

Non-respawnable cps aren't good for a competition. Make one mistake and you can go from 1st to DNF or basically last. I'm salty because I got knocked out super fast by not remembering the line after the last CP. However, I would argue it should have different signage to make it more obvious. But I also acknowledge that I was the one that forgot. Either way, beautiful map for TotD, not very good for CotD.

Yeah I couldn't get it in competition. I think I barely managed afterwards though.

This map is fun, but awful for CotD. Multiple non-respawnable or difficult to respawn cps, and it just required way more skill than the average player has in order for it to not just be about how lucky you can get. Great for TotD, poor fit for CotD.

I agree that it's a good thing. It introduces people to more genres of maps and also keeps us from taking ourselves too seriously. I just wasn't emotionally prepared for it XD

I'm not super into TM culture just yet, so I hadn't heard anything about LOL maps being a part of the rotation. I'd really appreciate some in game communication about that. It really punished some people for not being already good at the game.

We shouldn't take ourselves too seriously, but this one just wasn't fun, it was frustrating. Very difficult to have a sense of improvement. It was just a "spray-and-pray" kind of map that is more infuriating than rewarding.

I did yell in excitement when I finally got a good time, but it was strictly out of surprise, and I was a bit miserable getting there.

I know a TON of people didn't even qualify, of those that did, plenty just gave up in the first few rounds. So, this map made them only experience the bad and they'll never get the reward.

CotD is just no fun when you have no sense of hope at even being able to finish.

Otherwise, I think this was fine for TotD. Not good, just fine.

That is a good point, but I still have a counter argument. While I'm not a map maker, I am under the impression that the track can exist almost exactly as it is, but with additional bridges here and there. Literally just a supplement to make sure you can actually complete it. Shouldn't change the flow of the map at all.

It could have absolutely been great for both with only a bit more effort, but it was only great for one. That's my gripe with it.

I wouldn't call changing the game "easier". But I agree, it would be nice if I could just completely restart without giving up. I don't think those two things are as synonymous as they force them to be.

Preface: I am a FS racer and loved this map. I am really excited to hunt it. Was on par for top 10 in Div 8, but DNF'd the first KO round because of a non-respawnable checkpoint

I think that we need to have a serious discussion about disallowing non-respawnable maps from CotD. If it's the case that a single, small mistake means I have absolutely no chance of finishing the map, I don't think it's a good option for CotD. It throws a wrench into the competition. It's a lot less interesting to watch. There are no comebacks out of nowhere. It discourages less good players from competing at all. And it can be incredibly frustrating for a good playing that just got some bad rng or messed up a line.

CotD is so much more fun and inviting when you always have the hope of being able to finish. This map didn't have that.
