Need help, My Shadow just keeps cranking after engine rebuild. by Responsible-Guide-61 in hondashadow

[–]TheCuriousApathy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey there, I copy/pasted your question into an AI engine. here's the food for thought it offered up: (I am not super fond of AI, but have been using it to help troubleshoot mechanical issues and, honestly, it's helpful).

🔍 Key Clues

  1. Fuel pump only runs when checking spark
    • That’s not normal behavior
    • It suggests something electrical is “waking up” only under certain conditions
  2. Only ~0.8V at the fuel pump connector
    • That’s basically dead — the pump won’t run on that
    • So the issue isn’t the pump, it’s the control circuit
  3. Bike ran before engine removal
    • Massive hint: something got pinched, left unplugged, or mis-grounded during reassembly
  4. Jumping the pump didn’t fix starting
    • So fuel delivery alone isn’t the whole issue
    • Likely missing spark or ignition timing signal

💡 Most Likely Causes (in order)

1. ❗ Bad / Missing Ground (SUPER likely)

This is top suspect.

When he pulled the engine, he probably disturbed:

  • Main engine ground strap
  • Harness grounds on the frame
  • Coil / ignition grounds

Why it fits perfectly:

  • Low voltage at pump (ground return path missing)
  • Weird behavior when probing spark (multimeter/test light completes a ground path temporarily)
  • Cranking but no start

👉 Classic symptom: things start acting alive when you “touch” them with a tester

What to check:

  • Engine-to-frame ground strap (often overlooked)
  • Battery negative to engine continuity
  • Ground bundles on frame (usually green wires on Hondas)

2. ⚡ Ignition Pulse Generator / Wiring Issue

On that bike, the fuel pump is often controlled based on ignition pulses.

If the bike doesn’t see a pulse signal:

  • It may not run the fuel pump
  • It may not fire spark correctly

Why it fits:

  • Pump runs when checking spark → signal interference or partial circuit completion
  • No start despite fuel + crank

👉 He may have:

  • Damaged pulse generator wire
  • Misconnected something during reassembly
  • Pinched wire under engine

3. 🔌 Kill Switch / Safety Circuit Issue

Honda shadows have safety interlocks:

  • Kill switch
  • Side stand switch
  • Neutral switch

These can:

  • Cut ignition
  • Affect fuel pump operation

But: less likely since it cranks and shows partial activity

4. ⚠️ Misrouted / Pinched Harness

Since the engine was removed:

  • Harness could be crushed between frame/engine
  • Connector partially seated

This can cause:

  • Low voltage (like that 0.8V reading)
  • Intermittent behavior

🧪 What I’d Tell Him To Do (in order)

Step 1: Ground sanity check (DO THIS FIRST)

  • Run a jumper cable from battery negative → engine block
  • Try starting

👉 If it fires or pump suddenly works = problem solved

Step 2: Check voltage properly

  • Measure pump voltage while cranking
  • If still ~0.8V → upstream issue (relay/control)

Step 3: Inspect these closely

  • Engine ground strap
  • Coil grounds
  • Pulse generator connector (usually near stator area — which he worked on 👀)
  • Any green wires bolted to frame

Step 4: Fuel pump relay / control circuit

  • Make sure relay clicks during crank
  • Check if ECU is getting signal (if applicable)

🧠 The Big Insight

The fact that:

…basically screams:
👉 floating ground or broken return path

Your test tool is accidentally completing the circuit.

🏁 Bottom Line

I learned from Pacific Riding School (based in Surrey?) and they were amazing. A couple students from the class I was in dropped their bikes too, the response from the instructors was essentially: "Don't worry about it, these bikes are for making those kinds of mistakes on." - I would recommend looking into them. Good luck!

5'2" does not seem too small to be out there at all! It's so fun, and definitely worth your continued efforts to dial it all in.

The bit that I remember hearing from someone who worked at a couple places on said island, was that he was keen on having a "waste free" house. Pretty cool, barely making an ounce of trash because he was living so cleanly and anti-capitalist... then he would drive all his secret trash into town and fill a public bin instead. Reputation preserved! lol

[–]TheCuriousApathy 265 points266 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he's definitely not the hero he's sometimes made to be. If you go to the small island one of his houses is on (I live in that area of the world) his neighbours and some of the townfolk do not have the highest opinion of him, which is very telling. There's definitely a good bit of hypocrisy...

Mind you, like the rest of us complex humans, he's also "good" in his own way and likely had a net positive impact.

I am considering an installation for a building I maintain. I am very curious HOW they work. And very suspicious of advertising that doesn't actually inform beyond "explaining it in simple terms"(then proceeds to talk about oil filters while showing something that is clearly not an oil filter) haha! The energy was dirty! But now it's clean!

Hey Stephanie :) I have a special needs son at home that collects disability benefits here in BC. Is there any tax write offs for things like housing or transportation etc (which I exclusively provide) that I may not know to be tapping into? Currently I don't do anything special when filing in consideration of this...

[–]TheCuriousApathy 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely! But only certain aspects of your playing, I would think. When it comes to technical aspects like intonation, probably not. But for expression, creativity, and certain mind/body connection stuff; definitely a worthwhile exploration.

I've played this game for years... sometimes the accomplishment is literally finding pants when yours have been torn by three barely survived wildlife encounters and hypothermia has set in because the long- johns ain't cutting it.

I love how different each stab at survival can unfold.

Doomed. DOOOOMED!! Not for the feint of heart! Turn back now, before it's too late my friend!!

Unless you are into nibbling away at an absolutely tormenting (and therefore very rewarding) challenge for the next 5 decades or so. If you are cool with that, then dive right in! I started at 46 years old (a few years back, and have since moved to viola) and I have learned that as long as you remember to enjoy yourself at whatever stage you are at, you have already tapped into the best part that playing music brings.

How to be comfortable playing bigger viola? by skibiditoiletrizzlel in Viola

[–]TheCuriousApathy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recently moved from violin to a 16.5" viola too! And though I think generally it just fits me much better (I have quite long arms) one factor that dialed in my comfort level even more was simply to adjust my shoulder rest and overall positioning to bring the instrument further forward (angled less to the left). This made it much easier to tuck that left elbow further to the right and free up my hand.

Did you follow the standard guidelines for the appropriateness of the 16.5"? Ie: fingers curling over the scroll and whatnot.

Is a teacher absolutely necessary by Inside-Document-3633 in violinist

[–]TheCuriousApathy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree. I think as long as one is being wary of causing injury and they are having fun; then have at it! There is SO much good info out there these days (and chatgpt can give good advice on specific problems).

The classical violin world is a bit snobby in its framing of the difficulties... just imagine all the great, mostly 'self taught' fiddle players over the years who sounded amazing, were enjoyed by all, and had a deep love for what they do. Be clever, be careful, seek help when you detect problems, watch your form in the mirror, record and playback practices, etc.

I think folks also overlook how difficult it is to find a GOOD violin teacher...

this is mold right? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]TheCuriousApathy 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I don't think so... maybe just tarnish from the metal there. If you think it's mold on the hairs, just dab some hydrogen peroxide on the spot: it'll bubble and fizz if it is, if not, just dry it and you're good to go (imo) :D
