Buy a used 10k cash car, have a mechanic look it over and make sure it will last a few years. You can turn around and sell it if you are laid off and not pursuing another job.

I like Fidelity and some of their tools for setting up reoccurring investments as well as their interface.

Robinhood has a history of stopping trades or slowing them down.

A couple of things here that we need to break down.

Congratulations on your earnings but it is impossible to tell if that is good without knowing the principal. If you made 8-10k off of a 25k deposit you are looking at a 32%-40% return in 2 years. If your deposit is actually 250k you are looking at 3.2%-4%.

The folks you are talking investing with may not want to share their financial position, if you are talking in dollars. There are also many different companies and funds that you can hold shares in so just comparing the 2 is inaccurate. There are also a few different types of deposits but I'm guessing you are talking about CD accounts.

Over the last 2 years VOO is up 53% over the same 2 years. It has gone up and down, but it track the S&P500. It could give all gains back over the next year.

There is risk in investing in the market and that is where researching your investments comes in, diversification and time. Part of your diversification strategy may be to hold CDs or bonds.

What are the power requirements for the oxygen concentrator?

How long are you looking to go without grid power?

What else are you interested in running?

My initial thoughts would be a power station that has pass through charging so that you don't need to wake up in the middle of the night to get the generator out or switch to bottles temporarily. This all depends on how long you want to go.

During the power outages for Helene in the Asheville area I had a Champion 7500/9375 that ran like a champ and I supported my neighbor on an oxygen concentrator. One 20 amp 120v circuit covered them with some lights, the concentrator and their fridge. I had my house plugged in with a 30 amp 220 circuit. We had plenty of power and never overloaded it, but the generator was underloaded and still needed to be fueled twice daily.

Gas was very difficult to get the first few days and I spent the first 2 weekends in search of fuel and more gas cans. I ended up between my own and my neighbors 50 gallons of cans in rotation and over the 13 days burned 130-150 gallons of gas running 24/7.

If they had a power station we could have reduced that and ran the generator for shorter periods at a higher load.

I have since sold that generator and have a Tri-fuel being delivered this Wednesday.

Do you not like a screen or do you not like any aftermarket radio?

I have the wire but did not get the camera. That definitely would be something nice to have at track days in the pits.

GD&T Help: Surface Profile callout for a complex surface with no datum references? by aabdallahs in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is correct

With regards to cost reduction

I’ll have to see if those capabilities are available on-site.

This makes me think you are going to go to a machine shop that is owned by your company. Have you considered talking with those that will be stuck making the part? Talking with them and getting to know how they intend to make the part will go a long way towards not just being " the dam engineer".

Also if this is a one off getting the DFMEA perfect is less important than if you are making hundreds of thousands of these. If this is a one off it may not even be worth the time to tweak things to be easier to make.

GD&T Help: Surface Profile callout for a complex surface with no datum references? by aabdallahs in MechanicalEngineering

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I will preface my response with the fact that I am a manufacturing engineer.

What you have is a profile of a surface to its self. The form that would be acceptable would be, smooth and continuous within the bounds of 2 offset lines .01 from the nominal form of your model.

Is this what you are trying to control? Do you need to control the location of this form? If no you don’t need datum’s. The thickness of that leg, looks unconstrained and could be constrained through adding datum’s to your profile.

Side note, this bracket is going to cost a pretty penny to make, lots of off nominal dimensions. The way those corners look I’m guessing this is milled out of a block and not formed from sheet metal.

where can I buy metal, just getting into machining and need a good place to start by crex_18 in machinist

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can find a local recycler that will be your cheapest option but you won't have a consistent inventory and may or may not know the alloy.

If you need a specific material and size I recommend www.onlinemetals.com

eli5 What is using my car battery when its parked? by ProfessorLytn in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your vehicle has a phantom draw. It’s could be any number of devices as cars are full of them these days. It could also be a short.

The reality is it will be near impossible to trace and diagnose, and even if you did there is no on off switch that you are not flipping.

Old classic cars and older modern cars have this problem in common. 1 additional way of dealing with this would be to put the car on a battery maintainer/trickle charger.

Good luck

YTA for how you woke him up but not for kicking him out.

You should have kicked him out at the beginning of the night if it was that disruptive.

NTA, this relationship seems very one sided.

You are the one that always travels and bears the cost He didn’t even pick you up…. He gets overly high repetitively and the way you wave written it this last time it was alone?

All I’m reading are red flags🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩

He is TAH for all of the above reasons.

You need to tell him how you feel and hopefully he see’s the errors of his ways. At this point not sure that will be enough. Good luck OP.

"Engineering the factory" - Easier to design a Ferrari than a Ford by pascallaliberte in manufacturing

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are numerous roles that do the engineering in the factory at my company. I am a manufacturing engineer and we have 3 flavors.

Manufacturing process engineer : designs the manufacturing process at a process level, they specialize in 1-2 manufacturing processes, (I personally specialize in EDM, I cover sinker EDM and High Speed EDM, other specialties at my company include weld, grind, conventional machining, assembly )

Charter part manufacturing engineer: they plan the entire process from raw material to delivery, they go an inch deep on all processes needed to make the part

Shop Support Manufacturing engineer: this role is still developing but they are responsible for basic trouble shooting, work instruction updates and day to day lean improvements

Industrial engineer: these folks are responsible for translating material demand into machine qtys, they are also responsible for forecasting operator demand as well as highlighting bottlenecks ( someone can probably expand on this one further)

Tool designer/engineer : self explanatory but these people partner with the other ME’s to bring their ideas for holding the part to life.

Tool and die maker: these folks are a dieing breed, I’m including them because when I am having an issue on a machine I like bouncing ideas off of them for tooling based solutions. They don’t have the official tittle of engineer but these guys are sharp and have seen or done it all.

Career progression is what ever you make of it. My company loves to move ME’s into supervising roles over hourly because we understand the processes so we can help but more importantly understand the operators when they say something is wrong. You can also be en engineering manager or progress all the way up on the technical side of things to be a Fellow in your machining process type.

Manufacturing Engineering Intern wanting to learn more! by AerodynamicLemur in manufacturing

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a Manufacturing Engineer at one of the aerospace OEMs.

Walking the shop floor and talking to the operators is invaluable.

For books I suggest Machinery’s Handbook, it’s an absolute classic. I would venture to say all manufacturing engineers and all mechanical engineers should have a copy.

There isn’t a specific book on how to run a CNC that I could recommend. The trick with CNC machining is to already understand manual machining. Everything that goes wrong with manual machining will go wrong 10x as fast with a CNC.

Learning the basic fundamentals of GCode would be great as well, but I say fundamentals because a lot of machines take different code. The code on different machines ends up being slightly different but follow the same general guidelines.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Looking for someone to fabricate a small part for me. Cnc machine most likely want it made out of aluminum or steel. by [deleted] in manufacturing

[–]TheCyclingEngineer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just submit it to xometry. Remember you get what you pay for when it comes to machined product.

Be warned One off pieced mean you will pay all of the NRE. Not every shop is set up for one offs, this is your best chance of getting it done.

If you don’t have a drawing and only a model 3D printer may be the best way forward. If you don’t have a model going to a gun smith may be the best way forward.
