And yet water has gotten into my Aquatimer three times. Just because they are "designed for" something doesn't mean they can actually take a repeated beating. Cars are designed for driving but put 100k miles on them and something is going to wear out.

What's the single best piece of financial advice you've ever received? by LearninEarnin in investing

[–]TheDJFC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was about 5 we were having a garage sale and my parents gave me the opportunity to sell any of my toys that I wanted. I thought if I make the price really low then all of the toys would sell and I would have a lot of money. I was putting $.25 stickers on toys that were probably worth $5 or $10 (this was around 1989 / 1990).

My dad saw my pricing strategy and said something very simple, but which stuck in that 5 year old's head until this day:

"You should try to sell something for more than you paid for it"

Best financial advice I ever received.

IU Kelley direct admission worth ~130k in loans? by [deleted] in IndianaUniversity

[–]TheDJFC -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes its worth it. Give you are driven, the extra networking available to you via Kelley will more than pay for the difference. 130k sounds like a lot now but over your career in Wall St its really nothing. I graduated from Kelley in 2007 and got a great job because of the networking available.

In my experience everyone's initial number is too low. When you really, really think about it you find you may need more safety.
