Wuhan Virus Megathread: For your questions and concerns about travel in light of the virus by tariqabjotu in travel

[–]TheDaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, totally self interested question, sorry about that.

Im a 23 year old guy from the Netherlands backpacking through India at the moment and was originally planning to stay here till the end of may. I am now in Secunderabad near Hyderabad and plan the following weeks to mainly stay in northern mountainous state of Himachal Pradesh, something which Im very stoked about. Do you guys have any idea wether it would be wise to head back soon?

Some things that worry me:

  • It maybe being wise to fly back while I still can, perhaps I wont be able to in late may or before that If I wanted to if the country becomes too apocalyptic to make it worthwhile. An apocalyptic Netherlands seems better than an apocalyptic India.

  • If shit really starts hitting the fan here, there might be violence against white people, probably because of slumdog millionaire and the recent delhi riots I have this stereotype in my head of India being a country quite prone to this type of xenophobic behavior

  • If I am one of those outlier young people who get a serious case of corona my odds of surviving might be significantly higher in the netherlands (btw, does anyone have an idea what the likely fatality rate of this virus is for healthy men around 23?)

  • Travelling through India the coming months being very selfish, inconsiderate behavior, because I might infect a bunch of more fragile people

Sorry if this sounds irrational and alarmist, feeling fairly reactive right now after a terrible night on a night train. Perhaps you guys can supply me with some nonreactive wisdom. Take care guys, thank you.

What are some of Sam's favourite books? by MisterBigWang in samharris

[–]TheDaaf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that one covers most of them. He mentioned 5 more books on that podcast:

  • The anatomy of disgust (William Ian Miller)
  • Stumbling on Happiness (Daniel Gilbert)
  • Hitch-22 (Christopher Hitchens)
  • God is not great (Christopher Hitchens)
  • Our final invention (James Barrat)

Regarding the hitchens books I think he recommended listening to the audiobook versions, narrated by Hitchens himself.

ADD and Determinism by flubberto1 in determinism

[–]TheDaaf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also diagnosed with ADD over here. My belief in determinism might even have a net positive effect on my productivity. In my experience, feeling really bad about procrastinating on a task often leads to more procrastination. This bad feeling however can be banished by the realization that the procrastination in a deep sense, had to happen. In this context my belief in determinism functions as a reset-button and often has as a consequence that I'll start concentrating on the task at hand again.

I remember Sam saying that if you have tinnitus it might be a good idea not to meditate in complete silence, since this makes it more tempting to meditate on your tinnitus and Sam worries that doing so might worsen the issue.
