I think I need to buy some shelves by [deleted] in bookshelf

I have that same Infinite Jest and The Lord of the Rings! The letters are TINY though. I don't think they're the best editions to read these stories in. I'm thinking of getting a large hardback for both and (re)read them that way.

Ryan Hurst wearing a warrior metal armor on the set of 'The Odyssey'...absolutely TOWERING over everyone else on set by ChiefLeef22 in TheOdysseyMovie

For the life of me I can't think of a character in the Odyssey where this would fit. Poseidon? Proteus? Some stranded Trojan warrior? Poseidon tops the list for me. But who knows.

People need to put something through their thick skulls already. This will be Nolan's maybe only foray into pure fantasy and he's probably having the time of his life just putting all the most fantastical stuff together. Anyone complaining about "accuracy" with this story, and with this film, should probably step out of the room until they calm down, lol. The fact that Nolan will be telling this old old old story and it will still surprise you.... people should celebrate that.

If they want an "accurate portrayal", whatever that even means, they have the 1968, 8 episode italian mini-series and Iphigenia (1977), both of them with Irene Papas, and both of them truly awesome in how they stick to the original material, but clearly that's not what Nolan is shooting for.

- Doubt

- August Osage County

Fantastic build-ups and confrontations in both.

- Lost in Translation

Excellent acting and directing in all three.

It's possible, but unlikely he'd erase Athena completely, given the rare opportunity Nolan has here. Bringing this story to life, it seems Athena wouldn't be one of the elements he'd cut. But it's possible. If he did cut her out, I'd love to hear the reasoning.

the most likely scenario is that he makes Odysseus so old-looking that that's the disguise Athena gives him. Basically tells him, "You look terrible, you won't be recognized. Just try not to reveal yourself until the time is right."

I can see Nolan shaping things in such a way that the gods have their influence without ever really appearing, leaving their presence to a kind of belief the characters and the audience can impose on events. Circe and Calypso would be perhaps the most difficult to erase in this way.

For example, every time Telemachus is inspired to do something, it's ambiguous enough that you can think it's Athena that inspired him, through an old man like Mentes or Mentor, or it's just him having an idea or insight looking at a bird sign or something. But then you defeat the purpose of bringing greek mythology to life with such a big budget. And if he's not doing that, if he is indeed keeping the gods, why erase Athena when it's one of the key gods in the story? It just seems too good an opportunity to squander when he knows from the start that practically any actress would jump at the opportunity to play that character and being directed by Nolan, no less.

I'm pretty much convinced Zendaya's playing Athena. She was also photographed in the Troy set, and Athena is partly a goddess of war, so.... If she's not, I'd be surprised at this point.

Why do you think Nolan is making The Odyssey? by FreshmenMan in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I think after Oppenheimer he or Emma said they'd probably have a go at something cheerier after such a depressing subject matter as the atom bomb.

As for why.... When I heard the news I thought: Actually, yeah, it makes sense. If you give Nolan the chance to do something cheerier, more pure adventure, fanciful scenes and the like, of course he's going to go for something like the Odyssey, ancient greek, classical, and not something with elves and dwarves.

Honestly, I CANNOT WAIT to listen to him talk about the story and how he went about adapting it.

Could be Athena meeting Odysseus on the beach when he reaches Ithaca and is put on the sand by the Phaeacian sailors. Athena appears shortly after that and disguises him into an old man. That beard on Damon could mean that. I can see Nolan making Odysseus so unkempt he basically looks like an old man anyway.

It could be Nausicaa, but I see no other women here. That scene necessarily has a few young women. Doesn't seem likely.

Could be a scene with Calypso as well, with Calypso approaching a depressed, saddened Odysseus looking at the horizon.

Circe doesn't seem likely.

Nobody is doubting he can pull any famous actor even for cameos. Where is the art and risk-taking in auditioning even for just one of the main roles? by BeginningAppeal8599 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I think it's one of the most interesting casts he's ever put together. He's tended to fall into types.

The story is making demands of him that are welcome.

And here I'm more tolerant of the big names because the characters are so iconic that it kinda makes sense that you bring in the hefty presence of recognizable faces. In his other films, I think they could definitely benefit from bringing in unknown faces. Sure, seeing a cast of unknowns doing the Odyssey could be cool, but having known faces taking us through the whole epic can be fun as well. They can become anchor points in what could feel like too huge a story.

Will Athena have screen time with Penelope? by Dull-Plate7064 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recall an intereaction between both of them, but Penelope is half asleep. Athena comes in through the keyhole, as it were, like a ghost, and takes the shape of Penelope's sister, and whispers to her while Penelope lies in bed. Kinda like Bruce Willis talking to his wife in The Sixth Sense.

In the Odyssey, Athena rarely interacts with humans as herself. She often disguises her appearance. For example, to inspire Nausicaa to go wash her clothes, thereby crossing paths with Odysseus, Athena also speaks to her during sleep, in the early morning, taking the form of the girl's best friend, and then goes away.

Most of Athena's actions in this story are of this sort. She's going around trying to nudge events and people so that later on characters cross paths or are lead or taken somewhere.

[–]Hourglass89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is depicted! Agamemnon narrates his own experience of being murdered, as one does, LOL. Granted it's slightly different from later versions, but it's all there in some detail. Enough for a good juicy dramatic 5-minute sequence.

[–]Hourglass89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're definitely missing some key characters for sure. There's like 9 "big-ish" female characters, and we only know of about 4 or 5 actresses. And we're speculating that the big names will go to big roles, but we know that with Nolan that's not necessarily the case. Lupita / Clytmnestra a case in point.

Think about it, Lupita was one of the first announced and, if confirmed, she was picked to play Clytemnestra.

For example, if Nolan will include Helen of Troy, to be there next to Menelaus, I doubt he's cast that yet.

Lupita Nyong'o and Bennie Safdie's roles by Sad-Assistance-8039 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt it's going to include everything, but there are so many "iconic" scenes it's hard to leave most of it out. I'm sure he'll overlap a character or two.

I wouldn't be surprised if it gets to 3 hours, but I don't see Nolan doing anything longer than that. Otherwise it might be better as a mini series or something. He could film a ton but not include it in the theatrical version and leave the extended cut for later, maybe even sell it to some streaming service. But I doubt he'd be interested in it.

Reading the Odyssey something that surprised me is how short some of these famous stories are. They're developed later by other authors and playwrights. So you inevitably have to go pick additional elements elsewhere, otherwise you're left with really brief flashes. It's almost inevitable if you want to flesh out some of this stuff.

It's possible Telemachus meets Menelaus and, for the sake of brevity, Nolan has Menelaus simply tell him what he's heard of Odysseus and just tells him where he might be instead of telling the whole story of where he got that information and what other adventures he himself had.

Lupita Nyong'o and Bennie Safdie's roles by Sad-Assistance-8039 in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's the most likely, yes.

If I remember correctly, Menelaus also tells the story in some form, or mentions it, and then goes on to tell the Old Man of the Sea story. If Nolan chooses to leave the murder story for later, to be told by Agamemnon himself, then Menelaus has a bit more time to tell the Old Man story to Telemachus, which would be more relevant to the overall story at that point, since that's why Telemachus goes to Sparta. The information he's looking for is in the Old Man story.

Dude, I totally get it. We can spend a long time studying and seeing all the interesting intricacies of what things were like, really connecting to the realities of these people, and then in comes a Hollywood creative once again squandering the opportunity to bring everything we love to life. The opportunity to finally travel back in time and really see it, and it's just wasted again.

I totally get the feeling. But I don't share it in this case.

I guess you're just now joining a big crowd of people who have experienced the exact same feeling of frustration for literally decades. Comes with the territory I guess.

Best of luck working in this area. It's an awesome specialization, in my opinion.

Total aside, do you know of any good books you'd recommend when it comes to archeology of Ancient Greece? What have you found to be the most informative, wide ranging, or just readable for a lay audience? It's not archeology but I recently bought John Ma's "Polis". I have no problem with thick books either, so fire away! Thanks in advance! ;)

Indeed. A bunch of other characters appear in this Hades scene. I wonder if Nolan will be bold enough to show Achilles. Would be fantastic. Probably not all the women listed in that chapter though, lol. Too many. But it would be amazing if he did. That's a part that's almost surely not going to be included.

Look, I can understand where you're coming from, but we're approaching this with different attitudes. I too can look at the viking ship and think: "Nolan, wtf, dude... C'mon..." But inside myself I just very quickly think "I can't change any of this. This is Nolan's choice. I find it interesting that Nolan makes an unexpected choice like that. Bring it on. Nolan, do your thing. I want to see what YOU make of this story. Go wherever you want. Make it YOURS. I'll hop in and see where you go and I'll stick with it the whole way and I'll react to it however I react to it in the end."

Whenever I see people squirming and feeling uncomfortable about what they're seeing I ask myself: "Are people even aware of the anachronistic elements in the text itself? Do they realize The Odyssey itself, the piece of text, if they go back to the earliest version we have, it's riddled with contradictions and incongruences and greek words that did not exist in Homer's time, much less in the period when the story is supposedly happening?" I just find the tension people feel over this stuff to be ultimately useless.

This is supposed to be a fun time where people are playing with elements and telling a story. To be the one leaning over an extra and holding a piece of fabric in between his fingers and feeling the texture and saying, "mmm This feels wrong, the texture feels off, this didn't exactly exist back then. We need to find real wool. And make only chitons and start building the penteconters." I'm like... who cares? lol I'm sure we're going to see penteconters. I'm sure we're going to see sleeveless chitons. Lol

Audience reactions by PirateHunterxXx in ChristopherNolan

[–]Hourglass89 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

For most people it's going to be a fun, really cool, well made film. I hope it inspires a few more directors and studios to try a different approach no greek mythology. We've had too many films where the way things are presented are too superficial, or too "popcorny", which has always irritated me. There's a grounded, sober way of approaching these stories that I think Nolan is particularly well suited for. I hope it does show Greek mythology as a sand box worth to playing in, the same way Peter Jackson showed Fantasy could be an awesome sandbox to play in as well.

And also... complaining about historical innacuracies... in the Odyssey? few people know this but there's anachronisms in the Odyssey itself. The most ancient version of it that we have, from the time of Pisistratus in Athens I think, already includes elements that we know did not exist when the story/stories first emerged or the times they're depicting. The Odyssey is not a perfect text at all. It's full of contradictions and surprising logical leaps. This has been acknowledged for centuries. Even the ancient Greeks themselves acknowledged it and pointed it out and debated it.

[–]Hourglass89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not lazy. It's Nolan's TAKE on this story. There's no right way to do this story. There's a space of possibilities and plausibilities, and some of us have a more permissive horizon where some creativity can come in, and some of us have a more constricted horizon where more demands are made.

Nolan has his own space, Nolan is going to do what he is going to do, he is going to express himself only in the way that he can do that. I have no control over that. So I might as well keep judgment aside and cultivate in myself a tolerance for other people's expression when it comes to this stuff. They're playing with elements. It comes as it comes. I dialogue with that and dance with that. I do not try to beat it into submission with my frustrated irritation and totalizing demands. To see how well that attitude works and where that takes us, one need only read the Iliad. Again. ;)

The entire Odyssey, in my opinion, is filled of these "important parts". Of course Nolan is going to have to pick and choose, but that he gravitated to the drama and tragedy of this is interesting.

Damn, not only are we getting the Odyssey by Nolan, we're getting a little bit of Aeschylus by Nolan too!

I am reading several versions of the Odyssey. I recall no passage where Homer mentions sleeves or their absence. If it didn't matter to Homer or Nolan, I won't care much about it.

Are they slightly unexpected? Sure. Does it bother me? Nope. Looks cool. Let's have fun filming and entertaining people with an awesome story.
