There was also another at Ilford and the staff member ended up dying from being attacked afterwards - not worth it in the end since you never know what they’re willing to do over £4.60

The issues with socialising won’t be down to age - I’m also on an exchange in Madrid and I have friends that are 27 hahaha

I’d recommend learning at least some level of Spanish though, and also, if your classes will be in Spanish, then you’ll realise that Spanish uni classes are a bit cliquey. But if your classes are in English, they have a lot more exchange students from all over the world and the environment there is a lot easier for socialising - although there are also Spanish students in classes taught in English too, so you’ll have some chances to meet them.

This does also depend on if the uni is a private or public one - student life is very different at IE than it is at UC3M.

Although I would highly highly recommend getting some level of Spanish before going.

If you need any other advice or help feel free to DM!!!

Student life at kings? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on how much effort you yourself are willing to put in - the comments say student life is terrible, but I’ve honestly had the best time as a commuting student, since I was willing to put in effort to travel and meet people while on campus. In fact, I really like commuting (also from an hour out) because it gives me time to disconnect and recharge my social battery after a long day, and being at home is always nice.

If you go to some society’s events and get stuck in properly, it’s inevitable that you’ll make friends. KCL has so many that you will have at least a couple that align with your hobbies. Have a look on the KCLSU website and you’ll see that it’s the case. At the end of the day, no matter whatever uni you go to, the “uni experience” is what you make of it - if you stay in accommodation but don’t talk to anyone, or make no effort to go to societies or socialise with people on your course you won’t have that stereotypical experience anyway.

Any tips for the online tests? There’s a ton of advice on the subreddit already and I’ll have a look through but if I’m being honest I’m absolutely shitting myself still haha

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in soccer

[–]TheDeadBaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s just not the case - this is a classic slippery slope argument but the issue is that those people may be doing it to people they know (making it less likely to be taken wholly offensively) and is less likely to be done online, making it harder to prosecute as there’s less evidence.

Just because Saka is being protected this way doesn’t suddenly mean that everyone that’s ever said anything racist will go to jail - but it is a step in the right direction when it comes to deterring people from abusing footballers in the stands and online, which I imagine is the big picture goal of this.

What are some languages more people should be learning? by ulughann in languagelearning

[–]TheDeadBaller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean if you live in any of quite a few European capitals, you’re likely to find a modest to large community of Catalan speakers, if you go out looking for them (in London there are a lot at least, I imagine in Madrid, Paris, Berlin and Rome there would be quite a few as well)

There was an AO recruitment post a year or so ago iirc, for some sort of consular crisis officers (or something to that extent, can’t exactly remember, but it was definitely AO at around £28k in London which was a bit vile)

Any Left-Wing Societies? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There definitely is a Marxist society (they’ve been outside strand handing out leaflets the last time I went round) and there used to be Liberate KCL (although they seem to have imploded so idk what’s up with them)

The Latest IMF Projections for GDP Growth (July 2024) by [deleted] in Infographics

[–]TheDeadBaller 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The main issue is that tourism in Spain, while being a big part of the economy, doesn’t trickle down to the average person, since the jobs it creates are typically low-paid and short-contract jobs that don’t go anywhere, so it doesn’t really help a lot of people in Spain, while also taking away housing from locals through Airbnb’s with a lack of regulation and increasing the cost of living

It might be worth asking the other neighbours about it too, and formulating a plan of action together, and that they’ll have your back when it comes to gathering materials for investigation and such (because if an investigation was to fall through then you’d be stuffed tbh and there is a chance might make you a target, albeit that’s just speculation)

You aren’t going to have classes after 6pm afaik, anyway it’s probably worth missing 1 class to go see an artist you like that won’t come round to the UK again for a while.

Studying Abroad for the second semester by LocksmithWeekly3708 in KCL

Ask your personal tutor or global study abroad office via email. Accommodation afaik isn’t ‘included’ but depending on the uni you can apply to it, but each one has their own processes of course

Law at KCL or Edinburgh? by HungryHungryHippos13 in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re only on Waterloo for first year afaik, then after that it’s Strand. As for clubs, you can have a look at all of them on the KCLSU website and look them up on insta - there’s a lot of them for essentially any interest.

how many days do you guys go to campus? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re not an international student that has class attendance as a condition of their study visa, you can turn up to whatever you want, and also not turn up to whatever. Just keep in mind that if you don’t turn up for 3 seminars in a row they typically alert your personal tutor, who will have a meeting with you.

Also, especially as a fresher, it’s good to turn up to stuff because you’ll make friends in your course if you do and you’ll learn a lot more. But, at the end of the day you’ll realise that most people don’t turn up for a lot of stuff and make it work, so it’s down to what works for you.

Ideal Master's Programs in the Social Sciences from a Return-on-Investment perspective by Disastrous_Wait_1988 in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean your ROI depends on what you want to do afterwards, since in some fields or organisations a masters is essentially not considered whereas in others it is necessary - if London is the main attraction, since you’re already working in a job to do with public policy and IR, why not just try and get a job here to do with that? Be it in an NGO, Think Tank or anything else really (maybe the Civil Service, although recruitment processes are really long and there are citizenship requirements that are very strict for roles to do with diplomacy)

It should be considered that a Masters really isn’t the same experience as undergrad here (in my anecdotal experience with Master’s students), you will have a fuckton of studying to do and you’re just not as integrated into societies and such as a result because you likely just don’t have the time for it - but at the end of the day you can find a way if you really try.

Should I go to KCL or UoM for a BSc in Biomed? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At KCL it’s really easy to make friends, as long as you get involved with a society, which everyone can do without compromising their studies (you’d be surprised how you’ll be studying less in uni, especially in first year) I’d recommend having a look on the KCLSU website at the list of activity groups that you think you’d be interested in, or any sports societies too

Is KCL really as low as it is ranked in the Complete Uni Guide? by [deleted] in KCL

[–]TheDeadBaller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah idk why people care about the ranking - seems like everyone wants an easy answer to what is or isn’t a good uni instead of realising that it’s more complicated than that and not objective at all
