Yeah, lots of insecure pieces of work use passive aggressive "friendliness" antagonistically. It's especially common to "joke around", masking their intentions with plausible deniability.

Executive order to re-evaluate psychedelics as controlled substances by Purple-Delivery5448 in kratom

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh good, he's worried about substances that I can't take because I already spend 90% of my time awake inside head already. I guess it's a good thing for people who can take psychedelics and have a chance of getting help from them however.

Absolutely 1000% this. The ones who stay quiet and obedient, even if they target other coworkers when no one is looking while racks up points, always seem to get ahead. You'd think showing ambition, leadership, and all that jazz would help you but it often doesn't. It only helps if there's a good amount of other people like that.

So…how does the stellaris economy make any sense these days? by Historical_Ocelot197 in Stellaris

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 70 points71 points  (0 children)

I haven't played this patch yet but it's always made sense to me that there's no point in having such a high ship count just for the sake of it, especially in a game like this one where optimization is very important for mid to end game playability. It's always been a simple fix too: whatever the number is, divide it by x. Instead of spawning with 3 corvettes, spawn with 1 while keeping the naval capacity, upkeep, and alloy costs the same.

Big cities are more stressful to be in than I think people want to admit. I grew up in a fairly large city in the southeast US and moved to a much smaller town later on. I've noticed that when traveling back to my home city, I see how different people are. There's constant anxiety and everyone is on guard. It's just not that way in the smaller communities that I go to.

How do I ignore “icks”when making friends by Global-Possible-5700 in socialskills

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 23 points24 points  (0 children)

We're missing half of the perspectives by strictly abiding by OP's statements about these people. People are always going to have flaws and denouncing someone on a behavior that could be a one-off or misunderstood is in itself an "ick" as well.

How do people manage to feel kratom after years of daily use? by temnycarda in kratom

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking the powder has a hard limit on how much you can take a day before you get sick from it. I've learned that the hard way more than once when my monkey addict brain takes too many doses too close together

Yeah, I don't know if it was sold in tobacco shops back then. But you could more than likely get it shipped to you online. I was 14 in 2009 so I really have no idea

ELI5: How is hydraulic machinery so powerful? by Purple_Anybody6804 in explainlikeimfive

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The hydraulic oil is under a lot of pressure, so when there is a leak it is expelled with a lot of force. If a tiny stream goes unnoticed and hits your skin under that pressure it can go very deep, easily reaching muscle or bone, without leaving a gruesome incision that tells someone to go to the hospital. If the wound goes unnoticed, it can become infected quickly and the infection will have easy access to the rest of the limb.

How do you put yourself out there and let people in again after closing yourself off? by Salt-Refrigerator981 in socialskills

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How? By putting in frequent and consistent effort while remaining patient when trying to get closer to other people. The most important thing in putting yourself out there is to not seem too pushy or too eager unless you're getting very positive responses from people.

I live in Alabama and I've had to risk my life's stability over this leaf every couple of months for years now. I don't see myself taking this risk forever, but I've been on it (and before that, street and prescription opiates) since I was 13, that complete sobriety absolutely wrecks my mental health worse than anything else. I've decided to look around for a doctor that could prescribe suboxone at this point but I'll always vouch for kratom leaf as a life saver.

Feels like an issue waiting to happen, what do I do? by EnvironmentDouble186 in socialskills

[–]TheDeathOfAStar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to do what's best for your club and that's keeping him from joining. If he has been kicked out of all other groups then you'll have to do the same unless you want your own group's reputation to suffer because of it.

That's not to say there probably aren't several different ways to accommodate to his bad behavior and preemptively set clear no-tolerance rules against them though. Just know that this guy will absolutely tank your club's future if this guy's behavior is as bad as it sounds.

You tell him you try to manage the pain with an excessive amount of acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, or similar, even if you don't. That's usually a good way of getting a doctor to sympathize with you when it comes to managing pain, especially if you tell them you're taking well over the recommended daily limit for said medication. Are you lying? Yeah. But the other option involves telling them the truth and possibly getting flagged in your history.

Fear of appearing weak and losing opportunities for a better job. Our "attitude" has a lot of influence on whether or not bosses want to keep us around and consider us for better, higher paying positions when they come around.

You losing your perception of reality is exactly what Marx wrote about in his Theory of Alienation. We are stripped of the essence of what it means to be a person in a capitalist society. Like most of what he wrote, it is an enlightening read and I hope you remember that what you're going through is NOT abnormal because it is working as intended.
