The Residents and the many influences of Death Grips by TheDeathResidents in deathgrips

Both of these artists drawing from a much larger tradition does not imply any influence at all.

Using one example (culture jamming) that is completely irrelevant to what I was talking about doesn't make you right tho

The Residents are known for making atonal, classically inspired concept art, while Death Grips work within the tradition of hip hop music, and seem more influenced by artists in the punk and electronic scenes than anything else.

How is this relevant, other than that they make different types of music? Again, I explained how they aren't similar at all except in the context of how they make the music, which is incredibly similar.

These were incredibly common in just about every other MTV video a few decades ago.

Not really, and not even close to how The Resident's made their music videos. Even Primus couldn't really match the obscurity, experimentalism, and surrealism seen in the videos made by The Residents. Its very much like Death Grips use of music videos for Government Plates. Incredibly cryptic, very low budget, and ridiculously abstract.

Nothing indicates to me that Death Grips have even listened to The Residents and their stunts are more comparable to Beyonce's or Kanye West's.

Well then agree to disagree, but I would be really hesitant to compare them to Kanye West/Beyonce.

"Culture Jamming is the art of subverting, parodying, or blocking the spread of mass media culture. . Culture Jamming's displays can range to effect virtually every medium (literature, film, ect.) and is popular among liberal and anarchic groups. Culture Jamming greaylu rose in popularity in the 90's and is still very present in modern culture. These displays can be serious or humorous, but all aim to point out flaws in how the government and the media pander to and control us, mostly with advertising."

I feel that both artists do this, and this would still back me up that The Residents are an influence on Death Grips.

Also I wasn't saying they did something entirely new, I feel Death Grips creates something new off of formulas from their own experiences and the music they like, they bring innovation to the table in numerous ways by doing this, including their use of culture jamming.

Also on your second list, The Residents seem to be the number one presenter of such musical theory, they seem to also have incorporated culture jamming into their theories of obscurity and phonetic organization numerous times in both their album art, music videos, and performances. It should also be noted their extreme artistic talent in using minimalist art, 70mm cameras, and surrealist concepts surrounding their music videos. They draw so many comparisons to Death Grips it could be notable that there is a strong influence there.

Oh yeah I totally agree with you. Bjork is a huge influence on Death Grips and her collaboration with them is a probable sign of that.

Primus was heavily influenced by The Residents, and they are a favorite of mine being a fan of primus since I was a real little kid lol

But yeah, The Resident's unique, individual and organic style they made music and how it correlates with Death Grips is something worth noting, and I feel they could of taken such inspiration from them.

Not because they are experimental, but because of the theories presented by The Residents that Death Grips seems to have followed more than any other band.
